Book excerpt: Lithium batteries may hold the key to an environmentally sustainable, oil-independent future. From electric cars to a "smart" power grid that can actually store electricity, letting us harness the powers of the sun and the wind and use them when we need them, lithium—a metal half as dense as water, found primarily in some of the most uninhabitable places on earth—has the potential to set us on a path toward a low-carbon energy economy. In Bottled Lightning, the science reporter Seth Fletcher takes us on a fascinating journey, from the salt flats of Bolivia to the labs of MIT and Stanford, from the turmoil at GM to cutting-edge lithium-ion battery start-ups, introducing us to the key players and ideas in an industry with the power to reshape the world. Lithium is the thread that ties together many key stories of our time: the environmental movement; the American auto industry, staking its revival on the electrification of cars and trucks; the struggle between first-world countries in need of natural resources and the impoverished countries where those resources are found; and the overwhelming popularity of the portable, Internet-connected gadgets that are changing the way we communicate. With nearly limitless possibilities, the promise of lithium offers new hope to a foundering American economy desperately searching for a green-tech boom to revive it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Every bit as good as the beer itself." —SIR RICHARD BRANSON, Founder and Chairman, Virgin Group So what does it take to be a successful entrepreneur? There are many different answers, but according to Karan Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer, do the following and you won't go far wrong: be creative, go the extra mile, have confidence in yourself and your team, get lucky, be disciplined, take the long-term view, learn constantly and don't be afraid of serious amounts of hard work. Bottled for Business gets to the heart of how and why Cobra Beer has developed into one of the world's best-loved brands. It is a story infused with the passion, belief, energy and vision of its founder and shares the ups and downs of how Cobra got to where it is today. But more than that, it is a story of inspiration for anyone who has dreams of running their own business. PRAISE FOR BOTTLED FOR BUSINESS "The inside scoop from one of the country's leading entrepreneurs—essential reading." —Richard Reed, Co-founder, Innocent Drinks "Inspiring! A fascinating story of one entrepreneur's journey, worth the cover price for the 'Financing Cobra' chapter alone. Bilimoria has learned every trick in the book about how to finance a growing business. If you're running a growing business, and don't want to give away the store, READ THIS BOOK!" —John Mullins, Professor, London Business School and author, The New Business Road Test "An inspirational story." —Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO, WPP "Bottled for Business is the extraordinary account of a Cambridge-educated Indian lawyer's dogged pursuit against the odds. The book is compelling, not least because it strikes at the Achilles heel of entrepreneurship in that it details the translation of a vision into reality. A clever and useful book." —Dr Mark de Rond, University Senior Lecturer at Judge Business School and Fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge University "Reflecting the enormous success of his business career, I have no doubt that Bottled for Business will be a bestseller." —Lord Levene, Chairman, Lloyd's, and former Lord Mayor of London

She had lamented the words through gutturals of devastated wails and tear-stained cheeks as she chucked her bottle of anti-psychotic pills through her bathroom mirror. Haunted by otherworldly visions full of shadows and a call to destiny, Traesa’s sanity has been ripped from her. Feeling isolated and desperate for answers, she is forced into a world full of magic and spirits, a world besieged by evil, a world Traesa must learn to survive.

Hal Jordan is about to go from the head of the Green Lantern Corps to an army of one. Jordan's long, illustrious--and tumultuous--tenure with the Corps takes several hairpin turns. At lightspeed. Toward a black hole. In a blender! For starters, the Green Lantern Corps has disappeared, and now Sinestro's own Corps enforces his uniquely brutal brand of law and order in the universe. As a result, Jordan has no ring to sling, or Sector 2814 (a.k.a. Earth) to protect. (So more of the usual for Hal!) Green Lantern veteran Robert Venditti teams up with Rafa Sandoval and Ethan Van Sciver to pilot HAL JORDAN & THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS VOL. 2! Collects HAL JORDAN & THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #8-13. Rebirth honors the richest history in comics, while continuing to look towards the future. These are the most innovative and modern stories featuring the world's greatest superheroes, told by some of the finest storytellers in the business. Honoring the past, protecting our present, and looking towards the future. This is the next chapter in the ongoing saga of the DC Universe. The legacy continues.

Book excerpt: This book discusses a major issue in the food contact materials industry: non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), and their impact on PET-bottled water. NIAS are chemical compounds that are present in food contact materials but have not been added for technical reasons during the production process, and consumers are usually unaware of their presence. NIAS can include decomposition or degradation products, impurities in the raw materials, unwanted by-products or contaminants from recycling processes, and they pose a challenge for packaging manufacturers. In Europe, the EU Regulations No. 1935/2004 and 10/2011 set out, respectively, the general principles of safety and inertness for all packaging materials, and rules on the composition of plastic food-contact materials. Among the plastics commonly used for bottled water and other non-alcoholic refreshment beverages, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most favoured thanks to its chemical and physical stability, its transparency, low weight and good recyclability. Further, very few additives are used for its manufacture. Nonetheless, due to the complex formulations of polymers, processes and storage, NIAS can also be found in PET-bottled water, with potential cancerogenic or toxic effects. This book provides an overview of the European regulation of NIAS in plastic packaging materials, offering insights into their chemical composition in PET-bottled water. Lastly, it provides a useful discussion on NIAS and their toxicity.
