Book excerpt: Isla of Tolbain has just been told by her father that she’s betrothed to a highland laird, Finlay of Seannae. Though at first concerned, she recognizes the importance of the union between her clans. Then she meets Finlay and he’s a fine young man who courts her with charm and consideration. She realizes that it’s not a bad thing to have a union that isn’t love based. Until she meets the man who makes her heart beat faster and her pulse race. Ewan McAbee received a letter from his brother, the laird of Duffus that he’s abdicating his position. Now Ewan, a man who’s fond of his mead and the lasses has found himself as a laird and with new priorities. The first of which is to determine who the masked marauders are that have been ransacking the villages of his lands. Who would have thought that those same raiders would have assailed a young woman on the brae. One who appeared on his doorstep, bedraggled, frightened, and soaked to the bone. Now Ewan McAbee, has a mystery to solve. Where are the raiders hiding and how can he stop them? Add to that, Ewan McAbee, sworn bachelor, is smitten with a woman who’s promised to another.

Book excerpt: In this volume, Professor Clark shows that for two hundred years Canadian society was subject to the same kind of disturbing and disruptive forces that revealed themselves in the United States in the Revolutionary period. In Canada, as in the United States, there was a frontier element which, economically, socially, and culturally, did not feel itself part of the established political order, and which periodically reacted against that order. In Canada, however, the spirit of the frontier regularly met defeat, and the author analyses the causes of this defeat in a thorough and illuminating manner, dealing in sequence with each area of conflict. The study is divided into four parts: The First American War of Independence, 1660--1760; The War of the United Colonies, 1765--1785; The Struggle for the West, 1785--1815; The Canadian Rebellions, 1815--1840. The author, an economist and sociologist, diverges sharply from the traditional historical interpretation of events in Canada from 1640 to 1840, which has been to emphasize the differences between the two countries rather than similarities. His realistic and penetrating study may prompt many to re-examine and re-assess the bases of their interpretations.

Book excerpt: There have been few books about Grey's glorious (but ultimately ill-fated) West Indies campaign in the early years of the long and terrible wars of 1793-1815, yet five of the subalterns in Grey's expeditionary force went on to command divisions in Wellington's Peninsula army; another two commanded the Iron Duke's Royal Artillery; and one (Richard Fletcher) - famously - the Royal Engineers. The tactics used by Sir Charles Grey were as far removed as can be imagined from the traditional image of the two-deep British line delivering massed volleys at pointblank range. The invasions of Martinique, St Lucia and Guadeloupe were raids undertaken by Special Forces, who were instructed to operate in open order, in silence and at bayonet-point; all attacks went in with unloaded muskets. Most of the heavy-duty fighting was undertaken by converged flank battalions, grenadiers and light infantrymen - assembled under hand-picked field officers and used as stormtroopers in every major assault; here were French revolutionary war tactics that are largely unexplored and largely undocumented (at least in modern times). Sir Charles Grey was one of the most aggressive British generals of the era - something his gentlemanly appearance and demeanor did not immediately indicate. Ever cheerful and optimistic - and humane and loyal to his friends - his ability to deliver needle-sharp assaults and then harry a defeated enemy (the latter being something at which British generals of the Napoleonic era were distinctly mediocre) makes him one of the more interesting personalities of the early portion of the 'Great War with France'. If he was not ultimately unsuccessful, it was not his fault: he was robbed of the resources he needed at the outset; then given virtually no reinforcements by Horse Guards. The great killer on this campaign was not the French... it was disease: principally, Yellow Fever. Of the 6,200 men who landed with Grey on Martinique in February 1794, some 4,100 were dead by Christmas - such then is By Fire and Bayonet an account of a very dramatic period for the British Army in the West Indies. It took many years to learn the lessons presented by the campaign, but for the young officers who survived, it provided some invaluable lessons that were put to good use 15 or 20 years later in the British Army of a later era.

Guarding the corrupt governor's family isn't James Adams' idea of the perfect mission, especially as it's going to be his last as a CHERUB agent. And then retired colleague Kyle Blueman comes up with an unofficial and highly dangerous plan of his own. James must choose between loyalty to CHERUB, and loyalty to his oldest friend. For official purposes, these children do not exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1861 and 1865, both the Confederate South and Southern Italy underwent dramatic processes of nation-building, with the creation of the Confederate States of America and the Kingdom of Italy, in the midst of civil wars. This is the first book that compares these parallel developments by focusing on the Unionist and pro-Bourbon political forces that opposed the two new nations in inner civil conflicts. Overlapping these conflicts were the social revolutions triggered by the rebellions of American slaves and Southern Italian peasants against the slaveholding and landowning elites. Utilizing a comparative perspective, Enrico Dal Lago sheds light on the reasons why these combined factors of internal opposition proved fatal for the Confederacy in the American Civil War, while the Italian Kingdom survived its own civil war. At the heart of this comparison is a desire to understand how and why nineteenth-century nations rose and either endured or disappeared.

Book excerpt: In this historical book, Buel takes the reader on a journey through the actions of the most notorious outlaws of nineteenth-century America as they fought for the South in lightning strikes against the armies of the North, developing tactics that would come in handy later in their lives. Buel explains in the book how, after the war, the gang seamlessly transitioned from guerrilla warfare to bank robberies, evading capture and killing opponents. They couldn't keep eluding lawmen and vigilantes forever, as Buel vividly describes, the gang's eventual demise.
