We used a nationally representative sample of 12,189 retirees from the first 4 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that compared with full retirement, engaging in bridge employment either in a career field or in a different field was associated with fewer major diseases and functional limitations, whereas engaging in career bridge employment was associated with better mental health. The findings highlight the health benefits of engaging in bridge employment for retirees. The practical implications of this study are discussed at both the individual and policy levels. Limitations of the current findings are also noted in conjunction with future research directions.

Book excerpt: "Bridge employment (BE), generally defined as working for pay after having "fully" retired or first reducing the number of hours worked, then retiring, is perceived as a solution to the challenges faced by aging societies (OECD, 2006; Smaliukiene & Tvaronaviciene, 2014). The OECD and governments of developed countries recognize that working in old age can help older workers remain financially independent and socially engaged (Kim & Feldman, 2000; OECD, 2006). However, despite the purported benefit of working in BE and the increase in participation in BE, empirical studies show that working in BE is not always positively or significantly associated with better mental health. Until this point, the literature on BE and mental health has been mostly focused on the mental health consequences, without further qualifying BE in terms of employment characteristics. Thus, this thesis draws from the sociology of work and labour economic theories and the health and employment literature to disentangle the nuanced conditions under which BE is associated with mental health outcomes.The first empirical chapter is a systematic review of all the studies that have examined the mental health consequences of BE participation by using repeatable and transparent review process that emphasizes the assessment of study quality. The systematic review results demonstrate that the conceptualization of BE is an important factor in influencing mental health outcomes. When BE is conceptualized based on participation, the association between BE and mental health is not significant. However, when BE participation occurs on a voluntary basis (Calvo et al., 2009; Dingemans & Henkens, 2014) and is with the same employer, or within the same occupation (Wang, 2007), BE is associated with better mental health outcomes compared to full retirement (Zhan et al., 2009). The results suggest that there may be a selection effect at play and more nuanced definitions of BE should be employed. Heeding this suggestion, the second and third empirical chapters study the variation in work conditions among those working in BE as well as the various selection processes at play in terms of who engages in what type of BE. These chapters use data from the Health and Retirement Survey from the United States, a nationally longitudinal dataset of older people conducted between 1994 and 2014 inclusively. The analytic sample includes 7967 respondents who stayed in the survey for six to ten years after initial retirement. The second empirical chapter examines how working in BE, in stressful and non-stressful BE, in physically demanding and non-physically demanding BE, and in precarious and less precarious BE are associated with mental health outcomes compared to full retirement. The fixed-effects model automatically controlled for all time-constant factors within the individual. The results show that working in BE in general, in non-stressful BE, in non-physically demanding BE and in less precarious BE are associated with improvements in mental health. Also, the results show that compared to being fully retired, working in stressful BE, physically demanding BE and more precarious BE transitions are not necessarily associated with worse mental health. The third empirical chapter focuses on selection effects to examine how pre-retirement factors are associated with people's participation in BE. The results show that having higher education, better health, and higher income increases people's likelihood of working in BE. This suggests that working in BE (relative to retirement) may be associated with better mental health because of favorable preexisting characteristics. Furthermore, there is strong evidence for path dependency or a life course effect in terms of the quality of BE employment. Financial debt and macroeconomic conditions also complicates the motivation and limitations of BE participation"--

It serves as a transition process from career employment to full retirement. Typical bridge employment decisions include full retirement, career bridge employment, and bridge employment in a different field. In the current study, 3 dominant theories (i.e., role theory, continuity theory, and life course perspective) on retirement processes were reviewed. On the basis of these theories, the authors proposed 4 categories of antecedents (i.e., individual attributes, job-related psychological variables, family-related variables, and a retirement-planning-related variable) of different types of bridge employment decisions. The authors used longitudinal data of a large, nationally representative sample from the Health and Retirement Study (F. Juster & R. Suzman, 1995) to test the current hypotheses. These data were analyzed with multinomial logistic regression, and most of the hypotheses were supported by the results. The implications of this study are discussed at both theoretical and practical levels.

Book excerpt: Bridge employment is increasingly common in the Netherlands. One third of retired employees re-enter the labour market after retirement. Bridge employment may be a forceful instrument in postponing the age at which workers finally leave the labour market. The key to capitalizing on this resource is to understand older worker's work-retirement decisions. The purpose of the current paper has been to examine the prevalence of paid work after retirement in the Netherlands, and to determine what factors contribute to the propensity to engage in paid work after (early) retirement among older adults in the Netherlands. Panel data on Dutch older adults (2001-2011; N=1,304) were investigated using multivariate logistic regression models. The results demonstrate that approximately 30 percent of the Dutch retirees participate in paid work after retirement. Males, persons with higher education, in good health, with a low replacement rate, and with higher work role centrality are more likely to re-enter the labor force after retirement. In addition, the behavior and attitudes of the partner seem to matter in post-retirement work decisions. Older workers were more inclined to re-enter the labor force whenever their partner was still active in the labor force as well, and in cases where the partner did not support (early) retirement. Motives for bridge employment are mainly intrinsic: retirees like to work. Only a small minority took up bridge employment mainly for financial reasons. Forty percent of bridge employees changed sector, and a majority earn an hourly wage below that received in their career job. Bridge employment is therefore de facto a demotion, a career step that is still considered a taboo but which apparently is not felt to be a problem in practice as long as it is voluntary.

Book excerpt: Purpose: This paper investigates how older Americans leave their career jobs and estimates the extent of bridge job activity between full-time work on a career job and complete labor force withdrawal. Methods: Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we explore the work histories and retirement patterns of a cohort of retirees aged 51 to 61 in 1992 over a ten-year time period in both a cross-sectional and longitudinal context. Bridge job determinants are examined in a multinomial logistic regression model of the bridge job decision. Results: We find that a majority of older Americans with career jobs retire gradually, in stages, rather than all at once. We also find that bridge job behavior is most common among younger respondents, respondents without defined-benefit pension plans, and respondents at the lower-end and at the upper-end of the wage distribution. Implications: Older Americans are now working longer than pre-1980s trends would have predicted. Given concerns about the traditional sources of retirement income (Social Security, defined-benefit pensions, and prior savings), older Americans may have to rely more on earnings. This paper suggests that many are already doing so, by moving to bridge jobs after leaving their career employment.
