This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oil-Mixed Portland Cement Concrete The enormous growth of the American Portland cement industry, with. Its production Of 7 barrels Of cement in 1910 and 7 1 barrels in 1911, is striking evidence Of the widespread use Of this deservedly popular material of construction. Combined with sand and stone or gravel in the correct proportions and mixed with the proper amount of water, the resultant product - concrete - is a structural material of perhaps more universal adaptation than any other material now in use. Its application to foundations for heavy machinery, to dams, walls, bridge piers, tunnels, subways, and build ing blocks is well known. When properly reinforced with steel, its use is even more widely extended to the construction Of bridges, vats, sewers, water conduits, and numerous other classes of construction. The farmer has found concrete to be Of material benefit to him in building various farm structures which were formerly made Of more perishable materials._ Thus, when reinforced with steel wire or rods, fence posts may be made with an interminable life and at very low. Cost. It is also exceedingly well adapted to the construction Of water tanks, cisterns, silos, pavements, floors, buildings, feeding troughs, etc. Simplicity and ease of manufacture and manipulation in construction great strength and durability, and comparatively low cost are some of the considerations which render its application so universal. Book Synopsis History of the Portland Cement Industry in the United States by : Robert Whitman Lesley
Download or read book History of the Portland Cement Industry in the United States written by Robert Whitman Lesley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Portland Cement Industry in the United States: With Appendices Covering Progress of the Industry by Years and an Outline of the Organization and Activities of the Portland Cement Association What you are, speaks so loudly that people oftentimes do not hear what you say. The Cement Industry of the United States has established for itself a position of such permanence and importance in America's indus trial life, that neither arguments nor eulogies are needed to gain public recognition and appreciation for this great business. We may search the whole field of material virtues and yet find nothing that so commands our respect as does permanence. It is not the beauty of the Pyramids that holds the traveler in Egypt charmed, but it is the appeal their rugged endurance makes to his imagination. They appear to be something that connects today with yesterday - the present with the past - and while they may represent no more than a foolish waste of human effort, thev have the power to go on and on, unyielding even to the ceaseless attacks of the wearing elements and the sands of the desert. Cement means concrete; concrete means stone; and stone spells eternity, so far as our finite minds can comprehend. The development of methods to manufacture great quantities of synthetic stone has given our present civilization the durability it so much needed. The creation of a great Cement Industry has removed, in large degree, the serious menace to life of a coming timber famine. The rapid progress of science and engineer ing in our country has been made possible by our cement mills, which have given us the essential material on which to found our prosperity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portland Cement The present period of the German invasion of our cement market 15 an ominous one for British cement manufacturers. A Portland cement is being put upon our market which in quality equals, if not excels, in some instances, the average product shipped from many of our best known works. The price of the foreign cement is one the English manufacturer IS reluctant, if able, to sell at; and large contracts in this country are being secured by our foreign rivals. The history of the manufacture of Portland cement may be put into a very short space as regards the present inferior position of the average English works. Portland cement was first invented in this country about 1756; Some years later our Continental neighbours started cement manufacture on sound scientific principles. Since this time our foreign rivals have been forging ahead. They have been successful in solving problems of vital importance in the more modern manufacture of a first-class quality product, and at prices which enable them to ship cement, not only to this country but to the very centres of the export and colonial trade which English manufacturers once thoroughly relied upon as their own market. Concrete pipe for sanitary sewers have been used extensively in the cities along the Pacific coast; this in Spite of the fact that the clay interests have attempted, by all possible means, to discredit the use of concrete pipe: We are informed 'that the clay pipe interests have gone so far as to buy the rights to use one of the concrete pipe machines in the state of \vashington, and in some cities have bought the sewer pipe plants and closed them down. The writer recently examined a portion of a con crete pipe sanitary sewer here in Chicago which is said to have been in use 47 years. These pipe were made with natural cement and were in first class con dition. The remainder of this sewer is over a half mile in length, and is laid with the same kind of pipe; and an examination made last year Shows that it is in first class condition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Concrete and Works in Concrete Especially Written to Assist Those Engaged Upon Public Works In the following notes no particular reference is made to the manufacture, composition, or scientific testing of Portland cement, its use on the work being principally considered. Briefly, the valuableness of Portland cement is its power of firmly uniting other substances, its cohesive ness, durability, and adaptability to be moulded into any form with a rapidity of execution unattainable with brickwork or masonry. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Art, of the Manufacture of Portland Cement: With Observations on Some of Its Constructive Applications I have discussed the question of Cement-burning in its purely scientific direction, and compared some of the more familiar methods, with an examination of the various kilns, and their leading features and character. Cement-testing, and the machines used for that purpose, have been referred to at considerable length, but not, in my opinion, more fully than the importance of the subject requires. If the observations on, and review, of the Cement experiments should seem to some of my readers hypercritical, I would plead that being in a great measure responsible for the original adoption of the Board of Works' test, I am anxious, if possible, to arrest its reaching a point where reason or common sense cannot follow. If this tendency of aiming at the ideal and impracticable continues unchecked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elasticity of Portland Cement Experiments were made with neat cement and cement mortars composed of three kinds of sand in the proportions of 1 part of sand to 1 of cement; 2 parts of sand to 1 of cement; and 3 parts of sand to 1 of cement. The different kinds of sand used were (a) A good ordinary coarse red sand such as usually used for building purposes. (this was well washed before using.) (b) A poor argillaceous fine sand unwashed; not good enough for ordi nary building purposes; and (0) Fine Laxey gravel; avery coarse sand such as is used for making concrete lintels, etc. The experiments were divided into two distinct sets, throughout each of which one kind of cement was used. The first set was made with cement supplied by Messrs. J. B. White Brothers. The second set was made to supplement the first, special attention being paid to the points where that was incomplete; the cement used for this set was supplied by Messrs. Currie Cc., Liverpool. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Manufacture of Portland Cement In the somewhat censorious remarks, which Mr. Lipowitz considers it necessary to make regarding English Cement and its manufacturers, I will simply observe that a fair share of his reproof, in my opinion, should be borne by his countrymen; when excessive rivalry exists amongst merchants in supplying an imported article, like Cement, the tricks and evasions practised can only be successfully encountered by the vigilance of the consumer. Were rigid tests universally applied, adulterated or inferior Cement would cease to be made. N o manufacturer would be found to risk the production of an article that could not find a market.
