Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundary element method is an extremely versatile and powerful tool of computational mechanics which has already become a popular alternative to the well established finite element method. This book presents a comprehensive and up-to-date treatise on the boundary element method (BEM) in its applications to various fields of continuum mechanics such as: elastostatics, elastodynamics, thermoelasticity, micropolar elasticity, elastoplasticity, viscoelasticity, theory of plates and stress analysis by hybrid methods. The fundamental solution of governing differential equations, integral representations of the displacement and temperature fields, regularized integral representations of the stress field and heat flux, boundary integral equations and boundary integro-differential equations are derived. Besides the mathematical foundations of the boundary integral method, the book deals with practical applications of this method. Most of the applications concentrate mainly on the computational problems of fracture mechanics. The method has been found to be very efficient in stress-intensity factor computations. Also included are developments made by the authors in the boundary integral formulation of thermoelasticity, micropolar elasticity, viscoelasticity, plate theory, hybrid method in elasticity and solution of crack problems. The solution of boundary-value problems of thermoelasticity and micropolar thermoelasticity is formulated for the first time as the solution of pure boundary problems. A new unified formulation of general crack problems is presented by integro-differential equations.

Book excerpt: CHAPTER 1 1-1 NUMERICAL METHODS For the last two or three decades, scientists and engineers have used numerical methods as an important tool in many different areas. This significant fact has its inexorable historical trend and it is the inevitable outcome of the recent developments in science, technology and industry. Analytical methods have been developed for a long period and have produced a great amount of successful results, but they failed to solve most practical engineering problems with complicated boundary conditions or irregular geometry. It is also very difficult to solve non-linear or time-dependent problems using analytical approaches, even if they are very simple. On the other hand, research on analytical methods has provided a solid foundation for different types of numerical methods. Because of the rapid developments of science and technology it is now necessary to solve complicated problems using more efficient and accurate approaches than before. Not only problems with complicated boundary conditions or irregular configurations require solutions but also non-linear or time-dependent problems must be solved. Computer hardware and software have developed at an unexpected high speed. During the last thirty years, ithaz become possible for scientists and engineers to use numerical methods with computers easily. This has 2 stimulated scientists and engineers to improve some classical numerical methods (such as finite difference method) and to establish new numerical methods (such as the finite element method and boundary element method). For all these reasons, numerical methods have rapidly developed in the areas of mechanics and engineering.

Book excerpt: VI SOCRATES: I think that we ought to stress that we will write only about things that we have first hand experience in, in a coherent way that will be useful to engineers and other scientists and stressing the formulation without being too mathematical. We should write with integrity and honesty, giving reference to other authors where reference is due, but avoiding mentioning everybody just to be certain that our book is widely advertised. Above all, the book should be clear and useful. PLATO: I think we should include a good discussion of fundamental ideas, of how integral equations are formed, pointing out that they are like two dimensional shadows of three dimensional objects, ... SOCRATES: Stop there! Remember you are not 'the' Plato! PLATO: Sorry, I was carried away. ARISTOTLE: I think that the book should have many applications so that the reader can learn by looking at them how to use the method. SOCRATES: I agree. But we should be careful. It is easy to include many illustra tions and examples in a book in order to disguise its meagre contents. All examples should be relevant. ARISTOTLE: And we should also include a full computer program to give the reader if so he wishes, a working experience of the technique.

Book excerpt: The Boundary Integral Equation (BIE) or the Boundary Element Method is now well established as an efficient and accurate numerical technique for engineering problems. This book presents the application of this technique to axisymmetric engineering problems, where the geometry and applied loads are symmetrical about an axis of rotation. Emphasis is placed on using isoparametric quadratic elements which exhibit excellent modelling capabilities. Efficient numerical integration schemes are also presented in detail. Unlike the Finite Element Method (FEM), the BIE adaptation to axisymmetric problems is not a straightforward modification of the two or three-dimensional formulations. Two approaches can be used; either a purely axisymmetric approach based on assuming a ring of load, or, alternatively, integrating the three-dimensional fundamental solution of a point load around the axis of rotational symmetry. Throughout this ~ook, both approaches are used and are shown to arrive at identi cal solutions. The book starts with axisymmetric potential problems and extends the formulation to elasticity, thermoelasticity, centrifugal and fracture mechanics problems. The accuracy of the formulation is demonstrated by solving several practical engineering problems and comparing the BIE solution to analytical or other numerical methods such as the FEM. This book provides a foundation for further research into axisymmetric prob lems, such as elastoplasticity, contact, time-dependent and creep prob lems.

