Download or read book War & Peat written by Ian D. Rotherham and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The themes of this book were addressed at a major international conference in 2013, and the expanded papers are presented here as chapters with an introduction by Ian D. Rotherham. The papers are grouped around several themes: Military Landscapes; Battles and Battlefields; The Impacts of Conflict and War; War & Peat in the Peak District; and Non-military Campaigns. As we approach the centenary of the Great War (WW1), matters of landscape, terrain, resources and strategies become increasingly topical and relevant. The relationships of people and landscapes, of economies and conflicts, and ecology and history, are complex and multi-faceted. For peatlands, including bogs, fens, moors, and heaths, the interactions of people and nature in relation to history and conflicts, are both significant and surprising."--

Book excerpt: What would you do if you suddenly had all the time in the world? For Shally Hunt and her husband Richard, one week at home was enough before they set off on a 2,300-mile walk from Scotland to Nice, carrying their simple needs on their backs. The couple camped wild in some of the loneliest places in Scotland, encountering searing heat in Lorraine and the Vosges and wild thunder storms in the High Alps. Along the way they met some fascinating characters, like the medium with a penchant for local liqueurs and the man who climbed the Tour des Alps Maritimes on one leg. Shally and Richard reached Nice with their sense of humour and marriage still intact - a remarkable achievement, for their journey was no ordinary walk.

Book Synopsis South Yorkshire Mining Villages by : Melvyn Jones
Download or read book South Yorkshire Mining Villages written by Melvyn Jones and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a period of more than 150 years between the late eighteenth century and the 1930s the South Yorkshire rural landscape was transformed by coal mining and the movement of coal. But it was not just the development of collieries, canals and railways that caused this transformation. The population of the coalfield grew at a phenomenal rate and the new mining population, many of them migrants from other parts of the country, had to be housed near to the collieries where they worked. Small residential colonies were built near the new collieries, existing rural villages expanded, new satellite villages were established and completely new mining communities were created, the later ones carefully planned and laid out in the form of geometrically designed estates. This copiously illustrated book explores the history of the physical and social development of these very varied mining communities, drawing on a wide variety of sources. It is the first book to cover this subject and includes topics such as the settlement that was specifically built for blackleg miners, the development in one village of a large Welsh-speaking colony, how Earl Fitzwilliam housed his colliers and their families and the views of well-known writers like Fred Kitchen, Roger Dataller and George Orwell on the colliery villages. The book will be of great interest not only to readers living in South Yorkshire but also to the descendants of South Yorkshire miners now living in other parts of the country and elsewhere.

First published in 1973 to accompany the groundbreaking BBC television series, it is considered one of the first works of 'popular science', illuminating the historical and social context of scientific development for a generation of readers. In his highly accessible style, Dr Bronowski discusses human invention from the flint tool to geometry, agriculture to genetics, and from alchemy to the theory of relativity, showing how they all are expressions of our ability to understand and control nature. In this new paperback edition, The Ascent of Man inspires, influences and informs as profoundly as ever.
