Book excerpt: These stand-alone poems were written over many years. While individually they describe the conflicts associated with alcoholism, when read together they reveal a more complete picture of the destruction, depression, and chaos of addiction, as well as the peace, hope, and joy of recovery. Although most of these poems pertain to my life, it is my hope that other people will relate to them also. It's not only my story but the story of so many others.

Book excerpt: The Myers cabin still sits on the original cornerstones where it has stood for over 130 years. The cabin's logs were cut from red beech that were numerous then. It was built around 1870 by Louis Myers with the help of Alvis and Samuel Banks who hewed the logs. After Carl Myers parents died in the mid 1940's the cabin was used for storage and also used to shed a school bus under the back porch roof. Later the front and back porches were removed and the protective weather boarding was removed leaving it to the mercy of the elements. In 1995 & 1996 the cabin underwent major restoration. Several logs had to be replaced as well as the chinking. The porches were put back on. Oak shingles were split too cover the roofs. The author and his two friends Mark Wolfal and Dick Sharke volunteered their time for this two year project. Also Norman Click helped when he could.

Book excerpt: In the gripping sequel to The City'sSon, Pen returns to London-Under-Glass when her mirror sister - and biggest secret - is abducted. Perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. Pen's life is all about secrets: the secret of the city's spirits, deities and monsters that live just beyond notice, the secret of how she got the intricate scars that disfigure her so cruelly - and the most closely guarded secret of all: Parva, her mirror-sister, forged from her reflection in a school bathroom mirror and the only person who really understands her. When Parva is abducted, Pen is forced to make a terrible bargain for the means to track her down, for in London-Under-Glass, looks are currency, and Pen's scars make her a rare and valuable commodity. Kept company by the pretty and fierce steeplejill, Espel, Pen isn't completely alone, but some in the reflected city will do anything to keep her from the secret of what happened to the sister who shared her face. The Glass Republic is the gripping sequel to The City's Son, and the second book of The Skyscraper Throne trilogy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edible Ideologies argues that representations of food—in literature and popular fiction, cookbooks and travel guides, war propaganda, women's magazines, television and print advertisements—are not just about nourishment or pleasure. Contributors explore how these various modes of representation, reflecting prevailing attitudes and assumptions about food and food practices, function instead to circulate and transgress dominant cultural ideologies. Addressing questions concerning whose interests are served by a particular food practice or habit and what political ends are fulfilled by the historical changes that lead from one practice to another in Western culture, the essays offer a rich historical narrative that moves from the construction of the nineteenth-century English gentleman to the creation of two of today's iconic figures in food culture, Julia Child and Martha Stewart. Along the way, readers will encounter World War I propaganda, holocaust and Sephardic cookbooks, the Rosenbergs, German tour guides, fast food advertising, food packaging, and chocolate, and will find food for thought on the meanings of everything from camembert to Velveeta, from salads to burgers, and from tikka masala to Campbell's soup.

Book excerpt: Hoping for a fresh start after her messy divorce from the “ex-husband-from Hell,” Maddie Stewart has returned to her hometown of Penn’s Hollow to run her family’s historic bed and breakfast. Maddie is tired of being gossiped about, lied to, and – oh yeah – cheated on. So she is in no way ready to date again. That is until she meets Noah, the genie – sorry, jinn – she accidentally releases from his bottle late one night. Condemned to life as a jinn back in 1955, former farm boy and ex-Air Force pilot Noah Foster has served quite a few masters – or mistresses, if you prefer – over the decades. However, he's never had a mistress quite like Maddie. Not only is she smart, sexy, and beautiful, she's also not afraid of him. Not even a little bit. Maddie is also thoroughly modern and has some very strong opinions about what jinns and mistresses should and shouldn’t do together – at least as long as they don’t break any of the rules that govern the world of the jinn. As Maddie struggles to decide upon her three wishes, Noah must pretend he’s a travel writer and attempt to live outside of his bottle without anyone discovering he’s really a jinn. A jinn who just happens to be falling in love with his mistress. And for a jinn, falling in love with a human is most definitely against the rules. Can Noah find a way to be with Maddie, even for a little while, or will his love end up costing him more than he could have ever imagined? This 93,500-word novel is written in the modern romance style for a slightly hotter read. It may not be appropriate for younger audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For as long as we have been researching human memory, psychologists have been investigating how people remember and forget. This research is regularly drawn upon in our legal systems. Historically, we have relied upon eyewitness memory to help judge responsibility and adjudicate truth, but memory is malleable, prone to error, and susceptible to bias. Even confident eyewitnesses make mistakes, and even accurate witnesses sometimes find their testimony subjected to harsh scrutiny. Emerging from this environment, the Cognitive Interview (CI) became a means of assisting cooperative witnesses with recalling more information without sacrificing accuracy. First used by police interviewing adult witnesses, it is now used with many populations in many contexts, including public health, accident reconstruction, and the interrogation of terror suspects. Evidence-Based Investigative Interviewing reviews the application of cognitive research to investigative interviewing, revealing how principles of cognition, memory, and social dynamics may increase the accuracy of eyewitness testimony. It provides evidence-based applications for investigators beyond the forensic domain in areas such as eyewitness identification, detecting deception, and interviewing children. Drawing together the work of thirty-three authors across both the academic and practice communities, this comprehensive collection is essential reading for researchers in psychology, forensics, and disciplines such as epidemiology and gerontology.
