Book excerpt: The objective of this effort was to gain a better understanding of the fundamental phenomena involved in laminar gas jet diffusion flames in the absence of buoyancy by studying the transient phenomena of ignition and flame development, (quasi-) steady-state flame characteristics, soot effects, radiation, and, if any, extinction phenomena. This involved measurements of flame size and development, as well as temperature and radiation. Additionally, flame behavior, color, and luminosity were observed and recorded. The tests quantified the effects of Reynolds number, nozzle size, fuel reactivity and type, oxygen concentration, and pressure on flame characteristics. Analytical and numerical modeling efforts were also performed. Methane and propane flames were studied in the 2.2 Second Drop Tower and the 5.18-Second Zero-Gravity Facility of NASA LeRC. In addition, a preliminary series of tests were conducted in the KC-135 research aircraft. Both micro-gravity and normal-gravity flames were studied in this program. The results have provided unique and new information on the behavior and characteristics of gas jet diffusion flames in micro-gravity environments. Bahadori, M. Yousef and Edelman, Raymond B. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation considered measurements of the structure of axisymmetric, buoyant, turbulent diffusion flames in still air. Profiles of mean temperature, mean velocity, velocity fluctuations and total radiant heat flux were completed for methane flames, including careful characterization of burner exit conditions, in order to provide data for the evaluation of models of the process. Preliminary tests also provided mean temperature profiles for propane flames. Test conditions were chosen so that the flow was turbulent near the burner exit while effects of buoyancy were significant over most of the luminous portion of the flames. Both the present measurements and those of other investigators were compared with predictions of a k-E-g differential model, which included effects of buoyancy in the transport equations for turbulence quantities. The results indicated anisotropic effects in regions where buoyancy dominates flow properties suggesting the eventual desirability of multi-stress models for buoyant flames, although extensive recalibration of model constants from a limited data based would be required if this step were taken. Additional measurements and analysis of methane flames are in progress, in order to investigate the flame radiation properties and provide additional data on turbulence properties needed for model development.

Book excerpt: In the first part of this work, the impact of gravity on transitional and turbulent jet flames is investigated through Direct and Large Eddy Simulations (LES). It is shown that in the absence of gravity, combustion damps the flow instability; hence reduces "turbulence production" and jet growth. However, in the "finite-gravity" conditions, combustion generated density variations may promote turbulence and enhance both the mixing and combustion through buoyancy effects. In the second part, the LES/FMDF model is extended towards multi-step chemistry with realistic thermodynamic properties, such that the predictions could be compared with laboratory flame measurements. The consistency of the Eulerian and the Lagrangian solutions are discussed, and an efficient algorithm for parallelization of the hybrid code is presented. Comparisons with the Sandia's piloted methane jet flames (flame D and F) are performed and good agreements in the case of the near-equilibrium flame D have been achieved with a flamelet-based chemistry model, as well as with multi-step kinetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to study the burning of laminar gas jet diffusion flames in a zero-gravity environment. The tests were conducted in the Lewis Research Center 2.2-Second Zero-Gravity Facility. The photographic results indicated that a sudden decrease in gravity level from 1 to 0 effected an immediate reduction in the length of the flame. Continued time in zero gravity resulted in the flame expanding away from the burner until extinguishment appeared to occur. Nondimensionalization of the governing flow equation yielded the parameters used to correlate the buoyancy effects.

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In current study Numerical simulation of turbulent combustion process is approached using One Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model. The ODT model is based on the coupling of molecular processes (reaction and diffusion) with turbulent transport in a spatially- and temporally-resolved fashion over a one-dimensional domain. The domain corresponds to a transverse (or radial) direction; while, the transient evolution of the thermo-chemical scalars on the 1D domain represents the spatial evolution downstream of the jet inlet. The linear-eddy approach for modeling molecular mixing in turbulent flow involves stochastic simulation on a 1D domain with sufficient resolution to predict all relevant physical length scales properly. Firstly ODT is carried out to predict the hydrogen and air jet diffusion flame with helium dilution in the fuel. The comparison with existing experimental data was made for the numerical result of ODT simulation of jet diffusion flames in both conditional means and rms of scalars of measurements and computational results. Another application of ODT was made in present work to verify the capability of prediction of autoignition (self-ignition) of one of free shear layer flow -- jet diffusion flow. Different range of pressure and Reynolds number are set to identify the effects of turbulence intensity and mixture properties on the self-ignition chemistry. Autoignition delay time was studied based on these different conditions. At the same time the ability of the prediction of mixture temperature and species mass fraction profile were tested. A principle numerical result is expected and discussed. Conditional pdf and progress variable were used to analyze the computational result of ODT. Analysis was focus on the temperature growth and the mass fraction distribution of intermediate species and product.
