Download or read book Platinum Bible of the Public Toilet written by Zi'en Cui and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-05 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platinum Bible of the Public Toilet is the first English-language collection of short stories by Cui Zi’en, China’s most famous and controversial queer filmmaker, writer, scholar, and LGBTQ rights activist. Drawing on his own experiences growing up in socialist and postsocialist China, Cui presents ten queer coming-of-age stories of young boys and men as they explore their sexuality and desires. From a surreal fairytale depicting a ragtag crew of neighborhood boys in the throes of sexual awakening to a chronicle of the gender-bending and homoerotic entanglements of university students to romantic love triangle erotica to a story that examines teacher-student love and the norms of sex and age, Cui centers queer sexuality as a core part of human experience. Richly imaginative and vividly written, Platinum Bible of the Public Toilet portrays the emergence of queer cultures in postsocialist China while foregrounding the commitments to one’s erotic and passionate attractions even as they lead to cultural transgressions. This volume includes a preface by and an interview with the author.

Book Synopsis Sheading of Rushen (Kirk Malew with Castletown and Ballasalla), Kirk Arbory and Kirk Christ Rushen with the Calf of Man by : George Broderick
Download or read book Sheading of Rushen (Kirk Malew with Castletown and Ballasalla), Kirk Arbory and Kirk Christ Rushen with the Calf of Man written by George Broderick and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-05-07 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 6 comprises the three southerly parishes of Kirk Malew (including the town and former capital Castletown and the large village of Ballasalla), Kirk Arbory, and Kirk Christ Rushen (including the Calf of Man island). The material appears in alphabetical form with discussion of any problems of interpretation, and a listing of the various elements making up the names. This volume yields name-forms and elements not found in Manx literature or dictionaries. In addition, reinterpretation of some of the names now places them in the Early Christian period of Manx history (6th-7th centuries), thus adding them to the small list of names predating the Scandinavian period (9th-13th centuries). As documentary material from that time to the 16th century is largely absent, the testimony of placenames is important for the distribution of name elements reflecting the topography and patterns of settlement, and for the development of Manx Gaelic during that period. It also helps to contribute towards comparative placename study in adjacent areas, particularly Ireland, southwest Scotland and northwest England.
Download or read book The Elder Son written by Henry Lawson and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Lawson's poems narrate the rawness of life in the Australian bush between the late 19th and early 20th century, among humble herdsmen, sheep shearers and itinerant labourers, the compassion for the fates of others, the active solidarity, the austerity of the situations in which women and children live at the mercy of an impervious landscape. Lawson portrays them with great empathy and is able to capture the strenuous struggle to survive in a hostile world and the courage to face the unknown.

Book Synopsis Poetical Works of Henry Lawson by : Henry Lawson
Download or read book Poetical Works of Henry Lawson written by Henry Lawson and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The death of Henry Lawson marked the close of the period in Australian literature which began with Henry Kendall. While living, Lawson had many imitators, but no peers; with his death we turned a page to which there can be no additions. He belonged to a past of struggle, pain, and triumph, when the country was in the making. Others will use those days to give their work background of colour and romance; but there can be none to walk where he walked, none to see with his eyes... With every decade that appeal must increase; for, reading Lawson, our children's children will hear the living voice of those who laid the foundations of all they prize and love." The 'Poetical Works of Henry Lawson is a collection of poems by the famed nineteenth century Australian writer and poet, known for his prolific descriptions of Australian society in the colonial period.
