Book excerpt: This book, a project of the ISEAS Malaysia Study Programme, documents the series of important events that have contributed to the warmer relations presently enjoyed by Singapore and Malaysia under Abdullah Badawi. The eight chapters cover background, solving bilateral ties, intensifying official visits, developing people-to-people contacts, deepening public sector economic ties, expanding private sector economic ties, renewing educational and sporting events, and uplifting future relations. Four useful appendices have also been included to provide the opinions of eminent persons on the current state of bilateral relations between the two close neighbours. In an era of rapid globalization and inter-dependence, the two countries have much to gain by maintaining harmonious relations and by strengthening economic cooperation to bring peace and prosperity to their people. The book provides readers, whether businessmen, analysts, politicians, students or policy-makers, with a greater appreciation of recent developments in the bilateral relationship that will have a profound impact on the future direction of the two countries.
Book Synopsis Malaysian Foreign Policy in the Mahathir Era, 1981-2003 by : Karminder Singh Dhillon
Download or read book Malaysian Foreign Policy in the Mahathir Era, 1981-2003 written by Karminder Singh Dhillon and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: "Malaysia's former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is often seen as the sole author of the country's foreign policy. Malaysian Foreign Policy in the Mahathir Era shows that while Mahathir's personality, leadership style, political ideology and brand of nationalism unquestionably had a deep impact, so too did domestic issues and external forces associated with globalization. The book examines seven major foreign policy initiatives of the Mahathir period: Buy British Last, Anti-Commonwealth, Look East, Third World Spokesmanship, Regional Engagement, Islamic Posturing and Commercial and Developmental Diplomacy. In discussing these topics, the author explains the significance for foreign policy of communal concerns, the regime's need to maintain its own authority in the face of political and social initiatives (some rooted in Islam), and its desire to achieve national development. He also discusses external pressures, including Japan's regional designs, Singapore's defense posture and the growing importance of China for the region. The approach breaks away from the elitist decision making styles and single factor models usually employed to explain the foreign policy of developing nations, and establishes a direct link between domestic politics and foreign policy during the period studied, suggesting that the latter was truly an extension of the former."--Publisher description.

Book Synopsis An Analysis of the Underlying Factors that Affected Malaysia-Singapore Relations During the Mahathir Era by : Rusdi Omar
Download or read book An Analysis of the Underlying Factors that Affected Malaysia-Singapore Relations During the Mahathir Era written by Rusdi Omar and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an analysis of the underlying factors that influenced Malaysia-Singapore relations during the watershed period of Mahathir Mohamad as the Prime Minister of Malaysia (1981- 2003). The study proposes that the bilateral tensions between Malaysia and Singapore were, to a large extent, affected by such things as the burden of historical baggage from their acrimonious parting in 1965, after a short period of unification; the differences between them in their perceptions and approaches in handling bilateral relations; and their political cultures and the leadership styles of their prime ministers, but for the purposes of the present study, specifically those of Mahathir and Lee Kuan Yew. The thesis examines a number of key areas of discord between states and leaders alike. Despite the strong underlying differences, the thesis argues, the two states have existed in a condition of interdependency in the post-1965 period. They have had to find ways in which to suppress the culturally- and historically-conditioned tensions in order to ensure their respective states' economic growth and political and social development. As a result, we have the curious situation in which both Malaysia and Singapore have found ways of maintaining engagement. In doing so, they have avoided raising tensions to the point of conflict, and, indeed, been able to build bridges through consistent, and determined, application to their bilateral affairs. The thesis provides some explanations as why this should be the case.
Book Synopsis Narrating Intersectional Perspectives Across Social Scales by : Viola Thimm
Download or read book Narrating Intersectional Perspectives Across Social Scales written by Viola Thimm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a guide to researching intersectionality. Clear and jargon-free, this book introduces a narrative-driven, scalar, and polyvocal approach to the antiracist–feminist framework. Thimm shows students how intersectionality can be used as a methodology, especially in the analysis of multiple ‘identities’. This text considers complex social inequalities as parallel to one another – not only gender, race, class, and age, but also ethnicity, sibling seniority, religion, or educational attainment. Readers will learn how to investigate, in a methodologically structured way, the interwoven realities of life for different people and population groups simultaneously permeated by marginalization and dominance. With multiple-social-scale analysis and deep discussion of how to conduct data collection, evaluation, and write-up, this book will be of interest to students, early-career scholars, and faculties teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in women’s, gender, queer, and ethnic studies. Courses in anthropology, sociology, political science and, beyond that, engaged research on how people are marginalized or privileged given their axes of identification, will also find the book an invaluable resource.

