Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text focuses on elliptic boundary value problems in domains with nonsmooth boundaries and on problems with mixed boundary conditions. Its contents are essential for an understanding of the behavior of numerical methods for partial differential equations (PDEs) on two-dimensional domains with corners. Elliptic problems in nonsmooth domains: provides a careful and self-contained development of Sobolev spaces on nonsmooth domains, develops a comprehensive theory for second-order elliptic boundary value problems, and addresses fourth-order boundary value problems and numerical treatment of singularities.

Book excerpt: This monograph mainly deals with several boundary value problems for linear and nonlinear elliptic equations and systems by using function theoretic methods. The established theory is systematic, the considered equations and systems, boundary conditions and domains are rather general. Various methods are used. As an application, the existence of nonlinear quasiconformal mappings onto canonical domains is proved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 5: Boundary Value Problems: For Second Order Elliptic Equations is a revised and augmented version of a lecture course on non-Fredholm elliptic boundary value problems, delivered at the Novosibirsk State University in the academic year 1964-1965. This seven-chapter text is devoted to a study of the basic linear boundary value problems for linear second order partial differential equations, which satisfy the condition of uniform ellipticity. The opening chapter deals with the fundamental aspects of the linear equations theory in normed linear spaces. This topic is followed by discussions on solutions of elliptic equations and the formulation of Dirichlet problem for a second order elliptic equation. A chapter focuses on the solution equation for the directional derivative problem. Another chapter surveys the formulation of the Poincaré problem for second order elliptic systems in two independent variables. This chapter also examines the theory of one-dimensional singular integral equations that allow the investigation of highly important classes of boundary value problems. The final chapter looks into other classes of multidimensional singular integral equations and related boundary value problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of boundary value problems for elliptic systems of partial differential equations has many applications in mathematics and the physical sciences. The aim of this book is to "algebraize" the index theory by means of pseudo-differential operators and new methods in the spectral theory of matrix polynomials. This latter theory provides important tools that will enable the student to work efficiently with the principal symbols of the elliptic and boundary operators on the boundary. Because many new methods and results are introduced and used throughout the book, all the theorems are proved in detail, and the methods are well illustrated through numerous examples and exercises. This book is ideal for use in graduate level courses on partial differential equations, elliptic systems, pseudo-differential operators, and matrix analysis.

Book excerpt: In the past few years there has been a fruitful exchange of expertise on the subject of partial differential equations (PDEs) between mathematicians from the People's Republic of China and the rest of the world. The goal of this collection of papers is to summarize and introduce the historical progress of the development of PDEs in China from the 1950s to the 1980s. The results presented here were mainly published before the 1980s, but, having been printed in the Chinese language, have not reached the wider audience they deserve. Topics covered include, among others, nonlinear hyperbolic equations, nonlinear elliptic equations, nonlinear parabolic equations, mixed equations, free boundary problems, minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds, microlocal analysis and solitons. For mathematicians and physicists interested in the historical development of PDEs in the People's Republic of China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary Value Problems on Time Scales, Volume II is devoted to the qualitative theory of boundary value problems on time scales. Summarizing the most recent contributions in this area, it addresses a wide audience of specialists such as mathematicians, physicists, engineers and biologists. It can be used as a textbook at the graduate level and as a reference book for several disciplines. The text contains two volumes, both published by Chapman & Hall/CRC Press. Volume I presents boundary value problems for first- and second-order dynamic equations on time scales. Volume II investigates boundary value problems for three, four, and higher-order dynamic equations on time scales. Many results to differential equations carry over easily to corresponding results for difference equations, while other results seem to be totally different in nature. Because of these reasons, the theory of dynamic equations is an active area of research. The time-scale calculus can be applied to any field in which dynamic processes are described by discrete or continuous time models. The calculus of time scales has various applications involving noncontinuous domains such as certain bug populations, phytoremediation of metals, wound healing, maximization problems in economics, and traffic problems. Boundary value problems on time scales have been extensively investigated in simulating processes and the phenomena subject to short-time perturbations during their evolution. The material in this book is presented in highly readable, mathematically solid format. Many practical problems are illustrated displaying a wide variety of solution techniques. AUTHORS Svetlin G. Georgiev is a mathematician who has worked in various areas of the study. He currently focuses on harmonic analysis, functional analysis, partial differential equations, ordinary differential equations, Clifford and quaternion analysis, integral equations, and dynamic calculus on time scales. Khaled Zennir earned his PhD in mathematics in 2013 from Sidi Bel Abbès University, Algeria. In 2015, he received his highest diploma in Habilitation in mathematics from Constantine University, Algeria. He is currently assistant professor at Qassim University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His research interests lie in the subjects of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations: global existence, blowup, and long-time behavior.

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of manscripts mainly originating from talks and lectures given at the Workshop on Recent Trends in Complex Methods for Par tial Differential Equations held from July 6 to 10, 1998 at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, sponsored by The Scientific and Tech nical Research Council of Turkey and the Middle East Technical University. This workshop is a continuation oftwo workshops from 1988 and 1993 at the In ternational Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy entitled Functional analytic Methods in Complex Analysis and Applications to Partial Differential Equations. Since classical complex analysis of one and several variables has a long tra dition it is of high level. But most of its basic problems are solved nowadays so that within the last few decades it has lost more and more attention. The area of complex and functional analytic methods in partial differential equations, however, is still a growing and flourishing field, in particular as these methods are not only applied. Whithin the framework of holomorphic functions but are also combined with properties of generalized analytic functions. This can be seen by the many books which recently were published in this field and also by the proceedings in this ISAAC series and the ISAAC congresses and workshops.