Book excerpt: This textbook delves into the theory and practical application of boundary integral equation techniques, focusing on their numerical solution for boundary value problems within potential theory and linear elasticity. Drawing parallels between single and double layer potentials in potential theory and their counterparts in elasticity, the book introduces various numerical procedures, namely boundary element methods, where unknown quantities reside on the boundaries of the region of interest. Through the approximation of boundary value problems into systems of algebraic equations, solvable by standard numerical methods, the text elucidates both indirect and direct approaches. While indirect methods involve single or double layer potentials separately, yielding physically ambiguous results, direct methods combine potentials using Green’s or Somigliana’s formulas, providing physically meaningful solutions. Tailored for beginning graduate students, this self-contained textbook offers detailed analytical and numerical derivations for isotropic and anisotropic materials, prioritizing simplicity in presentation while progressively advancing towards more intricate mathematical concepts, particularly focusing on two-dimensional problems within potential theory and linear elasticity.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear stress analysis (a branch of solid mechanics) is an essential feature in the design of such diverse structures as aircraft, bridges, machines, and dams. Computational techniques have become vital tools in dealing with the complex, time-consuming problems associated with nonlinear stress analysis. Although finite element techniques are widely used, boundary element methods (BEM) offer a powerful alternative, especially in tackling problems of three-dimensional plasticity. This book describes the application of BEM in solid mechanics, beginning with basic theory and then explaining the numerical implementation of BEM in nonlinear stress analysis. The book includes a state-of-the-art CD-ROM containing BEM source code for use by the reader. This book will be especially useful to stress analysts in industry, research workers in the field of computational plasticity, and postgraduate students taking courses in engineering mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundary element method (BEM) is a modern numerical technique, which has enjoyed increasing popularity over the last two decades, and is now an established alternative to traditional computational methods of engineering analysis. The main advantage of the BEM is its unique ability to provide a complete solution in terms of boundary values only, with substantial savings in modelling effort. This two-volume book set is designed to provide the readers with a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the boundary element method and its application to solving engineering problems. Each volume is a self-contained book including a substantial amount of material not previously covered by other text books on the subject. Volume 1 covers applications to heat transfer, acoustics, electrochemistry and fluid mechanics problems, while volume 2 concentrates on solids and structures, describing applications to elasticity, plasticity, elastodynamics, fracture mechanics and contact analysis. The early chapters are designed as a teaching text for final year undergraduate courses. Both volumes reflect the experience of the authors over a period of more than twenty years of boundary element research. This volume, Applications in Solids and Structures, provides a comprehensive presentation of the BEM from fundamentals to advanced engineering applications and encompasses: Elasticity for 2D, 3D and Plates and Shells Non-linear, Transient and Thermal Stress Analysis Crack Growth and Multi-body Contact Mechanics Sensitivity Analysis and Optimisation Analysis of Assembled Structures. An important feature of this book is the in-depth presentation of BEM formulations in all the above fields, including detailed discussions of the basic theory, numerical algorithms and where possible simple examples are included, as well as test results for practical engineering applications of the method. Although most of the methods presented are the latest developments in the field, the author has included some simple techniques, which are helpful in understanding the computer implementation of BEM. Another notable feature is the comprehensive presentation of a new generation of boundary elements known as the Dual Boundary Element Method. Written by an internationally recognised authority in the field, this is essential reading for postgraduates, researchers and practitioners in Aerospace, Mechanical and Civil Engineering and Applied Mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains edited papers from IABEM-90, the 1990 Symposium of the Interna tional Association for Boundary Element Methods (IABEM). As stated in the By-Laws of the Association, the purposes of IABEM are: 1. to promote the international exchange of technical information related to the devel opment and application of boundary-integral equation (BIE) formulations and their numerical implementation to problems in engineering and science, commonly referred to as the boundary element method (BEM); 2. to promote research and development activities for the advancement of boundary integral equation methods and boundary element solution algorithms; 3. to foster closer personal relationships within the BEM community of researchers. The objectives of the Symposium, in line with those of the Association, was to provide a forum where the two "souls" of the Association, i. e. , (i) mathematical foundations and numerical aspects, and (ii) engineering applications could be integrated. We believe that the first aspect has been neglected in too many of the BEM Symposia held in the past, which, with a few exceptions (notably, the IUTAM Symposia on the subject) have emphasized the practical aspects of the method. As a consequence, we have tried to give a stronger emphasis to the more theoretical issues: this is attested for instance, by the fact that the two general lectures were given by Prof. Gaetano Fichera, of the University of Rome "La Sapienza," and Prof.
