This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Manipulation of Crop Growth and Development presents a critical review of the plant growth regulators in field crops. It discusses the strategies to discover plant growth regulators for agronomic crops; the methods of modifying stomatal movement; and the possible use of chemicals for photorespiration control. Some of the topics covered in the book are the hormonal control of photosynthesis and assimilate distribution; manipulation of crop growth by ethylene and some implications of the mode of generation; genetic and chemical manipulation of crops to confer tolerance to chemicals; and effects of allelochemicals on crop growth and development. The control of development of potato plant by using endogenous and exogenous growth regulators is covered. The analysis of crop physiology to assess plant growth regulation in sugar beet is also discussed. An in-depth analysis of the influence of auxin antagonists on pod and seed number is provided. The effect of foliar applications of synthetic plant growth regulators on the agronomic characteristics of field-growth corn is presented. A chapter is devoted to the use and effect of cerone in developing winter barley. The book can provide useful information to farmers, botanists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: In a world of increasing atmospheric CO2, there is intensified interest in the ecophysiology of photosynthesis and increasing attention is being given to carbon exchange and storage in natural ecosystems. We need to know how much photosynthesis of terrestrial and aquatic vegetation will change as global CO2 increases. Are there major ecosystems, such as the boreal forests, which may become important sinks of CO2 and slow down the effects of anthropogenic CO2 emissions on climate? Will the composition of the vegetation change as a result of CO2 increase? This volume reviews the progress which has been made in understanding photosynthesis in the past few decades at several levels of integration from the molecular level to canopy, ecosystem and global scales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 12th International Conference on Plant Growth Substances was held from 26th to 31st August 1985 in Heidelberg, F. R. G. , under the auspices of the IPGSA (International Plant Growth Sub stances Association) and the University of Heidelberg in its 599th year. As many as 750 participants from 40 countries all over the world attended the conference, including guests and staff members of the local organizers. Fine days provided an excellent background for a fruitful and pleasant meeting and all the activities accompanying the scientific programme. During the conference all current aspects concerning growth substances were treated. Altogether the par ticipants presented 207 oral reports organized in four parallel sessions and about 300 posters, for which 2 hours' poster sessions were reserved each day. The conference gained in perspective from the arrangement of five workshops in which special aspects and the most recent results could be presented by specialists in the particular fields. The topics of the workshop were: actual methods of hormone detection (orga nizer H. Kende), auxin transport (organizer R. Hertel), growth sub stances and tumour formation (organizer J. Schroder), evolution of the hormone system (organizer W. Jacobs) and problems of ap plication (organizer J. Jung). The abstracts of all presentations were collected in a Book of Abstracts available during the conference, giving a rough surveY of the whole field of plant growth substances in its present state.

Book excerpt: Today it is generally accepted that one of the key areas of biotechnology for the next century will be in plant-based biotechnology. Biotechnology has created new opportunities for plant scientists, with important applications to agriculture and forestry. This reference text is divided into five sections for ease of presentation. The first section focuses on the structure, composition and functionality of plant cells and genes with particular emphasis on the cellular and molecular biology of plants and cultured cells. Section two is concerned with the direct exploitation of cell cultures for the production of useful substances. The third section deals with regeneration and propagation systems. The fourth section considers the increasingly central area of genetic manipulation of plant cell systems. The last section is on specific applications in plant biotechnology. This reference work is a survey of these various facets of plant biotechnology. The individual chapters and the follow-up literature cited allow an easy access to the various subject areas and will, hopefully, stimulate interest in these rapidly moving and exciting fields of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant breeders continue to make significant advances in developing high yield ing, adaptable, disease-free crops. These advances, however, are not realized until an efficient seed production system is in place that rapidly increases geneti cally superior crops and makes them available to the consumer in large quantities at a reasonable cost. Successful seed production requires seed to be genetically pure, free of admixtures, and able to establish rapidly a uniform stand. Seed production is a complex process. Rigorous production criteria are followed by both seed producer and seed companies to ensure that high-quality seed is produced and marketed. These criteria become even more stringent in hybrid seed production. This volume identifies the factors most critical in a successful seed production operation. The fundamental considerations common to all seed crops are established in Part I, Principles of Seed Production. From this founda tion, the practices of seed production are provided in detail in Part II, Seed Production of Specific Crops.
