Book excerpt: Bingo is a simple game, a format for gossip, fun and occasional windfalls of cash. Yet in Woodland Park, it seems to trigger burglaries and murder. Key personalities focus on these frightening events, among them, Bishop Leland Burkey, and Lt. Chester Devlin, each especially frustrated at their inability to calm a nervous community absorbing Muslim and Sikh arrivals. Jonas Kirk returns from a self-imposed hiatus and finds himself working with a new and seductive personality, Sharon Cunningham. Fancy that—Lady Justice and Mr. Scales. Can Bishop Burkey sanction their work? Can Devlin? A dramatic announcement captures the crowd and a special Bingo game reveals a secret as Kirk and Cunningham restore stability to Woodland Park.

Book excerpt: Menace both real and imagined haunt two Dubliners in this “unsettling . . . seductive” modern Gothic “that ultimately leaves one gasping” (Irish Times). “Vampires, secrets, the mysteries of identity: the obsessions that run through the director Neil Jordan’s films are at the center of his beautifully enigmatic novel . . . of two look-alike men who feed off each other’s souls all their crisscrossed lives” (The New York Times). Kevin Thunder and Gerald Spain have grown up on opposite sides of the Dublin economic divide. Kevin’s father is a bookie and his mother takes in lodgers on the city’s impoverished northside. Gerald, a lawyer’s son, is afforded a more well-heeled upbringing. Yet they share a growing awareness of each other through episodes of mistaken identity. At first, innocent enough—one approached by the other’s confused girlfriend, or being called out to in the street. But Kevin is unnerved by more than a doppelganger. He lives next door to the one-time home of Bram Stoker. And the shadows of the author’s evil creation, as well as those cast by a lookalike stranger, stretch far across his early years. It’s only when a tragic death sends both young men down a darker path, that Kevin and Gerald are destined to meet. A “beautifully enigmatic . . . darkly luminous” (The New York Times Book Review) thriller, Mistaken is also “the best novel I’ve read about Dublin in years” (The Independent).

Book excerpt: The fast-growing body of postcolonial drama is progressively gaining its just recognition in the twentieth-century canon of English-language plays. From the vantage point of various samplings along the Trans-Pacific axis linking English Canada, Australia and New Zealand, this monograph seeks to document the significance of this emerging postcolonial theater. More specifically, it examines the myriad ways in which, over the last two decades, representative mainstream, ethnic and First Nations playwrights have dramatized Europe's «Other» in its multiple guises. In their efforts to match new content with innovative form, these artists have followed transgressive itineraries, redrawing the boundaries of conventional Western stage realism. Their new aesthetics often relies on techniques akin to Homi Bhabha's notions of hybridity and mimicry. The present study offers detailed analyses of the modes of hybridization through which Judith Thompson, Louis Nowra, Tomson Highway, Jack Davis, Hone Kouka, and other prominent writers have articulated subtle forms of psychic, grotesque, and mythic magic realism. Their legacy will undoubtedly affect the postcolonial dramaturgies of the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revealing profile “disappears down the rabbit hole [into] the largest gated retirement community in the world” and what it discovers is “fascinating” (The New York Times). When his next-door neighbors pick up and move from New England to an age-restricted “active adult” development in Florida called The Villages, Andrew D. Blechman is astonished by their stories—and determined to investigate. Sprawling across two zip codes, with a golf course for every day of the month, two downtowns, its own newspaper, radio, and TV station, The Villages is a prefab paradise for retired Baby Boomers, where “not having children around seems to free [them] to act like adolescents” (The New York Times). In the critically acclaimed Leisureville, Blechman delves into this senior utopia, offering a hilarious firsthand report on everything from ersatz nostalgia to the residents’ surprisingly active sex life. Blechman also traces the history of this phenomenon, travelling to Arizona to find out what pioneering developments like Sun City and Youngtown have become after decades of segregation. Blending incisive social commentary and colorful reportage, “Blechman describes this brave new world with determined good humor and considerable bemusement” (Katherine A. Powers, The Boston Globe).

Book excerpt: Are there really laws governing the universe? Or is the order we see a mere artifact of the way evolution wired the brain? And is what we call science only a set of myths in which quarks, DNA, and information fill the role once occupied by gods? These questions lie at the heart of George Johnson's audacious exploration of the border between science and religion, cosmic accident and timeless law. Northern New Mexico is home both to the most provocative new enterprises in quantum physics, information science, and the evolution of complexity and to the cosmologies of the Tewa Indians and the Catholic Penitentes. As it draws the reader into this landscape, juxtaposing the systems of belief that have taken root there, Fire in the Mind into a gripping intellectual adventure story that compels us to ask where science ends and religion begins. "A must for all those seriously interested in the key ideas at the frontier of scientific discourse."--Paul Davies

Book excerpt: Mika Rottenberg’s practice combines video, installations, drawings and sculptures. Many of her works portray absurd assembly-line situations in which work is often being carried out by women whose outsized, far from conventionally beautiful bodies are called into play both as tools and raw materials. Offering captivating narratives in which whimsicality and wit merge with weirdness, and reality morphs into fiction, Rottenberg’s films are presented in the context of immersive installations that plunge the viewer into their world—a world beyond the screen—in a blurring of the borders between the imagined and the real. Book Contents - “Down the Rabbit Hole or Through the Looking Glass?”: interview between Mika Rottenberg and Daria de Beauvais. - “Breaking the Bubble: Mika Rottenberg’s Industrial Attractions”: an essay by Amy Herzog. About the authors - Daria de Beauvais is a curator at the Palais de Tokyo. She curated Mika Rottenberg’s solo show. - Amy Herzog is a media historian.
