Traditionally the Bouvier des Flandres had its tail docked and its ears cropped. It is also thought that the ear cropping and tail docking was an attempt to avoid the dog injuring itself while it works. The breed nearly went extinct during World War 1 due to the devastation that occurred across the region of Flanders. A male trained trench dog, named Nic, who served during World War 1 was awarded a multiple titles at dog shows after the war and is considered the founder of the Bouvier des Flandres breed. In modern times the Bouvier des Flandres is mainly employed as a guard dog, a police dog or a domestic household pet. The breed is known to be gentle, loyal, protective and loving by nature. They make excellent household pets due to their high levels of obedience and intelligence.