This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an interesting and informative account of the often fractious account of two countries in the heart of Southeast Asia. It outlines the primary issues that plagued relations between Malaysia and Singapore in the last fifty years and the political, diplomatic and legal initiatives taken to address them. The author gives a first-person narrative of the seemingly endless behind-the-scenes episodes that have brought the love-hate relationship to where they are today. He further delves into the vast reservoir of information on the rocky bilateral relationship to provide a reasonable argument over why Malaysia has behaved as it has since 1965. Exhaustive records of, among others, minutes, letters and documents are brought to light to substantiate the Malaysian view in relation to issues of contention with Singapore. Coming from an insider with more than four eventful decades in the Malaysian Foreign Service, it will be an eye opener for many.
Book Synopsis Identity and Ethnic Relations in Southeast Asia by : Chee Kiong Tong
Download or read book Identity and Ethnic Relations in Southeast Asia written by Chee Kiong Tong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern nation states do not constitute closed entities. This is true especially in Southeast Asia, where Chinese migrants have continued to make their new homes over a long period of time, resulting in many different ethnic groups co-existing in new nation states. Focusing on the consequences of migration, and cultural contact between the various ethnic groups, this book describes and analyses the nature of ethnic identity and state of ethnic relations, both historically and in the present day, in multi-ethnic, pluralistic nation states in Southeast Asia. Drawing on extensive primary fieldwork in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Burma, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, the book examines the mediations, and transformation of ethnic identity and the social incorporation, tensions and conflicts and the construction of new social worlds resulting from cultural contact among different ethnic groups.

Book Synopsis Between Frontiers by : Noboru Ishikawa
Download or read book Between Frontiers written by Noboru Ishikawa and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A staple of postwar academic writing, “nationalism” is a contentious and often unanalyzed abstraction. It is generally treated as something “imagined,” “fashioned,” and “disseminated,”as an idea located in the mind, in printed matter, on maps, in symbols such as flags and anthems, and in collective memory. Between Frontiers restores the nation to the social field from which it hasbeen abstracted by looking at how the concept shapes the existenceof people in border zones, where they live between nations. Noboru Ishikawa grounds his discussion of border zones in materials gathered during two years of archival research and fieldwork relating to the boundary that separates Malaysian from Indonesian territory in western Borneo. His book considers how the state maintains its national space and how people strategically situate themselves by their community, nation, and ethnic group designated as national territory.Examining these issues in the context of concrete circumstances, where a village boundary coincides with a national border, allows him to delineate the dialectical relationship between nation-state and borderland society both as history and as process. Scholars across the humanities and social sciences will learn from this masterful linking of history and ethnography, and of macro and micro perspectives.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Cross-Border Mobility in Southeast Asia by : Michele Ford
Download or read book The Politics of Cross-Border Mobility in Southeast Asia written by Michele Ford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element explains how cross-border mobility defines diplomatic relationships between Southeast Asian states and social and political dynamics within the region's key destination countries. It begins by providing an historically situated discussion of bordering processes within the region, examining evolving historical conceptions of power and sovereignty, and processes of bordering in colonial and post-colonial times. It then turns to the political, environmental, and economic drivers of contemporary cross-border mobility before examining governments' efforts to manage different kinds of border-crossers and the tensions that these efforts give rise to. Having discussed the politics of cross-border mobility in host communities, the Element returns to the question of why consideration of bordering practices and cross-border mobility is necessary in understanding contemporary Southeast Asia.
