Book excerpt: An Emotional Journey Humor and Hope Through Breast Cancer is a cartoon book drawn with a unique humorous twist on an emotional journey of breast cancer patients. The chapters are broken into the stages a person undergoes: discovery of the cancer, surgery, radiation, chemo, and finally, the happier days after all treatments. Heather did not back away from the silent emotions one goes through; it truly touches on many of the emotions of this journey in a distinctive way to assist that others will know they are not alone and understand there is hope. This book has been reviewed by cancer survivors, mental health professionals, and clergy, and has been found to be supportive for those fighting for their lives. Regardless of where you or a loved one is along this individual journey; these cartoons will be inspiring and humorous. Reading this gem of a book will make you laugh and sometimes cry-it's a cathartic experience for all. -Irene K. Rickus, MS, LMHC Hess leads us through Humor and Hope to the other banks of the ocean of pain and anxiety where one can sprout again with hope and peace from the rubbles of cancer. -Father Sebastian Earthedath, MST, Pastor, Our Lady Queen of Peace. When Heather called me after her breast cancer diagnosis, I was heartbroken. Our sorority of breast cancer fighters and survivors is exclusive, but not coveted. The attitude Heather had was positive, just like her attitude toward life. Her unique insight into life situations has been well-illustrated within her artwork for many years. I know her collection of comical viewpoints of the uncomfortable, quirky positions that cancer fighters and their caregivers face will bring many laughs, lighten the uneasiness of sensitive topics, and encourage hope for the future. -Paula S. O'Neil, PhD, Author of Fighting Cancer like a Girl, Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller

Book excerpt: Margaret Phalor Barnhart, Author Your first question will likely be, "If you had breast cancer in 1987, why would I want to read something that occurred 30 years ago?" The simple answer is that both you and I hear about the breast cancer diagnoses frequently and women are still being treated with mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. In fact, many women are choosing to have both breasts removed. When I was diagnosed at the age of 46, I was quite ignorant about the whole thing. I depended on my internist for information and got a second opinion regarding the mastectomy. When I started chemo I sent my husband to the library (no internet at that time) and he brought home three books. Two were thick tomes about the chemistry involved in chemotherapy. The third was about a woman who died from breast cancer and her husband had her diary published. No help there. I was not raised in a family where we talked about feelings, nor did we have much to say about our bodies. That is why the poetry in "Breast Cancer, an Emotional Journey," covers such intense feelings that I never shared. Most obvious was depression. The anger that comes out in the poetry was never displayed. I think trust in God was evident in both writing and art; but once again, never talked about. Much of the poetry was written in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. The art came during the day when I had trouble focusing my attention on writing. Most of this poetry, art and prose was included in a book called, "Journey Unknown, Focusing on the Emotional Aspects of Cancer, Mastectomy and Chemotherapy." This book is now out of print. I believe you will be interested in the middle section of "Breast Cancer, an Emotional Journey," that includes letters from my family and friends, at my request, that define their feelings and reactions to my breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. You will notice that I use an easy to read font. That is intentional. People going through chemotherapy have limited concentration. Many of the pages stand alone. Of course, I don't expect everyone to have the same experiences and feelings that I did. Whether the book is purchased for you or someone you know, it will have meaning. www.margaretbarnhart.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, at the age of 52, I had breast cancer and a left-side mastectomy. That was my eighth major operation, but my first for the treatment of a life-threatening disease. Almost immediately after the operation, I became aware that there were unexpected benefits to be reaped from this experience, benefits which ended up changing my life and many of my attitudes. Eventually I decided to write a book detailing those many benefits and my thoughts on a variety of topics related to health, health care, self-image, and the value of courage and optimism in the face of adversity. Surviving breast cancer left me a happier, calmer, more focused, and more appreciative person. Now my principal message to other women is that breast cancer does not have to be an entirely negative, terror-inducing experience. On the contrary, it can leave them better off than they were before, both physically and emotionally. I know, because it happened to me. My book is primarily the story of that physical and emotional journey. The five appendices offer a wealth of practical information on risk factors for breast cancer, ways to help prevent it, and much more.

Book excerpt: Sometimes we need to see other people do something that's scary first, and then we can take that first step into the unknown ourselves. Conventional wisdom says one must "fight" breast cancer, but fighting is not for everyone. For some, falling apart proves to be the better response. The Heroics of Falling Apart: One Couple's Breast Cancer Journey is the story of how one couple found their own authentic way to survive the ordeal of coping with a life-threatening illness. In separate voices, Judy and Dan Gordon relate and reflect on their yearlong journey with Judy's cancer, from diagnosis through the end of treatment. The Heroics of Falling Apart examines the broad range of experiences from the surprisingly different viewpoints of patient and caregiver, and does so with a candidness and humor that others facing a similar journey will find touching and inspiring, as well as informative. In the wake of a cancer diagnosis, there is an overwhelming amount of things to do-decisions to be made, questions to ponder, and emotions and people with which to cope. Often, simply knowing that there is no right or wrong way to get through it makes the journey bearable, a fact made strikingly clear through the Gordons' deeply personal and detailed account of their journey.

Defeating Breast Cancer: A Physician's Story of Healing, Martial Arts and Life maps out her journey through diagnosis, treatment, and triumph. In telling her story, Dr. Keen relays not only her mental and emotional journey, but also her experience with complementary medicine (acupuncture) and her traditional course of treatment (surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy). Book excerpt: Breast Cancer: A Journey It Was is an emotional account of the author's battle with breast cancer, the devastating treatment which followed the diagnosis and the slow and often painful recovery. It is, however, more than a tale of woe........it is a journey of love and support and friendship and, of course, very professional medical expertise and care. Breast Cancer: A Journey It Was is so thoughtfully written with a lovely combination of raw emotion and the occasional witty humorous excerpt. I really appreciate your ability so clearly and beautifully to describe your cancer experience and your emotions through these times. I am sure it was a challenge to revisit these emotions and your description is very heart felt. Michael Fitzgerald
