Book excerpt: Of great utility for every scientist faced with publicizing their discoveries via the media, this book addresses questions of responsibility for the balance and accuracy of scientific reporting, and attempts to be a guide for the scientist in their quest to inform the general public about their research in honest, truthful, and still interesting ways. Case studies by leading scholars in the fields of bioethics (pharmaceutical research (Declan Doogan, Senior VP Pfizer), medical journal editing (Jerome Kassirer, former editor of NEJM), science journalism, philosophy of science, history of medicine (John Warner, chair history of medicine Yale), public health (Ruth Katz, Dean public health, George Washington University), and philosophy of religion (Reverend Wesley Carr, former Dean of Westminster) illustrate positions and points of view and offer unique perspectives on the complex dance between science and the media. Provides a compelling overview and analysis of the difficulties of dealing with mass media and collects tips and solutions. Includes case studies from the experience of a number of high-profile contributors from different fields Provides an easy-to-read, carefully selected and synthesized overview well suited to teaching and as further reading source in respective classes Includes a famous movie from Jose Delgado that shows his attempts in the 60s to demonstrate "remote control" of a bull

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine out of every ten human beings are naturally right-handed. Those who were not right-handed were feared, shunned, or forcibly retrained in many periods and cultures. Indeed, some members of fundamentalist sects still regard left-handers as in league with the devil, and prejudices against left-handers are reflected in the multiple associations of right with good and left with bad that have become enshrined in everyday language and folklore. A “left-handed compliment” is actually an insult, and the dictionary definition of left-handed includes the terms “awkward,” “clumsy,” “ill-omened,” and “Illegitimate.” In his summary of scientific research into sidedness, Stanley Coren rapidly dismisses the notion of the southpaw as somehow tainted. Increasingly we are coming to understand, however, that left-handedness does have social, educational, medical, and psychological implications. Coren uses entertaining examples to illuminate the paths of research he has followed, and answers vitally important questions such as: What are the neuropsychological and behavioral implications of differences for left-handers themselves, as well as for their parents, teachers, spouses, children, counselors, and physicians? How can we determine our own patterns of sidedness? Are they encoded in our genes? And, very importantly, how can we make the world more comfortable and safer for left-handers? Coren persuasively argues that left-handers are an invisible minority who must define themselves and organize for self-protections in the same way that more visible minorities have done. Much (though not all) of the risk to which left-handers are exposed derives from the fact that the tools they use and the machines they operate are designed for right-handers, a flaw that given heightened public awareness would be easy to correct. Coren advocates a change in the way the right-handed majority treats its left-handed minority to eliminate the risks left-handers face.

Roy John is considered the pioneer in the field of neurometrics – the science of measuring the underlying organization of the brain’s electrical activity. Volume 1, co-authored by Robert W. Thatcher, and Volume 2 both originally published in 1977, were among the first books this field. Volume 3, written by colleague Thalía Harmony, followed in 1984. The field expanded significantly in the 1990s and thousands of articles have subsequently been published. Available together for the first time these 3 volumes were important foundational works for the fields of quantitative electrophysiology and neurometrics.

Book excerpt: The fourth volume of Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science consists mainly of papers which were contributed to our Colloquium during the past few years. The volume represents a wide range of interests in contem porary philosophy of science: issues in the philosophy of mind and of language, the neurophysiology of perceptual and linguistic behavior, philosophy of history and of the social sciences, and studies in the fun damental categories and methods of philosophy and the inter-relation ships of the sciences with ethics and metaphysics. Papers on the logic and methods of the natural sciences, including biological, physical and mathematical topics appear in the fifth volume of our series. We have included in the present volume the first English translation of the classic and fundamental work on aphasia by Carl Wernicke, together with a lucid and appreciative guide to his work by Dr. Norman Geschwind. The papers were not written to form a coherent volume, nor have they been edited with such a purpose. They represent current work-in progress, both in the United States and in Europe. Although most of the authors are philosophers, it is worth noting that we have essays of philosophical significance here written by a sociologist, an anthropologist, a political scientist, and by three neurophysiologists. We hope that collaboration among working scientists and working philosophers may develop further.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the fi eld of clinical neuropsychology has greatlyadvanced understanding of the complex relationshipsbetween brain functions and human behavior. This editedcollection, originally published in the early days of thisdynamic fi eld, draws from the fi ndings of clinical study, animal experimentation, and developmental observationto clarify the relationships between brain and behavior. The result is a report on the state of knowledge at thattime, and a barometer of how far the field has come. The book's contributors include some of the leadingfigures in the fi eld of human and developmentalneuropsychology. They present comprehensive reviewsof salient topics on which they themselves have doneimportant investigative work. An introduction by KlausPoeck describes the historical evolution of clinical neuropsychologyand discusses the status of the field fromboth substantive and methodological standpoints. GeorgeEttlinger and Colin Blakemore describe understandingof inter-hemispheric relations as demonstrated by studiesin animals and man. Sidney Weinstein discusses thephenomenon of the "phantom" in patients with amputatedbody parts and its implications for the concept of bodyimage. Norman Geschwind, who was instrumental in revivinginterest in the anatomical approach to aphasia, focuses onsome unsolved anatomical problems and suggests neededclinical and experimental study. Arthur L. Benton outlinesquestions concerning constructional apraxia. JosephineSemmes offers a brilliant reformulation on whether thereare discrete basic types of somatosensory function. LuigiVignolo presents a masterful analysis of the concept ofauditory agnosia and describes his own research in thisarea. Concentrating on a few important problem areas, each of which is intensively probed, this book offers valuableinsight into how research advances understanding ofthe neuroanatomical bases of behavior. Arthur L. Benton (1909-2006) wasprofessor of psychology and researchprofessor of neurology emeritus at theUniversity of Iowa. In addition to thisbook he is the editor of Behavioral Changein Cerebrovascular Disease and co-authorof Dyslexia: An Appraisal of CurrentKnowledge (with David Pearl).
