Book Synopsis Bougainville before the conflict by : Anthony J Regan
Download or read book Bougainville before the conflict written by Anthony J Regan and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most beautiful island groups of the Pacific, Bougainville has a remarkable history. Tragically, it is as the site of devastating civil conflict that Bougainville is perhaps best known. In exploring the rich environmental, cultural and social heritage of Bougainville before the conflict, this collection provides an insight into the long-term causes of the crisis. In doing so, it surveys such topics as Bougainville’s prehistory and traditional cultures, the impact of German and Australian colonialism, the attempts by disparate local cultures to find a common identity, the assertion of political autonomy in the face of coercion to integrate with Papua New Guinea, and contemporary efforts to resolve conflict and plan a viable future. A landmark collaboration between expert commentators on Bougainville and Bougainvilleans themselves, this volume provides a comprehensive picture for those seeking to understand Bougainville’s history and future directions. Bougainville before the conflict was published in association with the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Project, which is supported by The Australian National University and the Commonwealth of Australia.

Book excerpt: Bougainville is seldom out of the news, yet how much do the press, the financial and mining world and the politicians understand events on that island? The Pacific's most damaging independence movement seems to operate amid claims and counter-claims, internal rivalry and a fog of deception. What do the BRA really want? More importantly, what do the islanders really want? It is more than fifty years since Emeritus Professor Douglas Oliver began his fieldwork among the people of southern Bougainville. His periodic returns from Harvard and Hawaii, and his work elsewhere in the Pacific, provide an unequalled base for explaining the continuities and complexity of Bougainvillean realities. His approach is that of the anthropologist, examining today's events against a background of the peoples' diverse cultures and history, past emnity and mutual dependence. Oliver distinguishes present fact from present disinformation. As has not been done before, he shows how the unintended consequences of past good intentions - by politicians, bureaucrats, missionaries, miner and Big Men - have contributed to the current impasse. Will the current division between Bougainvilleans be sobering model or seductive example for other parts of Papua New Guinea? Is over-population, long-term, a much graver problem than the bitter present struggle over the fruits of mineral development? Black Islanders sheds much light on a struggle which is crucial to the future of Papua New Guinea and perhaps other countries in the region. It is compulsory reading for politicians, newsmen, academics, members of the general public - all those who are concerned about the fate of Bougainville.

Download or read book Mister Pip written by Lloyd Jones and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-04-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lloyd Jones' new novel is set mainly in a small village on Bougainville, a country torn apart by civil war. Matilda attends the school set up by Mr Watts, the only white man on the island. By his own admission he's not much of a teacher and proceeds to educate the children by reading them Great Expectations. Matilda falls in love with the novel, strongly identifying with Pip. The promise of the next chapter is what keeps her going; Pip's story protects her from the horror of what is happening around her - helicopters menacing the skies above the village and rebel raids on the ground. When the rebels visit the village searching for any remaining men to join their cause, they discover the name Pip written in the sand and instigate a search for him. When Pip can't be found the soldiers destroy the book. Mr Watts then encourages the children to retell the story from their memories. Then when the rebels invade the village, the teacher tells them a story which lasts seven nights, about a boy named Pip, and a convict . . .
