Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An all-new harrowing maritime tale of the sinking and rescue efforts surrounding the HMS Bounty--the actual replica used in the 1962 remake of the 1935 classic Mutiny on the Bounty--which sank during Hurricane Sandy with sixteen aboard. On Tuesday, October 24, 2012, Captain Robin Walbridge made the fateful decision to sail the HMS Bounty from New London, Connecticut, to St. Petersburg, Florida. Walbridge was well aware that a hurricane was forecast to come up the Eastern seaboard. He explained to his crew of fifteen that the ship would fare better at sea than at port, and that he thought he could sail "around the hurricane." He told the crew that anyone who did not want to come on the voyage could leave the ship and there would be no hard feelings. No one took the captain up on his offer. Four days into the voyage, superstorm Sandy made an almost direct hit on the Bounty. The vessel's pumps could not keep up with the incoming water and a few hours later, in the dark of night, the ship overturned, sending the crew tumbling into the ocean filled with crashing thirty-foot waves. The Coast Guard launched one of most complex and massive rescues in its history, flying two Jayhawk helicopter crews into the hurricane and lowering rescue swimmers into the raging ocean again and again despite the dangers. Ultimately fourteen crew members were rescued; tragically, two members did not survive. Dripping with suspense and vivid high-stakes drama, Rescue of the Bounty is an unforgettable tale about the brutality of nature and the human will to survive"--

Book Synopsis Farmer’s Son Who Dared to Fly by : HARBANS SINGH SAHOTA
Download or read book Farmer’s Son Who Dared to Fly written by HARBANS SINGH SAHOTA and published by Zorba Books. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiography of an Air Force Officer “Harbans, my friend, I congratulate you for your fine effort. I am confident that all air warriors, the serving, the aspiring, the veterans, as well as admirers of warriors will enjoy partaking of your remarkable journey through life. It is educative, inspirational and motivational. It will be a most welcome addition to the slowly, but steadily growing list of biographical works by veteran air warriors.” Anil Yashwant Tipnis Former Chief of the Indian Air Force Harbans Singh Sahota begins his autobiography, narrating to us fragments of his life’s journey by taking us through every stage of his life; his childhood back in the village of Garhdiwala, full of harmless playfulness surrounded by the love of his family; his boyhood, when days seem simpler while helping father find fodder for the Johri or while listening to Dadi Ma’s Gurbani or learning the team-spirit in the game of Annar Choochi and Gulli Danda; and his teenage, when discipline, goal and academic sincerity paves the way for the man to make a choice. While he is expected to take over the spade and axe from his father, he seems to grow another wish—a wish quite drastic for a farmer’s son. The boy, instead, pursues to touch the sky, quite literally. From being the farmer’s boy from the village of Garhdiwala in the district of Hoshiarpur, he, with years of hard work, dedication and perseverance, chooses to become as an Indian Air force Officer, Group Captain and leader of Squadron, Harbans Singh Sahota—a name that reverberates through the past decades at the Indian Air Force. It is a story told by the man himself, allowing us glimpses of the simple times and simpler rural life in Punjab when mango-picking with a stone was an art and outdoor sports were more essential than hours buried in school textbooks. In fact, the long-forgotten, age-old tradition of learning alphabets on a Fatti or the native games with exceptional strategies will leave you only fascinated. It’s a story that will make you want to live in those times in rural Punjab when life, games and studies were much simpler and fascinating, where faith in God and respect for elders was primary. We get to see the gradual growth of brave heart Harbans Singh Sahota, who, with sheer discipline, humility and valour, takes over the Indian Air Force, inspiring every man he has ever met and establishes his name in the country and abroad. With the telling of many enthralling anecdotes and life experiences of an IAF officer, it’s a story about a farmer’s son who had dared to fly.

Download or read book The UFO Guy written by William Knell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers just the first eighteen years of my life, which were anything but normal.. I began to publish a monthly newsletter of UFO Sightings that I heard about from First Responders, Pilots and other credible witnesses. Penny Saver saw my publication and bought one of my articles for $15 as filler for their throw away sheet. They had no idea I was 10. This book is not just a collection of UFO stories; It's much more and somewhat personal. That's the only way I can explain how I became a publisher Author, UFO 'Expert' and media sensation before my eighteenth birthday. You'll enjoy the stories because all of them are exclusive. You'll learn about UFO Sightings byJFK, CBS News Anchor Walter Cronkite and what Jackie Gleason told me he saw in a Florida Air Force Base hangar. You'll also discover what the government asked Howard Hughes to do for them concerning UFOs. This is a lengthy book, but never a boring one!

