Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from the history of the old Town Hall and City Hall, this book provides an analysis of Council’s policies and the delivery of services and infrastructure that shaped Brisbane between 1985 and 2013. It provides a permanent record of Council accomplishments during a period of enormous change. Established three months before Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859 one of the first issues that faced the new Brisbane Municipal Council was the need for a Town Hall. This publication brings to life the shortcomings of the old Town Hall and the forty-year battle to erect a more suitable facility, which became City Hall. The odyssey continued in the decade long financial struggle to construct Brisbane’s City Hall following the end of World War I. The Council’s aspirational vision for Brisbane, together with strategies and objectives, that make the city a great place to conduct business, work and live are embraced in the concept Brisbane – Australia’s New World City. Today, not only does Council provide the basic services but also must compete against other major cities, both in Australia and internationally, if Brisbane is to progress and not stagnate. With blue skies, a subtropical climate and outdoor lifestyle, Brisbane is positioned on the world stage as vibrant, innovative, clean and green, a great place to live.

Book excerpt: "Local Government may be about roads, rates and rubbish but nobody said that this level of government can't also play a significant role in adding to the economic success of a city or regional area. Julian has captured the unconventional thinking and actions that went towards the shaping of a new modern and respected Brisbane." - Graham Quirk, former Lord Mayor of Brisbane "Not enough is written about local government in Australia - the grassroots of our democracy - and Julian's contribution is both welcome and valuable. Julian's unique personal insights capture some of the values, key decisions and on-the-ground achievements that have helped to ensure the LNP Council team have been trusted by Brisbane residents to set the direction of Australia's largest council for almost 20 years. Most importantly, with ongoing renewal in our team - both in people and ideas - our collective commitment to building a better Brisbane remains as fresh as it was on day one." - Adrian Schrinner, Lord Mayor of Brisbane From the Introduction This is not a history book. It does not come close to covering every important moment in the life of Brisbane for the period I was involved. Notwithstanding, I trust the events I have chosen represent some of the key moments for the LNP Council team during this period, offer an illustration of the players, their actions and lives leading Australia's largest local government. The book contains only one perspective - my own. The events are described through the prism of my role or proximity to them. It is unashamedly an insider's account of the period and the way I saw it. Some of the events represent important and worthwhile policy achievements. Others are Utopia-esque in their bureaucratic ineptitude, a satire that too often resembles reality. Some are downright failures and mistakes, including several of my own. Whether met with success, ineptitude or failure, my experience of the players is they approached their role with good intentions, a desire to give their best and with the hope that they could make a difference to the city they love. About the Author Julian went to work in Brisbane City Council in 2008 as a policy adviser to then Lord Mayor Campbell Newman before he won the Walter Taylor Ward By-election. Elevated to Cabinet six months later, he served across three different Cabinet portfolios helping shape Brisbane through some of its most challenging events. After a decade in Council, and at the age of 34, he was elected as the Federal Member for Ryan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brisbane: Utopian Dreams and Dystopian Nightmares tells the stories of little-known, and rather peculiar aspects of Brisbane’s colourful history. Eleven Brisbane authors from the 19th and 20th centuries wrote about how wonderful, ‘utopian’, Brisbane could be — or how dreadful, ‘dystopian’, it could also be. Some writers imagined a future utopian Brisbane where inequality has been eliminated, where everyone is prosperous, living in the most beautiful city with wide, tree-lined boulevards, wonderful opera-houses and museums, bubbling fountains and grand squares. They saw Brisbane becoming the centre of the civilised world, a model for humanity. Other writers depicted Brisbane as having been annihilated, violently wiped off the face of the earth except for a few stone ruins overgrown with lantana. These dystopian images saw Brisbane residents enslaved in a racial nightmare, beset with poverty and violence, their lives being precarious at best. What led to these utopian and dystopian visions? Who were the visionaries? What do they tell us about a little-known part of Brisbane’s quirky history? These are images of a wonderful or dreadful Brisbane that never eventuated — but could have. This well-illustrated book reveals all in a witty, but sometimes disturbing way.
