Book Synopsis Exploring the Dutch Empire by : Catia Antunes
Download or read book Exploring the Dutch Empire written by Catia Antunes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1602, the States General of the United Provinces of the Netherlands chartered the first commercial company, the Dutch East India Company, and, in so doing, initiated a new wave of globalization. Even though Dutch engagement in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans dates back to the 16th century, it was the dawn of the 17th century that brought the Dutch into the fold of the general movement of European expansion overseas and concomitant globalization. This volume surveys the Dutch participation in, and contribution to, the process of globalization. At the same time, it reassesses the various ways Dutchmen fashioned themselves following the encounter and in the light of increasing dialogue with other societies across the world. As such, Exploring the Dutch Empire offers a new insight into the macro and micro worlds of the global Dutchman in Asia, Africa and the Americas. The result fills a gap in the historiography on empire and globalization, which has previously been dominated by British and, to a lesser extent, French and Spanish cases.
Book Synopsis The Shaping of South African Society, 1652–1840. by : Richard Elphick
Download or read book The Shaping of South African Society, 1652–1840. written by Richard Elphick and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is a powerful aid to the understanding of the present, and those who are concerned with the escalating crisis in South Africa will find this an invaluable source book. This is the story of the evolution of a society in which race became the dominant characteristic, the primary determinant of status, wealth, and power. Cultural chauvinism of the first European colonists – primarily the Dutch – merged with economic and demographic developments to create a society in which whites relegated all blacks – free blacks, Africans, imported slaves – to a systematic pattern of subordination and oppression that foreshadowed the apartheid of the twentieth century. From the beginning of the nineteenth century the new empire-builders, the British, reinforced the racial order. In the next century and a half the industrialized South Africa would become firmly integrated into the world economy. Published originally in South Africa in 1979 and updated and expanded now, a decade later, this book by twelve South African, British, Canadian, Dutch, and American scholars is the most comprehensive history of the early years of that troubled nation. The authors put South Africa in the comparative context of other colonial systems. Their social, political, and economic history is rich with empirical data and rests on a solid base of archival research. The story they tell is a complex drama of a racial structure that has resisted hostile impulses from without and rebellion from within.
Book Synopsis The South Africa Reader by : Clifton Crais
Download or read book The South Africa Reader written by Clifton Crais and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Africa Reader is an extraordinarily rich guide to the history, culture, and politics of South Africa. With more than eighty absorbing selections, the Reader provides many perspectives on the country's diverse peoples, its first two decades as a democracy, and the forces that have shaped its history and continue to pose challenges to its future, particularly violence, inequality, and racial discrimination. Among the selections are folktales passed down through the centuries, statements by seventeenth-century Dutch colonists, the songs of mine workers, a widow's testimony before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and a photo essay featuring the acclaimed work of Santu Mofokeng. Cartoons, songs, and fiction are juxtaposed with iconic documents, such as "The Freedom Charter" adopted in 1955 by the African National Congress and its allies and Nelson Mandela's "Statement from the Dock" in 1964. Cacophonous voices—those of slaves and indentured workers, African chiefs and kings, presidents and revolutionaries—invite readers into ongoing debates about South Africa's past and present and what exactly it means to be South African.

Download or read book A Century of Wrong written by Francis William Reitz and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Century of Wrong" is a historical novel. At the advent of the South African War (Second Anglo-Boer War), Francis William Reitz, in his capacity of State Secretary of the South African Republic, published an overview of Anglo-Boer relations in the nineteenth century in Dutch, under the title "A Century of Wrong". The book was an important propaganda document in the war. Reitz defends the Dutch from what he terms as wrong accusations of Dutch Boer brutality against the natives of the Transvaal Region. He in turn counters with a history of British aggression against the Dutch migrants in the South African Republic.

Book Synopsis The Social World of Batavia by : Jean Gelman Taylor
Download or read book The Social World of Batavia written by Jean Gelman Taylor and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2009-04-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the seventeenth century, the Dutch established a trading base at the Indonesian site of Jacarta. What began as a minor colonial outpost under the name Batavia would become, over the next three centuries, the flourishing economic and political nucleus of the Dutch Asian Empire. In this pioneering study, Jean Gelman Taylor offers a comprehensive analysis of Batavia’s extraordinary social world—its marriage patterns, religious and social organizations, economic interests, and sexual roles. With an emphasis on the urban ruling elite, she argues that Europeans and Asians alike were profoundly altered by their merging, resulting in a distinctive hybrid, Indo-Dutch culture. Original in its focus on gender and use of varied sources—travelers’ accounts, newspapers, legal codes, genealogical data, photograph albums, paintings, and ceramics—The Social World of Batavia, first published in 1983, forged new paths in the study of colonial society. In this second edition, Gelman offers a new preface as well as an additional chapter tracing the development of these themes by a new generation of scholars.
