"I'm worried about Brewster," Magnolia said, mixing carrot cake batter with raisins. "Something has changed. It seems so strange but he's crowing at the oddest occasions." Whether it's the children playing catch in the yard, Zeb painting the barn red, or Grandma Pearl flipping hotcakes, Brewster can't stop from letting out an earsplitting cock-a-doodle-doo that sends the Macintosh family head over heels. When the barnyard brouhaha gets too much, even Doc Sawyer is consulted. But can he figure out how to help Brewster? Readers young and old will be charmed by the perfect solution to Brewster's problem.Devin Scillian is an Emmy-award-winning broadcast journalist with the NBC affiliate station in Detroit. Brewster the Rooster is his ninth book with Sleeping Bear Press. He also wrote the bestselling A is for America: An American Alphabet. Devin lives with his family in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. Book excerpt: In the Depression ravished 30's did a poor farm boy or girl have a greater love than their pony or dog? The author recounts his experiences and those of his neighbors in and around Manning, Iowa, the author's hometown. In carefully crafted fiction, boys attempt to win a race with plow horses. In a true story, hear the words of his father instilling a horse-trading reality in him and how his father managed to keep his cool when a team proves smarter than his son, an honor student. In larger-than-life stories, a plodding horse halts a runaway boy; a colorful team of horses promotes romance and a dog saves a marriage. Share in the exploits of the mischievous apprentice dog that creates confusion and attempts to take credit for the entire evening roundup. Or learn of the lovable dog too scared to hunt; how a dog saves a boy's life, and another saves a girl. Meet the boy who enjoys dining with the President's dog. The author retells the tales of true animal heroes for "children" of all ages, recalling the time in rural America where 'making do' was the only way there was.

Book excerpt: A day without laughter is a day wasted. – Charlie Chaplin A smile lasts, but for a moment, but the memory of it can last forever. My father started me on enjoying clean humor at an early age. I have always loved good humor, particularly puns, shaggy dog stories and short one and two liners. Through the years I recorded the better ones I enjoyed and a few years ago I began sharing them with old friends. Now you can enjoy. As an example: God: “Whew! I just created a 24 hour period of alternating light and darkness on Earth.” Angel: “What are you going to do now?” God: “Call it a day.” It only takes: One smile to make someone feel special. One second to offer kindness to someone who needs it. One laugh to lift the spirits of a friend. One person to make a difference, It takes you. I hope this book helps you pass along a smile weekly if not daily.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first draft of this rational case on behalf of religious faith was written in spring of 2010. Though much revised, the book still comprises three parts offering complementary perspectives. “Why Science Cannot Be the Final Word” logically demonstrates that the empirical approach (what we commonly call science) cannot possibly render conclusive answers to questions about the nature of ultimate reality. It relies heavily upon Immanuel Kant’s “antinomies of pure reason”. “Reasons to Be Suspicious of Faith” presents some of the emotional responses frequently voiced by non-believers. In the absence of conclusive empirical evidence and logical proof, we are left with "feelings”—some of which are quite poignant. Though these emotions deserve respect when they are genuine (as opposed to derisive or exhibitionist), all eventually undercut themselves in hopeless contradiction. Finally, “Reasons to Be Inclined to Have Faith” argues that our sentimental orientation as human beings becomes most coherent and is pointed in the most productive direction if we assume certain spiritual realities. The rudiments of faith cannot be proved any more than they can be disproved. Yet to assume a higher reality, far from being less reasonable, is much more so if we are trying to explain such cryptic inclinations as our admiration for selfless deeds and the crushing guilt we feel after committing a vile act. The book seldom cites biblical passages. Its intent is explicitly not to presume that the reader acknowledges the authority of any scriptural tradition, but rather to place final authority in the soul’s mirror: a bared, self-examining heart and mind.

There, under number 999.99, he finds a very peculiar tome, The Book of True Wishes, which is all about Fergie’s favorite subject: himself. The book knows Fergie’s name, and it promises him everything he ever wanted, which means he is about to forget a very important rule: Be careful what you wish for. When the book puts Fergie under the spell of a mad old wizard, Johnny and his friend Professor Childermass will do whatever it takes to break the book’s hold and save their friend. Johnny Dixon and his eccentric professor friend are two of the most delightful characters in literature as well as “an endearing detective team,” and their adventures continue to hold readers of all ages spellbound (The New York Times).

Book excerpt: A boy tries to stop a rampaging robot in this “deliciously wicked fun” tale by the author of The House with a Clock in Its Walls (School Library Journal) When feared Yankees slugger Cliff Bullard goes barnstorming around the northeast, offering $10,000 to any local pitcher who can strike him out, Professor Childermass and Johnny Dixon get a sneaky idea. There’s a local legend about a crackpot inventor who once built a robot capable of throwing a baseball 110 MPH, and the professor thinks that if they find the machine, they can win Bullard’s prize. They discover the rusted old monstrosity in an abandoned workshop and put it back together, piece by piece. But when they screw in the robot’s eyes and it comes to life, they realize they have made a terrible mistake. As soon as it’s activated, the robot attacks, trying to kill Johnny and the professor. Was it made to be a killing machine, or have its circuits been corroded? To save the town and get a crack at the $10,000, Johnny and the professor will have to tame the steel beast. The adventure stories featuring Johnny Dixon, from the award-winning author of The House with a Clock in Its Walls, are a delightfully imaginative treat, and this book in the popular series features “a unique plot, marvelous characters, and non-stop suspense” (School Library Journal).

Book excerpt: A “spooky[,] spine-tingling” time travel adventure that takes a boy and his eccentric professor friend to the mysterious Byzantine Empire (Publishers Weekly) . . . [Description] Johnny Dixon is worried about Professor Childermass. The professor has always been an odd duck, but lately his behavior has been positively bizarre. He’s been talking to himself and stalking down the street with his collar turned up and his hat over his eyes, and now he won’t return Johnny’s calls. Johnny’s afraid that the professor’s old age is starting to get to him, but he will soon find it’s something far more amazing—and far more dangerous. The professor has discovered a trolley that can carry them five hundred years back in time, to the last days of the Byzantine Empire. In the dark and winding streets of Constantinople, he and Johnny confront crusaders, mystics, and thieves as they attempt to save the ancient empire from destruction at the hands of the advancing Turkish armies. Created by the award-winning author of The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Johnny Dixon is one of the most charming young heroes in literature—a spunky, bespectacled young man whose curiosity often gets him into trouble—and his “wonderfully warming friendship with cantankerous old Professor Childermass makes them an endearing detective team” (The New York Times).
