This book was released on 2001 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the will to change children and how a new phenomenon arose in 19th century Europe - the re-education home. It describes the founders of these homes, of which thousands were established, the children who lived there, their parents (who were considered bad or incompetent educators), and the re-education that took place in these homes. It describes also the role of religion, private philanthropy and the government, child welfare legislation, and child science. «By ceaselessly observing their behaviour and character, by correcting the bad habits, weaknesses and impulses they exhibit, and by developing and reinforcing the positive properties and characteristics they possess», so founders of one of these homes described their will to change the child. From the perspective of enlightened philanthropy, which was based on optimistic views on the child and mankind, change meant betterment. To Evangelical philanthropists, who held pessimistic views on the child and mankind based on the dogma of original sin, change meant atonement and salvation. In child pathology - the science developed at the end of the nineteenth century which studied problem children - change meant diagnostics and therapy.

Book Synopsis The Rise of Caring Power by : Annemieke van Drenth
Download or read book The Rise of Caring Power written by Annemieke van Drenth and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original study discusses the role of women in developing and dispersing caring power and, vice-versa, the role of caring power in constituting 'women' as modern social subjects, processes which began around 1800. Based on the historian-/philosopher Foucault's concept of pastoral power, "caring power" also takes into account the vital role played by gender. Both humanitarian and religious motives fostered the ideal of serving the well-being of individual 'others' and thereby the interest of society as a whole. With the rise of caring power, this book argues, women began to feel responsible for 'those of their own sex' and to organize themselves in all-female organizations. In the process they carved out new gender identities for themselves and the women in their care. The authors illustrate this profound historical change with the work of the reformers Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) and Josephine Butler (1828-1906) and trace their impact in Britain and the Netherlands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume explore continuities and changes in the role of philanthropic organizations in Europe and North America in the period around the French Revolution. They aim to make connections between research on the early modern and late modern periods, and to analyze policies towards poverty in different countries within Europe and across the Atlantic. Book Synopsis Science Cultivating Practice by : H. Maat
Download or read book Science Cultivating Practice written by H. Maat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Cultivating Practice is an institutional history of agricultural science in the Netherlands and its overseas territories. The focus of this study is the variety of views about a proper relationship between science and (agricultural) practice. Such views and plans materialised in the overall organisation of research and education. Moreover, the book provides case studies of genetics and plant breeding in the Netherlands, colonial rice breeding, and agricultural statistics. Ideas affected the organisation as much as the other way round. The net result was an institutional development in which the values of academic science were rated higher than the values of practice. This book is a distinctive piece of work as it treats the dynamics of science in a European as well as in a colonial context. These different ecological and social environments lead to other forms of knowledge and experimentation as well as other ways of organising science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Early Dutch Sinologists Koos Kuiper gives a detailed account of the studies and work of the 24 Dutchmen trained as “interpreters” for the Netherlands Indies before 1900. Most began studying at Leiden University, then went to Amoy to study southern Chinese dialects. Their main functions were translating Dutch law into Chinese, advising the courts on Chinese law and checking Chinese accounts books, later also regulating coolie affairs. Actually their services were not always appreciated and there was not enough work for them; later many pursued other careers in the Indies administration or in scholarship. This study also analyses the three dictionaries they compiled. Based on a wealth of primary sources, it gives a fascinating picture of personal cross-cultural contacts.

Book Synopsis Calvinism and Religious Toleration in the Dutch Golden Age by : R. Po-Chia Hsia
Download or read book Calvinism and Religious Toleration in the Dutch Golden Age written by R. Po-Chia Hsia and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dutch society has enjoyed a reputation, or notoriety, for permissiveness from the sixteenth century to present times. The Dutch Republic in the Golden Age was the only society that tolerated religious dissenters of all persuasions in early modern Europe, despite being committed to a strictly Calvinist public Church. Professors R. Po-chia Hsia and Henk van Nierop have brought together a group of leading historians from the US, the UK and the Netherlands to probe the history and myth of this Dutch tradition of religious tolerance. This 2002 collection of outstanding essays reconsiders and revises contemporary views of Dutch tolerance. Taken as a whole, the volume's innovative scholarship offers unexpected insights into this important topic in religious and cultural history.
