What happened to these men were written in the decisions of the Supreme Court, with the Philippine Islands still under American rule. These decisions, compiled in the Philippine Reports, contained "e;names and facts"e; which historians and researchers could use to evaluate and complete the story of the Philippine nation during an era systematically forgotten. In the turmoil of nation-building, the Filipinos' convictions became their badge of honor, their exploits perpetually etched in the pages of the Philippine Reports. This is their story.

The Digest was assembled by a team of sixteen academic lawyers commissioned by Justinian in 533 to cull everything of value from earlier Roman law. Commissioned by the Commonwealth Fund in 1978, Alan Watson assembled a team of thirty specialists to produce this magisterial translation, which was first completed and published in 1985 with Theodor Mommsen's Latin text of 1878 on facing pages.
