Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Botanical Research Institute came into being as the 13th among a chain of National Laboratories established during April, 1953 under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research by the Govt. of India for advanced research in fields of specialisation which have a direct bearing on socio-economic, industrial and scientific advancement of the nation. Christened initially as National Botanic Gardens, the nucleus around which the institution took shape under its founder- Director Late Prof. K. N. Kaul, was a large herbarium of Indian flora and a centu- old botanical garden spread over 35 ha of land on the banks of River Gomti in the heart of Lucknow city. It’s a matter of great pleasure and profound satisfaction to me that a Golden Jubilee volume entitled, “Pteridology in the New Millennium” is being published and released during the Golden Jubilee year of NBRI in the honour of Professor B. K. Nayar who laid the foundation of the Pteridology Laboratory of the NBRI, which is now a well equipped laboratory for the study of Indian pteridophytes. Professor Nayar is a holistic Botanist as evident through his contributions and publications in almost all the areas of study of Pteridophyta. The contribution of Professor Nayar towards the development of modern Pteridology and the role of NBRI in it is indeed great and very important. His publications will be valuable for the younger generation of scientists in the field as well as for the more mature research workers and teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A comprehensive and entertaining historical and botanical review, providing an enjoyable and cognitive read.”—Nature The foods we eat have a deep and often surprising past. From almonds and apples to tea and rice, many foods that we consume today have histories that can be traced out of prehistoric Central Asia along the tracks of the Silk Road to kitchens in Europe, America, China, and elsewhere in East Asia. The exchange of goods, ideas, cultural practices, and genes along these ancient routes extends back five thousand years, and organized trade along the Silk Road dates to at least Han Dynasty China in the second century BC. Balancing a broad array of archaeological, botanical, and historical evidence, Fruit from the Sands presents the fascinating story of the origins and spread of agriculture across Inner Asia and into Europe and East Asia. Through the preserved remains of plants found in archaeological sites, Robert N. Spengler III identifies the regions where our most familiar crops were domesticated and follows their routes as people carried them around the world. With vivid examples, Fruit from the Sands explores how the foods we eat have shaped the course of human history and transformed cuisines all over the globe.
Book Synopsis Data-Centric Biology by : Sabina Leonelli
Download or read book Data-Centric Biology written by Sabina Leonelli and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, there has been a major shift in the way researchers process and understand scientific data. Digital access to data has revolutionized ways of doing science in the biological and biomedical fields, leading to a data-intensive approach to research that uses innovative methods to produce, store, distribute, and interpret huge amounts of data. In Data-Centric Biology, Sabina Leonelli probes the implications of these advancements and confronts the questions they pose. Are we witnessing the rise of an entirely new scientific epistemology? If so, how does that alter the way we study and understand life—including ourselves? Leonelli is the first scholar to use a study of contemporary data-intensive science to provide a philosophical analysis of the epistemology of data. In analyzing the rise, internal dynamics, and potential impact of data-centric biology, she draws on scholarship across diverse fields of science and the humanities—as well as her own original empirical material—to pinpoint the conditions under which digitally available data can further our understanding of life. Bridging the divide between historians, sociologists, and philosophers of science, Data-Centric Biology offers a nuanced account of an issue that is of fundamental importance to our understanding of contemporary scientific practices.

Book Synopsis Plant Conservation by : Alan Hamilton
Download or read book Plant Conservation written by Alan Hamilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the latest in the People and Plants series, plant conservation is described in the context of livelihoods and development, and ways of balancing the conservation of plant diversity with the use of plants and the environment for human benefit are discussed. A central contention in this book is that local people must be involved if conservation is to be successful. Also examined are ways of prioritizing plants and places for conservation initiatives, approaches to in situ and ex situ conservation, and how to approach problems of unsustainable harvesting of wild plants. Roles for botanists, foresters, sociologists, development workers and others are discussed. This book acts as a unifying text for the series, integrating case studies and methodologies considered in previous volumes and pointing out in a comprehensive, accessible volume the valuable lessons to be learned.

Download or read book Plant Biotechnology written by Jaime Hill and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology, is the manipulation of biological organisms to make products that benefit human beings. Biotechnology contributes to such diverse areas as food production, waste disposal, mining and medicine. Plant biotechnology may be defined as the art, science and application of knowledge obtained from the study of life sciences to create technological improvements and change the genetics of plants in order to produce desired characteristics in plant species. This can be accomplished through many different techniques ranging from simply selecting plants with desirable characteristics for propagation, to more complex molecular techniques. Genetic engineering deals with synthesis of artificial gene, repair of gene, combining of DNA from two organism and manipulating the artificial gene together with the recombinant DNA for the improvement of microbes in plants as well as other living being. Genetic engineering opens a totally new dimension for bioprospecting. The search for new genes and their application is the primary objective of the biotech industry. Gene technology now enable humans to integrate revolutionary new properties in to cultivated plants through inter-specific or inter-generic gene transfer which was not possible through classical approach of crop improvement. This book covers all important aspects of practical utility in field of genetic manipulation by different areas of Plant Biotechnology Techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-based medicines assume a critical part in all societies, and have been fundamental in keeping up wellbeing and battling infections. The distinguishing proof of dynamic standards and their sub-atomic focuses from customary prescription gives a huge chance to sedate advancement. Utilizing present day biotechnology, plants with particular synthetic syntheses can be mass spread and hereditarily enhanced for the extraction of mass dynamic pharmaceuticals. In spite of the fact that there has been noteworthy advance in the utilization of biotechnology, utilizing tissue societies and hereditary change to research and modify pathways for the biosynthesis of target metabolites, there are many difficulties associated with bringing plants from the lab to effective plug development. This book shows the most recent advances in the improvement of restorative medications, including points, for example, plant tissue societies, optional metabolite generation, metabolomics, metabolic building, bioinformatics and future biotechnological bearings. This special review of plants and transgenic systems of extraordinary logical, therapeutic and financial incentive for both industry and the scholarly community covers the entire range from cell culture methods, by means of hereditary designing and auxiliary item digestion up to the utilization of transgenic plants for the generation of bioactive mixes.