Book Synopsis Harnessing the Airplane by : Lori A. Henning
Download or read book Harnessing the Airplane written by Lori A. Henning and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its dawn in the early twentieth century, the new technology of aviation posed a crucial question to American and British cavalry: what do we do with the airplane? Lacking the hindsight of historical perspective, cavalry planners based their decisions on incomplete information. Harnessing the Airplane compares how the American and British armies dealt with this unique challenge. A multilayered look at a critical aspect of modern industrial warfare, this book examines the ramifications of technological innovation and its role in the fraught relationship that developed between traditional ground units and emerging air forces. Cavalry officers pondered the potential military uses of airplanes and other new technologies early on, but preferred to test them before embracing and incorporating them in their operations. Cavalrymen cautiously examined airplane capabilities, developed applications and doctrine for joint operations, and in the United States, even tried to develop their own, specially designed craft. Throughout the interwar period, instead of replacing the cavalry, airplanes were used cooperatively with cavalry forces in reconnaissance, security, communication, protection, and pursuit—a collaboration tested in maneuvers and officially blessed in both British and American doctrine. This interdependent relationship changed drastically, however, during the 1930s as aviation priorities and doctrine shifted from tactical support of ground troops toward independent strategic bombardment. Henning shows that the American and British experiences with military aviation differed. The nascent British aviation service made quicker inroads into reconnaissance and scouting, even though the British cavalry was the older institution with more-established traditions. The American cavalry, despite its youth, contested the control of reconnaissance as late as the 1930s, years after similar arguments ended in Britain. Drawing on contemporary government reports, memoirs and journals of service personnel, books, and professional and trade journals and magazines, Harnessing the Airplane is a nuanced account of the cavalry’s response to aviation over time and presents a new perspective on a significant chapter of twentieth-century military history.

Book Synopsis The Freedom Shield by : John D. Falcon
Download or read book The Freedom Shield written by John D. Falcon and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2020-04-19 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Vietnam War helicopter pilot shares arresting accounts of flying troops into hot LZs and medevacking the wounded under fire. The Freedom Shield brings together stories of veterans of the 191st Assault Helicopter Company, who were tasked with carrying troops into battle, attacking enemy positions, and evacuating the wounded in their UH-1 Iroquois “Huey” helicopters. The unit was assembled from a hodgepodge of hand-me-down aircraft, used equipment, and overlooked personnel—its appearance belied the invaluable work the crews of the 191st would undertake during the Vietnam War. This narrative of the Company, told through collected stories of veterans, defines a breed of soldier newly minted in Vietnam: the combat assault-helicopter crewman. The 191st pilots, crews, and support personnel vividly share the details of what it was like to be at war and forced to rely on your fellow crewmembers for your own survival. Their accounts of helicopter combat at the height of the Vietnam conflict accurately recreate the sights and sounds of the battlefields, the fear and horror of watching close friends torn to pieces, and their feelings on returning to base. Their message is infinitely clear: “The price of freedom is painful.” Praise for The Freedom Shield “The story of the 191st Assault Helicopter Company’s combat actions in Vietnam is one of heroism and dedication to duty. It is a vivid picture of young American soldiers full of P and V and the “want to” needed to get the job done with bullets flying in all directions. An adrenaline rush is the order of the day. Read this book to gain new respect and admiration for the Vietnam-era veterans who fought in this unpopular war—they were truly magnificent!” —Brigadier General John C. “Doc” Bahnsen, author of American Warrior: A Combat Memoir of Vietnam “An amazing story of perseverance and will. The author accurately chronicles how the 191st Assault Helicopter Company was assembled, during the haste of the Vietnam buildup, with secondhand equipment and filler personnel to become a crown jewel among aviation units in battle. A true testament of American mettle that we all still admire and envy.” —Col. Alan B. Renshaw

Book excerpt: The first time Maggie fell in love, it started with a broken toe and ended with a broken heart. At nineteen, she was too naïve to heed the warning signs, and she raced blindly down a path that destroyed her soaring ballet career and pushed her to close herself off to any romantic interest. Thirty years later, Maggie’s first glimpse of rancher Dax Pearson makes her heart stutter in an all-too-familiar way. This time, she’s determined to keep a tight rein on the impulse to throw away her hard-won independence. She’s not looking to get herself roped in by a handsome face, but Dax’s winning charm and gentle touch gradually begin to work their magic, and soon Maggie’s tempted to once again attempt the dance of love. Letting go of the past isn’t easy, though, especially when it has choreographed her life for so long. Breaking free of its familiar rhythm could expose her deepest shame…and shatter her heart beyond repair.

Book excerpt: Widowed Emmaline McCloskey scans her Tennessee farm, ransacked by the Union Army, and says to her young'uns, "Betsy and Davey, we're leavin'. We're headin' out." Sam, freed from slavery by Nettie, is fleeing Tennessee as well. Will Lantrum, a Pinkerton detective, is tracking a northward trail of his own as he aims to capture Buck and Henry, outlaws who prey on escaped slaves. As the paths of these opposing individuals converge, the stakes get serious. Violence is only a step away while the characters trudge northward. As for Nettie, taught by Harriet Tubman to lead slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad, the handsome and courageous Sam might present an even greater lesson about the boundaries of the heart. Peril and romance dance in the shadows of this tale of dual escapes written in historically rich detail and set in a time of harrowing and often horrifying events. When all seems lost, a quilt block cut in half and an old Negro spiritual bring encouragement.
