Book excerpt: The papers presented in this volume provide the latest information on advances in clinical neurophysiology and their applications for better diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This work contains two tutorial chapters on two methodological areas that have become pivotal for electrophysiological investigations of psychopathology. The first tutorial chapter deals with the strategic principles underlying behavioural paradigms within which event related potentials (ERPs) are recorded in psychiatric research. The second tutorial chapter discusses the principles for spatial analysis of EEG and evoked potential (EP) data. Additional topics addressed include the study of schizophrenia and other major depressive disorders, brain mapping, pharmacological effects on the EEG, long term effects of the administration of beta blockers, and an overview of fifty years of EEG research. This comprehensive compilation is derived from the scientific presentations of the VII International Symposium on Clinical Neurophysiological Aspects of Psychiatric Conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Event-related potential methodology has long been used in neuroscience to measure electrical activity in the brain. It has become clear, however, that it can also be a powerful tool in studying and illuminating central psychological issues relating to attention, information processing, mental dynamics, memory, and language. Linking this technology to newer imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging, makes it possible to build up a spatial and temporal picture of the brain during the performance of high-level skills. This volume provides strong evidence that cognitive psychology can benefit from the use of brain electrical activity, and will be of great interest to neuroscientists and psychologists alike.

It is aseries devoted to the presentation of sig nificant research with relevance for both clinicians and researchers in the multiple subfields of psychiatry. This book focuses on the interactions between psychic phenomena and physical processes as studied by evoked brain potentials. It presents material concerned with physiological and psychological unifying processes, as weIl as research concerning technology and methods of obtaining meaningful measurements. As such it is representative of biological psychiatry at its best. Thus, it represents another step in new directions in psychiatric research but not an unanticipated direction. Scientific investigation into the human psyche took an unex pected turn when Sigmund Freud in the last part of the 19th Century turned his attention from neurological concerns to those of psychol ogy. His first attempts at explanations as noted in the "project," included a heavy emphasis on the biological substrate of behavior.

Originally, I wanted only to bring together the results which we have obtained during more than ten years of work on evoked potentials in psychiatric disorders. However, it soon became clear that I really wanted to do a little more than that. First of all, a systematic review of the literature seemed indicated. Even though research findings are usually presented in the context of such a review, our laboratory has not studied every aspect of evoked potentials. Consequently, it seemed more appropriate to place our own results within the framework of a general presentation of the evoked-potential field, rather than to have our specific studies govern topic selection. Second, I found that I wanted to expound on the principles and details of techniques to a broader extent than warranted for presenting only our own results. The motivation for attempting such a "methodological primer" came not only from my long-term preoccupation with technical issues, but from contacts with many investigators who consulted me during the early stages of their ventures into evoked-potential research. Thus, to the initial goal of a re search monograph was added that of a systematic account of both the substantive findings and the methodology of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological Correlates of Human Behaviour, Vol. 3: Individual Differences and Psychopathology offers an introduction to biological research into human behavior. The book discusses the three major dimensions of personality (extraversion, neuroticism and psychoticism) and the major theories of the underlying psychophysiological causes for the observed differences in behavior; and the theory of anxiety. The text also describes the measures of individual differences in habituation of physiological responses; the perspectives on pain; the cortical correlates of intelligence; and sensation seeking as a biosocial dimension of personality. The individual differences in evoked potentials; Pavlov's nervous system typology; theories of psychosomatic disorders; and the role of learning and organismic variables in criminality are also considered. The book further tackles some problems and controversies in the psychophysiological investigation of schizophrenia; the psychophysiological contributions to psychotherapy research; and the use of psychophysiological measures for investigating the influence of social factors on psychiatric relapse. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and behavioural psychologists will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief, accessible treatise harnesses the neurophysiological processes of learning to create an innovative and powerful approach to therapy. It sets out a non-pathologizing alternative not only to the current medicalized conception of diagnosis and treatment but also to the labeling of relatively normal reactions to stressors and upsets as illnesses. Rooted in the neurobiology of human learning, the book’s approach to treatment, Neuro-Cognitive Learning Therapy, characterizes maladaptive behavior patterns as learned responses to upsetting conditions—processes which can be unlearned. In addition, the coverage includes a clinical teaching guide for bringing NCLT theory and methods into the training curriculum. This groundbreaking volume: Proposes a non-stigmatizing learning model for therapy, Neuro-Cognitive Learning Therapy. Introduces the concept of the connectome and explains its critical role in mental health and illness. Differentiates between the unconscious and automaticity in cognition and behavior. Addresses the applicability of NCLT to biologically-based mental disorders. Offers case studies illustrating NCLT in contrast with commonly-used approaches. Includes a chapter-by-chapter clinical teaching guide with therapeutic principles and discussion questions. Provides a comprehensive therapeutic framework for practitioners of all orientations. Depathologizing Psychopathology gives neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, and child and school psychologists new ways of thinking about mental illness and learning about learning for a bold new step in the evolution of mind/brain knowledge.

Book excerpt: In the last two decades imaging of the brain, or neuroimaging, has become an integral part of clinical and research psychiatry. This is due to recent advances in computer technology, which has made it relatively easy to generate brain images representing structure and function of the central nervous system. Currently used clinical diagnostic imaging modalities, such as X-ray computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) , provide predominantly anatomic information. CT images reflect X-ray attenuation distribution within the brain, whereas MRI signals depend primarily on proton sensitivity and tissue relaxivity. The chapter "Structural Imaging Methods" reviews CT and MRI studies on schizophrenic and affective disorders and degenera tive central nervous system diseases. The impact of fast three dimensional (3-0) imaging and the automatic transfer from 3-D elements in the brain to artificial diagrams based on this information is considered. Since the original report of the findings of Ingvar and Franzen in 1974 and the introduction of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) measurements, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) has been gaining acceptance as one of the major imaging techniques, and it is available in most nuclear medicine depart ments. The section "Functional Imaging Methods (Cerebral Blood Flow - CBF, Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography - SPECT)" describes rCBF studies with the 133Xe inhalation method utilizing a 254 detector system and rCBF images measured by SPECT using the tracer 99mTc-HMPAO.
