Book Synopsis Brighton Atlantics by : James S. Baldwin
Download or read book Brighton Atlantics written by James S. Baldwin and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brighton Atlantic locomotives were some of the most handsome machines ever constructed at Brighton Works. They were signed by the D. Earl Marsh, Locomotive Superintendent of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway, and produced as two classes, the H1, introduced in 1905-1906, and the H2, introduced in 19111912.The Brighton Atlantic type has had a following among enthusiasts and model engineers for over a century, with many fine examples of models of these machines being constructed in all scales, both as live steam and electric powered.Great interest is still there today, with many models of these fine locomotives on show at model engineering exhibitions and on smaller scale Brighton or Southern layouts. The Bluebell Railway in East Sussex is currently constructing a full-size replica of the last H2 Atlantic (Beachy Head) in a workshop at Sheffield Park, using some parts from the original locomotive and a rescued Great Northern Atlantic boiler. The project to construct a replica machine has aroused a great deal of public interest in this design of locomotive. At this time there are no books available on the market for anyone who would like to construct a model on, or take an interest in, the replica project on the Bluebell Railway.

Book Synopsis A Life on the Lines by : R H N Hardy
Download or read book A Life on the Lines written by R H N Hardy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During much of his early career, from 1944 through to the early 1960s, Richard Hardy took hundreds of pictures of life on the railways and the men he knew and worked with on a daily basis, using his trusty Brownie 620 box camera. These unique behind the scenes images form a fascinating and hugely evocative portrayal of Britain at the height of the era of steam, during the time of the 'Big Four', and after 1947 when the sprawling nationalised network known as British Railways came of age. The second edition contains many new unseen photos which capture the railways in wartime, providing a valuable social record of the nation at war. In addition there is a sequence of rare photographs of French engines, railways and railwaymen, offering a superb contrast to the British rail network (it quickly becomes evident that the British rail system ran on tea, whereas the French system ran on wine). Great characters are the unifying theme of the pictures, and they include famous figures associated with the railways, such as the poet John Betjeman. This wonderfully illustrated book sets Richard's personal photographs and text alongside a carefully collated selection of ephemera, artworks and photographs drawn from the National Railway Museum in York. Collectively these images and artefacts tell the stories of the great brotherhood of railwaymen, brilliantly evoking the speed, heat and dust of the footplate.

Book excerpt: Atlantic City was founded in 1854 and soon became a seaside resort surpassing all others, earning the nickname Queen of Resorts. Chronicling the glory of the city from 1900 to 1930, these vintage postcards depict a time when visitors were eager to stroll on a local invention, the boardwalk; frolic on the beach; ride a rolling chair; and buy saltwater taffy. The annual Easter parade and Miss America Pageant became Atlantic City traditions. Amusement piers offered vaudeville, band concerts, thrill rides, diving horses, fishnet hauls, and more. Visitors stayed in grand hotels, among the largest and finest in the world. Through more than 200 postcard images, the amazing spirit of this historic resort town is revealed.
