The first section is a detailed description of the techniques and results of needle localization, and includes practical solutions to commonly-encountered problems. The second section reviews the indications for breast biopsy. The third section covers specimen radiography, including techniques and equipment, orthogonal views, and solutions to common problems. The fourth section covers specimen pathology, including evaluation of gross specimen, preparation of tissue, common problems and their solutions, and size correlations. The next part examines the pathology of benign, borderline, and malignant lesions. The final section presents cases that demonstrate radiographic-pathologic correlations for a variety of breast abnormalities, including spiculated mass or area; nodular (indeterminate) mass; benign-appearing mass; mass with calcification; calcification without mass; and asymmetric density.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving tumor-free margins is an important clinical goal in breast conservation surgery for the treatment of breast cancer. This prospective observational study was designed to answer: can radiography be used to exclude negative margins in breast cancer specimens? Ninety-seven cancers in 95 patients were included in this study. Pathology was used as the gold standard in specimen analysis, each containing 6 (superior, inferior, lateral, medial, anterior, posterior) margins. Of the 5B2 specimens, there were 8 true positive, 463 true negative, 91 false negative, and 20 false positive margins. The following performance parameters were calculated: sensitivity 8%, specificity 96%, accuracy 81%. Overall, specimen radiography cannot be reliably used to diagnose positive margins, nor can it be used to exclude negative margins.

This determination will be based on expert observer studies. The results will then be used as the design specifications for a compact source. We have decided to use breast imaging phantoms instead of breast tissue samples based on the preliminary study performed on the breast tissue samples. Two phantoms are being used. The images for the phantoms have been acquired and registered. Other image processes are in progress and reader study is being scheduled.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to those physicians who believe that greater knowledge of the many subtypes of breast cancer will lead to more individualized diagnosis and therapy, to the ultimate benefit of their patients.--the authorsIn Breast Cancer: The Art and Science of Early Detection with Mammography-Perception, Interpretation, Histopathologic Correlation, Lszl Tabr, one of the worlds most renowned mammographers, has shared his decades of experience in presenting the fundamentals of perception and interpretation of mammographic images. This is the second volume in a series of books written by the team of Tabr, Tot, and Dean describing breast cancer in its earliest phase according to the imaging findings and correlating these findings with sophisticated histopathologic images and patient outcome. This volume covers a particularly troublesome subtype of breast cancer characterized by casting type calcifications.Highlights:- Extensive coverage of the morphology and outcome of this deceptive breast cancer subtype- Nearly 1000 illustrations of stunning quality showing the full range of manifestations- Photomicrographs of large, thin-section pathology slides and unique 3D pathology images which are carefully correlated with mammographic images to explain why mammograms appear as they do- Stereoscopic images that demonstrate normal breast structures and the distortion caused by this unique malignant process- Presentation of an original theory of neoductgenesis to explain the surprising disease outcome all too frequently observed- Scientific rationale for using individualized treatment methods which include the mammographic prognostic featuresFurther volumes in the series will cover- Crushed stone--like and powdery calcifications- Spiculated lesions and architectural distortionLszl Tabr, MD, is Professor of Radiology at Uppsala University and Head of the Department of Mammography at Falun Central Hospital in Falun, Sweden.Tibor Tot, MD, is Associate Professor of Pathology at Uppsala University and Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Clinical Cytology at Falun Central Hospital in Falun, Sweden.Peter B.
