Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we know about the brain's day-to-day functions? What does neuroscience tell us about how we learn? How can we make sense of the complex interconnections of billions of neurons in the human brain? Just as educators divide many subjects into parts, goals, and learning objectives, we can begin to understand the workings of the human brain by focusing on five learning systems: emotional, social, cognitive, physical, and reflective. In Teaching to the Brain's Natural Learning Systems, Barbara K. Given has investigated brain structures and functions of these five systems and applied findings from neurobiology to education without making leaps of judgment or unfounded claims. In this book, she translates neuroscience into an educational framework for lesson planning, teaching, and assessment. Educators can use details from each chapter to add to their repertoire of teaching strategies and instructional approaches. For example, understanding the five learning systems promotes effective, ongoing assessment of youngsters' basic human needs to belong, to know, to do, to reflect, and to be one's self. In addition, each chapter can help teachers' understand the roles they play (mentor/model, collaborator, facilitator, coach, and talent scout) and the personal/professional qualities they bring to the classroom (passion, vision, intention, action, and reflection). This is a practical book for educators based on current neurobiological insights into learning. Note: This product listing is for the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) version of the book.

Book excerpt: In this insightful and deeply personal exploration, Stewart Odendhal DVM PhD offers a unique perspective on the devastating effects of alcohol and drug addiction. Drawing from his professional background and personal encounters with addiction, Odendhal embarks on a mission to educate and deter young individuals from the lures of alcohol. This book is not only a narrative but a crusade against the widespread ignorance about the debilitating effects of alcohol on the brain. Beginning with a startling revelation from a CT scan, Odendhal’s curiosity is piqued by the physical differences in the brains of alcoholics and drug addicts compared to those who abstain. This discovery propels him into an exhaustive research journey, delving into the science behind addiction, the societal implications, and personal anecdotes that paint a vivid picture of the struggles with alcoholism. With chapters detailing his own experiences with alcoholic family members, the scientific intricacies of alcohol’s impact on the brain, and a poignant account of his battle with smoking addiction, Odendhal’s narrative is both educational and deeply human. He reflects on his interactions with Alcoholics Anonymous members, exploring the gap between scientific knowledge and the personal experiences of those battling addiction. I Have a Beautiful Brain, Compared to the Brains of Alcoholics and Drug Addicts is a clarion call for a more informed approach to alcohol education, emphasizing the need for early intervention and awareness. Odendhal’s dedication to this cause shines through each page, making this book an essential read for anyone touched by the effects of alcoholism or seeking to understand the complex interplay between addiction and the human brain.

Book excerpt: Neuroscientists from various disciplines have given extraordinary attention to the role of neurotransmitters in the field of neuronal injury. This volume summarizes the original oral and poster contributions which were presented at the symposium, "The Role of Neurotransmitters in Brain Injury," in Key West, Florida, between June 7-9, 1991. This symposium was the official Satellite of Brain-91, the Fifteenth International Symposium on Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, held in Miami the previous week. The two principal goals of the Key West satellite meeting were to document recent progress and, more importantly, to explore future directions for investigative studies of the role of neurotransmitters in brain injury. To achieve these goals we assembled participants from diverse scientific fields and specialties who brought their collective expertise to discussions on the importance of neurotransmitters in neuronal and vascular injury following brain ischemia, trauma, and epilepsy. Their contributions are reflected in this volume. An important section of this volume is devoted to the role of glutamate and glutamatergic receptors in the development of ischemic neuronal damage. Topics covered include the mechanisms of glutamate and other excitatory amino acids, and the role of underlying injury-induced release different glutamatergic receptors in brain injury, including the NMDA and the non-NMDA receptors. The involvement of other neurotransmitters in the process of ischemic brain injury is well established.
