Through her work, and in dozens of lengthy interviews with this intensely private man, she managed to break through his legendary mask of reserve, accessing facts that were previously unknown even to family members and close friends. This biography of Sacher has been described by The London Times as 'enthralling', and by Germany's prestigious magazine DER SPIEGEL as '...one of the most fascinating biographies of recent years.'

Book Synopsis Art of the 20th Century by : Karl Ruhrberg
Download or read book Art of the 20th Century written by Karl Ruhrberg and published by Taschen. This book was released on 2000 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original edition of this ambitious reference was published in hardcover in 1998, in two oversize volumes (10x13"). This edition combines the two volumes into one; it's paperbound ("flexi-cover"--the paper has a plastic coating), smaller (8x10", and affordable for art book buyers with shallower pockets--none of whom should pass it by. The scope is encyclopedic: half the work (originally the first volume) is devoted to painting; the other half to sculpture, new media, and photography. Chapters are arranged thematically, and each page displays several examples (in color) of work under discussion. The final section, a lexicon of artists, includes a small bandw photo of each artist, as well as biographical information and details of work, writings, and exhibitions. Ruhrberg and the three other authors are veteran art historians, curators, and writers, as is editor Walther. c. Book News Inc.

Book Synopsis The Project of Autonomy by : Pier Vittorio Aureli
Download or read book The Project of Autonomy written by Pier Vittorio Aureli and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2008-07-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Project of Autonomy radically rediscusses the concept of autonomy in politics and architecture by tracing a concise and polemical argument about its history in Italy in the 1960's and early 1970's. Architect and educator Pier Vittorio Aureli analyzes the position of the Operaism movement, formed by a group of intellectuals that produced a powerful and rigorous critique of capitalism and its intersections with two of the most radical architectural-urban theories of the day: Aldo Rossi's redefinition of the architecture of the city and Archizoom's No-stop City. Readers are introduced to major figures like Mario Tronti and Raniero Panzieri who have previously been little known in the English-speaking world, especially in an architectural context, and to the political motivations behind the theories of Rossi and Archizoom. The book draws on significant new source material, including recent interviews by the author and untranslated documents."--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE.

Download or read book Rodin / Arp written by Raphaël Bouvier and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affinities and contrasts in the work of two icons of modern sculpture In terms of modern sculpture, there are few artists who can claim the same level of influence as Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and Hans "Jean" Arp (1886-1966). Rodin's naturalistic rather than decorative approach to sculpture revolutionized the field in the late 19th century, while Arp prompted another wave of experimentation in the early 1900s with his abstract sculpture. In this volume, the oeuvres of both pioneers are placed in conversation with one another to demonstrate their artistic affinities as well as their creative contrasts. As Rodin moved away from the preeminent trends of mythological allegory in order to focus on the organic elegance of the human figure, he eventually approached an Impressionistic style. Arp, as an early member of the Dadaist movement, reinterpreted many of the trends brought forth by Rodin, emphasizing abstraction as a means for conveying pathos. This publication allows readers to appreciate the evolution of both artists individually and in the context of art history as a whole: as sculptural milestones, the creations of Rodin and Arp provide a vivid illustration of fundamental developments in modern sculpture stylistically and ideologically. Curator Raphaël Bouvier provides textual insight along with several other acclaimed art scholars, including Catherine Chevillot, Director of the Musée Rodin.

Book excerpt: "Event Scores, involve simple actions, ideas, and objects from everyday life recontexualized as performance. Event Scores are texts that can be seen as proposal pieces or instructions for actions. The idea of the score suggests musicality. Like a musical score, Event Scores can be realized by artists other than the original creator and are open to variation and interpretation."--Artist's website
