Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bovine Tuberculosis All species of domestic animals are susceptible to tuberculosis but the disease is more prevalent in cattle, hogs and poultry than in other farm animals. Tuberculosis is readily transmitted from one individual to another of the same species by direct or indirect contact. On the other hand, transmission between species varies because of the existence of three more or less distinct types of tubercle bacilli, the human, the bovine and the avian. In general, tuberculosis found in cattle is induced by the bovine tubercle bacillus. However, local, non-progressive lesions have been produced experimentally in cattle by the human type, and rare cases of small, limited lesions due to natural infection with this type have been found also in this species. Cases of uterine infection of cattle with avian tuberculosis have been reported in Denmark. Tuberculosis in poultry has been found' to be caused by the avian type of tubercle bacillus in 100 percent of all cases studied. Hogs contract tuberculosis easily when fed on infected milk or when run ning in fields with tuberculous cattle or poultry. The disease induced in swine by the bovine bacillus is often fatal, but infection with the avian bacillus very seldom becomes progressive in swine, the lesions being limited usually to the lymph nodes of the head and neck. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human and Bovine Tuberculosis I have quoted these experiments at length for the reason that they seem Often to be overlooked, and for the further reason that they have recently been directly misquoted. Koch said in his address before the British Con gress on Tuberculosis, If one studies the older literature of the subject, and collects the reports of the numerous experiments that were made in former times by Chauveau, Gunther and Harms, Bollinger and others, who fed calves, swine and goats with the milk and pieces of the lungs Of tuber cular cattle, we find these always fell ill Of tuberculosis, whereas those that received human material with their food did not. Bollinger in 1879 inoculated a young calf in the peritoneal cavity with material from a human lung. When killed after seven months the mesentery and peritoneal covering of the spleen presented a number of tumors from the size of a pea to that of a walnut and which microscopically were identical with those found in pearly disease under natural conditions. The retro peritoneal and mesenteric glands were tuberculous also. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Control of Bovine Tuberculosis: A Paper Before Section VII. Of the International Congress on Tuberculosis, at Washington, D. C., October 1, 1908 Close attention to and observation of the animals undergoing the test are, in my opinion, indispensable. Even with them it is possible for mistakes to be made; with out them the tuberculin test is very apt to be badly discredited. The older veterinarians here will recollect that, prior to the discovery of tuber culin, much attention was paid, both by teachers and practitioners. To the clinical diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis. Of late years this phase of practice has been almost entirely lost sight of, the younger men practically depending on tuberculin as a diag nostic. This state of affairs is regrettable and should be remedied by cultivating, with regard to cases of tuberculosis, that habit of painstaking observation which alone makes for success in the diagnosis of most of the other maladies to which dumb animals are subject. I might perhaps explain that the foregoing remarks on the necessity of care and exactitude in making tests are intended to emphasize the idea that only skillful and Specially trained men can with safety be employed in this work, no small difficulty in itself, when it comes to undertaking a universal and compulsory testing policy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Significance of Bovine Tuberculosis and Its Eradication and Prevention in Canada This rise in percentage of tuberculous cattle seen in the slaughter houses at Leipzig from per cent. To per cent. In seven years is veritably appalling, and no other explanation can be afforded than that the disease, in Germany at least, is spreading with terrible rapidity. So much indeed is this the case that competent authorities there are of Opinion that in a few years there will be no breeding herds left unaffected. If, '1n place of the slaughter -house statistics, we take those afforded by the tuberculin test, the percentage of cases found 1n animals other than yearlings 's yet higher than those afforded by the slaughter-houses. In Germany and Denmark veterinarians have come to the conclusion that the amount of tuberculosis is over 50 per cent. Of all the animals in the land, many large farms being found without a single sound animal. In other words, about half the animals in northern and western Europe would seem to be afflicted with tuberculosis. Corresponding statistics for Britain do not exist, nevertheless the conditions there, it would seem, are scarcely if at all more favorable. Thus in the County of Midlothian, abbatoir statistics show the existence of the disease in 22 per cent. Of the animals slaughtered, in Yorkshire a percentage of Durham and in London 25 per cent. These, be it remembered, are slaughter house results and not those derived from the tuberculin test. In fact, tuberculosis among the most valuable and most highly bred herds is so extensive that extreme precautions should be taken and stringent contracts made by the buyer as well as stringent regula tions framed and carried out by the Government to insure that, however great the cost of the individual cow or bull imported, the animal be found perfectly sound and unaffected by the disease before it is permitted to enter the country. Personally, though in this I speak in no official capacity, I am inclined to think that, taking into consideration the fact that if once an animal has been inoculated with tuberculin it may not give a second reaction until more than a month has elapsed, I would urge that all cattle imported for breeding purposes be kept in quarantine for six weeks at least, and only permitted to be delivered to owners in this country if at the end of that period they fail to react. Otherwise, by any other course, there is a distinct danger that the disease may be introduced into herds previously quite free from the disease. In the comparative inoculations the cultures were approximately of the same age and the doses given as nearly uniform as possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shattuck Lecture: The Past, Present and Future of Tuberculosis I. As already stated, it is in prophylaxis especially that we have gained by Koch's discovery. A few words must therefore be said on the mode of infection. The seed is the bacillus of tuberculosis; it is virtually omnipresent in civilized and settled communities; it succumbs readily to sunshine. How long it may retain its vitality in houses, fabrics, etc., we do not know, perhaps not as long as is often and by many believed. Theobald Smith tells me he cannot keep a culture alive more than three months even under conditions most favorable to the longevity of the organism. To his published work and ready kindness in imparting his knowledge I may here express my indebted ness. We are all his debtors. The bacilli of human and bovine tuberculosis are separate organisms today even if they may have had long ago a common ancestor. The bo vine form occurs practically only in young children, is rare in them, and the risk of its communication from cattle to man is very small unless the udder is tubercnlar. Under no other condition can a sufficient number of bacilli gain entrance to the milk to prove harmful. The meat is safe as food. It is therefore irrational, unlimited funds not being at our disposal, to kill all cattle, otherwise well, which re act to tuberculin. Much less money intelligently spent in dairy inspection, enforcing cleanliness, detecting and elim inating emaciated and sick cows, will serve all necessary prophylactic purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
