Book Synopsis An Invitation to the Theory of the Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Method by : Shukai Du
Download or read book An Invitation to the Theory of the Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Method written by Shukai Du and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph requires basic knowledge of the variational theory of elliptic PDE and the techniques used for the analysis of the Finite Element Method. However, all the tools for the analysis of FEM (scaling arguments, finite dimensional estimates in the reference configuration, Piola transforms) are carefully introduced before being used, so that the reader does not need to go over longforgotten textbooks. Readers include: computational mathematicians, numerical analysts, engineers and scientists interested in new and computationally competitive Discontinuous Galerkin methods. The intended audience includes graduate students in computational mathematics, physics, and engineering, since the prerequisites are quite basic for a second year graduate student who has already taken a non necessarily advanced class in the Finite Element method.
Book Synopsis Advances in Discretization Methods by : Giulio Ventura
Download or read book Advances in Discretization Methods written by Giulio Ventura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers selected contributions on emerging research work presented at the International Conference eXtended Discretization MethodS (X-DMS), held in Ferrara in September 2015. It highlights the most relevant advances made at the international level in the context of expanding classical discretization methods, like finite elements, to the numerical analysis of a variety of physical problems. The improvements are intended to achieve higher computational efficiency and to account for special features of the solution directly in the approximation space and/or in the discretization procedure. The methods described include, among others, partition of unity methods (meshfree, XFEM, GFEM), virtual element methods, fictitious domain methods, and special techniques for static and evolving interfaces. The uniting feature of all contributions is the direct link between computational methodologies and their application to different engineering areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A class of finite element methods, the Discontinuous Galerkin Methods (DGM), has been under rapid development recently and has found its use very quickly in such diverse applications as aeroacoustics, semi-conductor device simula tion, turbomachinery, turbulent flows, materials processing, MHD and plasma simulations, and image processing. While there has been a lot of interest from mathematicians, physicists and engineers in DGM, only scattered information is available and there has been no prior effort in organizing and publishing the existing volume of knowledge on this subject. In May 24-26, 1999 we organized in Newport (Rhode Island, USA), the first international symposium on DGM with equal emphasis on the theory, numerical implementation, and applications. Eighteen invited speakers, lead ers in the field, and thirty-two contributors presented various aspects and addressed open issues on DGM. In this volume we include forty-nine papers presented in the Symposium as well as a survey paper written by the organiz ers. All papers were peer-reviewed. A summary of these papers is included in the survey paper, which also provides a historical perspective of the evolution of DGM and its relation to other numerical methods. We hope this volume will become a major reference in this topic. It is intended for students and researchers who work in theory and application of numerical solution of convection dominated partial differential equations. The papers were written with the assumption that the reader has some knowledge of classical finite elements and finite volume methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An informative look at the theory, computer implementation, and application of the scaled boundary finite element method This reliable resource, complete with MATLAB, is an easy-to-understand introduction to the fundamental principles of the scaled boundary finite element method. It establishes the theory of the scaled boundary finite element method systematically as a general numerical procedure, providing the reader with a sound knowledge to expand the applications of this method to a broader scope. The book also presents the applications of the scaled boundary finite element to illustrate its salient features and potentials. The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method: Introduction to Theory and Implementation covers the static and dynamic stress analysis of solids in two and three dimensions. The relevant concepts, theory and modelling issues of the scaled boundary finite element method are discussed and the unique features of the method are highlighted. The applications in computational fracture mechanics are detailed with numerical examples. A unified mesh generation procedure based on quadtree/octree algorithm is described. It also presents examples of fully automatic stress analysis of geometric models in NURBS, STL and digital images. Written in lucid and easy to understand language by the co-inventor of the scaled boundary element method Provides MATLAB as an integral part of the book with the code cross-referenced in the text and the use of the code illustrated by examples Presents new developments in the scaled boundary finite element method with illustrative examples so that readers can appreciate the significant features and potentials of this novel method—especially in emerging technologies such as 3D printing, virtual reality, and digital image-based analysis The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method: Introduction to Theory and Implementation is an ideal book for researchers, software developers, numerical analysts, and postgraduate students in many fields of engineering and science.

Book Synopsis hp-Version Discontinuous Galerkin Methods on Polygonal and Polyhedral Meshes by : Andrea Cangiani
Download or read book hp-Version Discontinuous Galerkin Methods on Polygonal and Polyhedral Meshes written by Andrea Cangiani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods (DGFEMs) have been witnessed tremendous interest as a computational framework for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Their success is due to their extreme versatility in the design of the underlying meshes and local basis functions, while retaining key features of both (classical) finite element and finite volume methods. Somewhat surprisingly, DGFEMs on general tessellations consisting of polygonal (in 2D) or polyhedral (in 3D) element shapes have received little attention within the literature, despite the potential computational advantages. This volume introduces the basic principles of hp-version (i.e., locally varying mesh-size and polynomial order) DGFEMs over meshes consisting of polygonal or polyhedral element shapes, presents their error analysis, and includes an extensive collection of numerical experiments. The extreme flexibility provided by the locally variable elemen t-shapes, element-sizes, and element-orders is shown to deliver substantial computational gains in several practical scenarios.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Meshfree Methods and Their Programming by : G.R. Liu
Download or read book An Introduction to Meshfree Methods and Their Programming written by G.R. Liu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-05 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The finite difference method (FDM) hasbeen used tosolve differential equation systems for centuries. The FDM works well for problems of simple geometry and was widely used before the invention of the much more efficient, robust finite element method (FEM). FEM is now widely used in handling problems with complex geometry. Currently, we are using and developing even more powerful numerical techniques aiming to obtain more accurate approximate solutions in a more convenient manner for even more complex systems. The meshfree or meshless method is one such phenomenal development in the past decade, and is the subject of this book. There are many MFree methods proposed so far for different applications. Currently, three monographs on MFree methods have been published. Mesh Free Methods, Moving Beyond the Finite Element Method d by GR Liu (2002) provides a systematic discussion on basic theories, fundamentals for MFree methods, especially on MFree weak-form methods. It provides a comprehensive record of well-known MFree methods and the wide coverage of applications of MFree methods to problems of solids mechanics (solids, beams, plates, shells, etc.) as well as fluid mechanics. The Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) Method d by Atluri and Shen (2002) provides detailed discussions of the meshfree local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method and itsvariations. Formulations and applications of MLPG are well addressed in their book.
