Book excerpt: It’s supposed to be a temporary job in a temporary city with a temporary coworker… Erica is a genius. She already has her master’s degree and has landed her first job. She knows she’s a misfit, but it would seem her new coworker is an even bigger nerd. The only time she can let loose is at the local club, Zodiac. A place where all her fantasies are indulged. Rex doesn’t work well with others. How is it possible that the fidgeting, nervous woman sent to work with him is also utterly intriguing? As if he doesn’t have enough issues, his heart nearly stops when he sees her at his favorite club with another man. Dayton hasn’t felt a connection like the one he has with Erica in a long time. He doesn’t care what her quirks are. He likes her. And the chemistry between them is nearly perfect. Erica’s motto is work hard, play hard. If two men want to fight over her, she’s not going to stop them. But she’s certainly never been in a predicament like this before. She thought she could juggle a full social calendar. But it’s exhausting entertaining two men, and they’re behaving like Neanderthals. They need to compromise or take a hike. She does not have time for nonsense…

In the tradition of the Spartans, the idea was to see if lovers worked better as a team than merely friends. The experiment had seemed like a complete success until they'd been sent to guard Maria Valdez. After Maria was killed in an explosion, all four men had refused to work together. Addy Constentine needed around-the-clock security if she hoped to legitimise her father's empire. With her stepbrother now in prison, Addy's goal was to keep the family out of the underworld it had been entrenched in for decades. With death threats coming from several different sources, Addy needed the best. She needed the men of Black Dog Four.

Book excerpt: Learning how to write multithreaded applications is the key to taking full advantage of the Java platform. In Taming Java Threads, well-known columnist and Java expert Allen Holub provides Java programmers with the information they need to write real multithreaded programsprograms with real code. Holub provides an in-depth explanation of how threads work along with information about how to solve common problems such as deadlocks and race conditions. He not only explains common problems, but also provides the uncommon solutions that mark the difference between production-level code and toy demos. While it is essential to build support for threading into a Java program from the very beginning, most books on the subjects of Java user interface construction and Java networking barely touch on threading topics. Along with being a basic Java reference, this book is a must-read for any Java developer.

Book excerpt: Nathan is feeling a little lost. His twin brother, Adam, who he usually shares everything with; including his home and women, now has a mate. Thinking he just needs a mate of his own, Adam signs Nathan up to Eternal Mates - an immortal dating site. When Nathan finds out what he’s done, he leaves and ends up getting rip-roaring drunk at Liaisons, a vampire run Unfortunately, he gets so drunk, he wakes to find himself locked up. The only problem… it’s not a police cell. The new grizzly bear has become an overnight sensation at Wildlife Park… especially as bears; never mind grizzlies, are not indigenous to the UK. The only shining light in the pickle Nathan has found himself in, is his keeper, Maria. She’s a hot brunette with lips to die for and a rack he’d give his right paw to be able to… well, paw. Unfortunately, as he can’t shift; nor remember why, no matter how attractive he finds Maria, he can’t do a damn thing about it. If Nathan doesn’t want to spend the rest of his very long life in needs to figure it all out. However is Nathan to get out of this little predicament?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Morse-Sard theorem is a rather subtle result and the interplay between the high-order analytic structure of the mappings involved and their geometry rarely becomes apparent. The main reason is that the classical Morse-Sard theorem is basically qualitative. This volume gives a proof and also an "explanation" of the quantitative Morse-Sard theorem and related results, beginning with the study of polynomial (or tame) mappings. The quantitative questions, answered by a combination of the methods of real semialgebraic and tame geometry and integral geometry, turn out to be nontrivial and highly productive. The important advantage of this approach is that it allows the separation of the role of high differentiability and that of algebraic geometry in a smooth setting: all the geometrically relevant phenomena appear already for polynomial mappings. The geometric properties obtained are "stable with respect to approximation", and can be imposed on smooth functions via polynomial approximation.

Neil Tennant argues compellingly that every truth is knowable, and that manifestationism in the theory of meaning entails logical reform. He extends semantic anti-realism to empirical discourse, developing new accounts of the analytic/synthetic distinction, cognitive significance and constructive falsifiability. The book has important consequences for the philosophy of mathematics and logic, the theory of meaning, metaphysics, and epistemology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how extreme situations appearing to have a destructive potential can actually be used to produce meaningful individual and social lives. It is about the taming of fate. This notion means and accounts for the ability of individuals and communities to rebuild their lives against all odds. The book is based on case-studies that draw from theoretical insights derived from the sociology of disasters. It addresses some limitations of the sociology of risk, chief among which is the rejection of the relevance of the notion of risk to the study of technologically non-advanced societies. The book argues that this rejection has deprived the study of the human condition of an important analytical asset. The book claims that risk is a property of social action which can best be understood through the analytical scrutiny of its role in the historical constitution of social relations.

Book excerpt: A fascinating collection of predictions for the end-times in the year 2000 The Year 2000 is at hand. The end of the millennium means many things to many people, but it has significance for almost everyone. A thousand years ago, monks stopped copying manuscripts and religious building projects came to a halt as panic swept Europe. Today, anxiety about global warming, government power, superviruses, even recycling, is on some level rooted in the fear of irreversible cataclysm. In a landscape shadowed by racial conflict, technological upheaval, AIDS, and nuclear weapons, we reasonably fear the end of history. 2000 looms large in our religious, political, and cultural imagination. But while 2000 brings dread it also raises the prospect of transformation. There is hope to be found in the apocalyptic. This panoramic volume explores how the Year 2000 operates in contemporary political discourse, from Black evangelical politics to radical right-wing rhetoric. One section is devoted specifically to apocalyptic violence, analyzing twentieth-century cults and cultural movements, from David Koresh—who renamed his Waco compound Ranch Apocalypse and perished in a modern-day Armageddon that fueled the millennialist angst of other extremist groups—to environmental campaigns like Earth First! that also rely on the language of violence and imminent doom in their greening of the Apocalypse.

Book excerpt: This volume on TAME systems (Tense-aspect-mood-evidentiality) stems from the 10th Chronos conference that took place in Aston University (Birmingham, UK) on 18th-20th April 2011. The papers collated here are therefore a chosen selection from a stringent peer-review process. They also witness to the width and breadth of the interests pursued within the Chronos community. Besides the traditional Western European languages, this volume explores languages from Eastern Europe (Greek, Romanian, Russian) and much further afield such as Brazilian Portuguese, Korean or Mandarin Chinese. Little known languages from the Amazonian forest (Amondawa, Baure) or the Andes (Aymara) also come under scrutiny.

Book excerpt: Taming the Vernacular: From Dialect to Written Standard Language examines the differences between 'standard' and 'nonstandard' varieties of several different languages. Not only are some of the best-known languages of Europe represented here, but also some that have been less well-researched in the past. The chapters address the syntax of Dutch, English, French, Finnish, Galician, German and Spanish. For these languages, and many others, it is the standard varieties on which the most extensive syntactic research has been carried out, with the result that very little is known about the syntax of their dialects or the spoken colloquial varieties. The editors of this volume seek to redress the balance by taking a cross-linguistic perspective on the historical development of the standardised varieties. This allows them to identify some common characteristics of spoken language. It also helps the reader to understand the kinds of filtering processes that are involved in standardization, which result in the syntax of spoken colloquial language being different from the syntax of the standard varieties. Taming the Vernacular: From Dialect to Written Standard Language is suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Linguistics, particularly those taking courses in sociolinguistics, dialectology, and historical linguistics. The focus on a variety of languages also makes this text suitable for students studying courses which cover the linguistic aspects of European languages.
