Book excerpt: In this second volume in the Ackroyd’s Brief Lives series, bestselling author Peter Ackroyd brings us a man of humble beginnings, crude manners, and prodigious talents, the nineteenth-century painter J. M. W. Turner. Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in 1775. His father was a barber, and his mother came from a family of London butchers. “His speech was recognizably that of a Cockney, and his language was the language of the streets.” As his finest paintings show, his language was also the language of light. Turner’s landscapes—extraordinary studies in light, colour, and texture—caused an uproar during his lifetime and earned him a place as one of the greatest artists in history. Displaying his artistic abilities as a young child, Turner entered the Royal Academy of Arts when he was just fourteen years old. A year later his paintings appeared in an important public exhibition, and he rapidly achieved prominence, becoming a Royal Academician in 1802 and Professor of Perspective at the Academy from 1807–1837. His private life, however, was less orderly. Never married, he spent much time living in taverns, where he was well known for his truculence and his stinginess with money. Peter Ackroyd deftly follows Turner’s first loves of architecture, engraving, and watercolours, and the country houses, cathedrals, and landscapes of England. While his passion for Italy led him to oil painting, Turner’s love for London remained central to his heart and soul, and it was within sight of his beloved Thames that he died in 1851. His dying words were: “The sun is God.” Also available in ACKROYD’S BRIEF LIVES Chaucer

Book excerpt: The social teaching of the Roman Catholic Church has aroused publicinterest in recent years with the increased involvement of North American bishops in matters of civic morality, with the growth of liberation theology in Central and South America, and with the ongoing political and economic statements of Pope John Paul II. A vital ingredient of Roman Catholic social teaching is the papal encyclical literature. Debate grows, however, over exactly what the papal letters teach. Noteworthy encyclical commentaries exist, but none has attempted a comprehensive historical analysis of the complete content and overall coherence of Roman Catholic encyclical social teaching. This book, appearing in advance of the 1991 centennial of "Rerum novarum", provides the kind of analysis that concerned Roman Catholics, public officials, social ethicists, theologians and students are looking for: a textually inclusive and topically broad-gauged study of Catholic social teaching in its historical development with a forthright assessment of the teaching's contradictions and consistencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James A. Michener was one of the most beloved storytellers of our time, captivating readers with sweeping historical plots that educated and entertained. In this first full-length biography of the private as well as the public Michener, Stephen J. May reveals how an aspiring writer became a best-selling novelist. It is the only book to draw on Michener’s complete papers as well as interviews with his friends and associates. The result conveys much about Michener never before revealed in print. May follows the young Michener from an impoverished Pennsylvania childhood to the wartime Pacific, where he found inspiration for Tales of the South Pacific, a book that led to a string of best sellers, including The Source, Centennial, Chesapeake, and The Covenant. May provides insights into Michener’s personal life: his three marriages, his unique working methods, and his social and political views. He also reveals the author’s hypersensitivity to criticism, his egotism, and his failure on some occasions to acknowledge the contributions of his assistants. Examining Michener’s body of writing in its biographical and cultural contexts, May describes the creation of each novel and assesses the book’s strengths and shortcomings. His close readings underscore Michener’s innovativeness in presenting mountains of historical and cultural research in an engaging literary form. This probing biography establishes Michener’s place in twentieth-century letters as it offers an unprecedented view of the man behind the typewriter.

Prenshaw This collection of essays about the writings of Eudora Welty, a southern writer in the grand tradition of American literature, reflects the range of Welty criticism. Themes, forms, and stylistic features in her work are given careful consideration by some of the most notable of Welty scholars: Chester E. Eisinger, John A. Allen, J. A. Bryant, Jr., John Edward Hardy, Albert J. Devlin, Warren French, Julia L. Demmin and Daniel Curley, Daniele Pitavy-Souques, Robert B. Heilman, Seymour L. Gross, Barbara McKenzie, Michael Kreyling, and Ruth M. Vande Kieft. The essays included in this volume were selected from the 1979 publication Eudora Welty: Critical Essays also edited by Peggy W. Prenshaw. Eudora Welty: Thirteen Essays retains the breadth of subject and approach that marked the earlier volume. Dr. Peggy W. Prenshaw is currently the Millsaps College Humanities Scholar in Residence. She recently retired from the Fred C. Frey Chair in Southern Studies at Louisiana State University. She has published widely on southern women writers, including Eudora Welty and Elizabeth Spencer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American legal history is traditionally viewed as a succession of discrete schools of thought or landmark court decisions, not as the work of individuals. Such an approach, however, hardly does justice to the lives of two of the foremost teachers and theorists of American jurisprudence. In Roscoe Pound and Karl Llwellyn: Searcbing for an American Jurisprudence, N. E. H. Hull reconstructs the historical, cultural, and intellectual context of the work of Pound and Llewellyn, bringing to light their private and public relationship as well as the diverse sources - from psychology to plant ecology to Icelandic sagas - they separately drew upon in making their contributions to the American legal tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carmel-by-the-Sea, The Early Years (1903-1913) describes the establishment of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, along with an overview of the history of the Carmel Mission and the Monterey Peninsula. The books emphasis is on the development of Carmel as a Bohemian artists and writers colony at the start of the 20th century. The towns first decade of existence is described: the businesses and services offered, and the residential architecture. There are biographies of the well-known Bohemian artists, writers, poets, builders, and other notable residents and visitors in the early 1900s. This original group of settlers, the majority of whom came from Northern Californias Bay Area, were distinctive individuals, who were drawn to the coastal village by its scenic beauty and the inspiration it provided for their intellectual pursuits. They set the tone that made Carmel-by-the-Sea a Bohemian enclave on the West Coast, and distinguished it as a unique place. These early residents and visitors left a significant and lasting impact on the future of the seaside town, which in turn attracted other creative talents to the area, through the years and still to this day. Carmel-by-the-Sea, The Early Years (1903-1913), preserves the literary, artistic, cultural, and architectural heritage of Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula region.
