Book excerpt: Shy, artistic Margaret Braither inhabits a world of color created by her synesthesia. Experiencing sounds and smells as colors is inspiring for an artist, but it doesn't help her lead the "normal" existence her mother desires for her. Desperate to get away from her parents and become her own person, she seizes her opportunity to study art at the prestigious cole des Beaux Arts in Paris. While there, she struggles to adjust to a new culture, but eventually finds a place for herself, first through friendship, and then through love. Just when she's learned to live fearlessly, everything crashes in on her, and she must choose between mending her relationship and turning to the man who's loved her from afar. Facing her dilemma forces her to face herself, as well as her troubled relationship with her mother, showing her that life, like art, requires perspective and grace. Born and raised in California, Erin Headley fell in love with the French language and culture while in high school. She went on to major in French at Mills College, spending part of her junior year in Paris. She was fortunate enough to live with a French family, as well as study Art History (straight out of the museums), French Drama, and French Civilization. She kept a copious journal while there, which provided much of the background detail for her novel.

Book excerpt: Our knowledge of breathing has shaped our social history and philosophical beliefs since prehistory. Breathing occupied a spiritual status for the ancients, while today it is central to the practice of many forms of meditation, like Yoga. Over time physicians, scientists, and engineers have pieced together the intricate biological mechanisms of breathing to devise ever more sophisticated devices to support and maintain breathing indefinitely, from iron lungs to the modern ventilator. Breathing supplementary oxygen has allowed us to conquer Everest, travel to the Moon, and dive to ever greater ocean depths. We all expect to breathe fresh and clean air, but with an increase in air pollution that expectation is no longer being met. Today, respiratory viruses like COVID-19 are causing disasters both human and economical on a global scale. This is the story of breathing—a tale relevant to everyone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Spirit is in a way the most mysterious of the three "names" of God. For many it is the "unknown God" (Acts 17:23). How can a "Spirit" be love? How can it be a person? What role can a "Spirit" have in the trinitarian relations? In The Breath of God, Veto argues that a more exact comprehension of the third divine person can be reached by considering the way it acts in the economy of salvation and how it reveals itself in its scriptural names: Ruah and Pneuma, breath or wind. Just as, in the eternal life of God, the Father and the Son are precisely what their names designate, likewise, the Holy Spirit is the Breath of God. The procession of the Spirit is the "breathing out" of the Father into the Son, the communication of one intimacy into another, and the "breathing" back of the Son into the Father. This leads to reshaping many aspects of trinitarian theology, in particular divine personhood. It is also fruitful for the believer's life of prayer because it offers a better understanding of the distinct relationship one can have to Father, Son, and Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breathing and its rhythms—liminal, syncopal, and usually inconspicuous—have become a core poetic compositional principle in modern literature. Examining moments when breath's punctuations, cessations, inhalations, or exhalations operate at the limits of meaningful speech, Stefanie Heine explores how literary texts reflect their own mediality, production, and reception in alluding to and incorporating pneumatic rhythms, respiratory sound, and silent pauses. Through close readings of works by a series of pairs—Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg; Robert Musil and Virginia Woolf; Samuel Beckett and Sylvia Plath; and Paul Celan and Herta Müller—Poetics of Breathing suggests that each offers a different conception of literary or poetic breath as a precondition of writing. Presenting a challenge to historical and contemporary discourses that tie breath to the transcendent and the natural, Heine traces a decoupling of breath from its traditional association with life, and asks what literature might lie beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breathing, one of our most essential bodily functions, is central to the proper working of the body and to your quality of life. Taking a wider view, the lungs are the only major system in direct contact with the environment, serving to protect the body with a variety of defenses, but also taking the brunt of the onslaught, when the air we breathe is toxic. The Ins and Outs of Breathing is the result of Dr. Norman Jones's fifty-year odyssey to understand how the lung works and the science of breathing. Jones traces the struggles of scientists from Leonardo to the present day as they pieced together the structure of the lungs. He examines the effect of changes in breathing and its secondary effects on other body systems. Understand how breathing influences many bodily functions, from our muscles, brain, and even the immune system. Discover how Everest was climbed without oxygen, how Roger Bannister ran the first four-minute mile, and how SCUBA allows you to enjoy underwater exploration. Find the evidence to convince you or your friends to stop smoking. See all the different ways in which animals, marine creatures and birds breathe. Gain insights into asthma, COPD, and other lung complaints. Discover what makes your partner snore at night, and what to do about it. Accessible and wide-ranging, this layman's guide to the lungs can help you appreciate the many meanings of inspiration.

He talks about scent marketing and claims that he has created a scent composition to seduce her and spend beautiful nights with her. Will he succeed? Kai Mertens, the junior boss of the advertising agency for which Anja works, thinks about the future on a trip abroad, about whether he should continue to advertise short-lived cheap products that fill garbage dumps and ruthlessly exploit our nature. He invites his friend, the art historian and painter Claus Hoffmann, who no longer finds his life worth living after the death of his childhood sweetheart, on his trip. Can nature fill the emptiness inside him with its beauty and give his life a new meaning?

Book excerpt: This book offers a state-of-the-art description of the complexity of the healthy and pathological respiratory system, with particular reference to the mechanics of the airways, lung and chest wall. Detailed information is provided on new insights into the mechanics of breathing that have been obtained through technological innovations in measurement systems, cutting-edge modeling techniques and novel approaches to functional imaging of the respiratory system. It is explained how these advances permit the assessment of emerging treatment approaches, including new drugs, innovative surgical techniques and modes of mechanical ventilation and new forms of rehabilitation. In order to ensure comprehensive coverage of the subject, the editor has assembled a multidisciplinary team of authors comprising basic scientists in respiratory medicine, chest and intensive care physicians and bioengineers involved in both modeling and instrumentation. The book is intended for intensive care physicians, respirologists, physiologists, rehabilitation specialists, basic scientists in respiration, research and clinical fellows, biomedical engineers involved with respiratory mechanics and respiratory therapists. They will update their knowledge and improve their clinical expertise.
