Book Synopsis The Biblical Dante by : V. Stanley Benfell
Download or read book The Biblical Dante written by V. Stanley Benfell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-11-26 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante Alighieri cited the Bible extensively in his Commedia, but also used his epic poem to meditate on the meaning of the Scriptures as a 'true' text. The Biblical Dante provides close readings of passages from the Commedia to explore how Dante's concept of Biblical truth differs sharply from modern notions. V. Stanley Benfell examines Dante's argument that the truth of the sacred text could only be revealed when engaged with in a transformative manner - and that a lack of such encounters in his time had led to a rise in greed and corruption, notably within the Church. He also illustrates how the poet put forth a vision for the restoration of a just society using Biblical language and imagery, revealing ideas of both earthly and eternal happiness. The Biblical Dante provides an insightful analysis of attitudes towards both the Bible and how it was read in the Medieval period.

Book excerpt: This book features the second selection of the most representative papers presented at the international conference “Dying and Death in 18th–21st Century Europe” (ABDD), a traditional scientific event organized every year in Alba Iulia, Romania. The book invites the reader on a fascinating journey across the last three centuries of Europe, using the concept of death as a guide. The past and present realities of the complex phenomena of death and dying in Romania, the United Kingdom, Lithuania, Serbia, Macedonia, Poland, USA, Germany, Sweden, Finland, and Italy are dealt with by authors from varying backgrounds, including historians, sociologists, psychologists, priests, humanists, anthropologists, and doctors. This is proof that death as a topic cannot be confined to one science; the deciphering of its meanings and of the shifts it effects requires a joint, interdisciplinary effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a colossal epic tale, Mr. Jacob has sketched world history--its folkways, its religion, its superstition, and its plagues, all in terms of bread." --Wall Street Journal From ancient Egypt to modern times, bread has been the essential food, the very symbol of fundamental well-being. First published in 1944 and the result of more two decades' research, Six Thousand Years of Bread is a thought-provoking journey through bread's role in politics, religion, technology, war, civilization, and beyond. A cult favorite among bakers and foodies, this beautiful new seventieth anniversary edition will fascinate philosophers, historians, and bakers alike. The fascinating voyage begins with bread in prehistoric times and continues with an exploration of the plow, the discovery of baking, the Greek passion for seed corn and reverence for the bread goddess Demeter, the significance of the Bible's many references to bread, and how bread contributed to the outcome of World War I. In a poignant conclusion, Jacob describes his own experiences subsisting on bread made of sawdust in a Nazi concentration camp. Six Thousand Years of Bread is a brilliant celebration of bread and the remarkable role it has played throughout human history. Download or read book Revelation Abridged written by Paul Brown and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This abridged commentary takes a highlighter to the whole book of Revelation—like preparing for a school examination. These highlighted words provide practical means for understanding the main points of God’s words in improving daily life. From complexity comes simplicity and elegance of the seven visions of Revelation. Discover that the vision of Moses’ Tabernacle parallels the Lord’s Prayer; the vision of the Holy City parallels the Seven Days of Creation; the vision of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse matches the vision of the Four Hallelujahs; the vision of the Trumpets of Justice matches the vision of the Bowls of Mercy; then climatically the middle Arch Keystone, vision four, marks all of God’s creation as innocent perfection. Supporting interfaith quotes come from the Jewish Tanakh, the Islamic Quran, and the Christian New Testament. So, instead of trying to understand geo-political battlefields and theological labyrinths, just sit back and contemplate a few clarified phrases from each of the seven major visions. See also how the shepherd's Psalm 23 aligns as an uncomplicated summary of these seven visions. From this new nondenominational viewpoint the book of Revelation becomes practical, an archway to bring more peace to daily experience.
