Durante el siglo XVII, Galileo y Newton dieron un paso de gigante en ese sentido; durante las dos centurias siguientes, sus teorías permitieron un acelerado avance de la física, que culminó con los trabajos de Faraday y Maxwell sobre los fenómenos electromagnéticos. Pero a finales del siglo pasado se comprobó que ciertos fenómenos físicos resultaban inexplicables según las concepciones clásicas. De los intentos realizados para interpretarlos nacieron dos nuevas revolucionarias teorías: la de la relatividad y la de los cuantos. Los científicos que las hicieron posibles, uno destaca claramente: Albert Einstein. y con razón, porque él fue el creador de la primera y uno de los principales artífices de la segunda. La mayoría de la gente está convencida de que las nuevas teorías físicas son indescifrables para los no especialistas. Muchos se mostrarían escépticos si alguien les dijera que, en su esencia, dichas teorías son tan comprensibles como los conceptos newtonianos que aprendieron en la escuela (aunque, desde luego, son muy pocos los que están capacitados para hacerlas comprender).
