Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen Victoria is the longest-reigning monarch in British history. In this concise biography, Lady Longford, long recognised as an authority on the subject, gives a full account of Queen Victoria's life and provides her unique assessment of the monarch. David Cannandine hailed her Victoria RI as 'pre-eminent in the genre...the commissed biography that the great Queen never got'. Victoria ascended the throne in 1837 on the death of her uncle William IV. In 1840, she married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and for the next twenty years they were inseperable. Their descendants were to succeed to most of the thrones of Europe. When Albert died in 1861, Victoria's overwhelming grief meant that she virtually withdrew from public life. This perceived dereliction of her duty, coupled with rumours about her relationship with her Scottish ghillie John Brown, led to increasing criticism. Coaxed back into the public eye by Disraeli, she resumed her former enthusiasm for political and constitutional matters with vigour until her death in 1901.

Book excerpt: “As my story unfolds through the pages of this book, you may be wondering how I ended up being who I am today: happy, creative, and on purpose; after having been through different sorts of abuse, rape on campus at the age of 19, disappointments, embarrassment from getting pregnant at the age of 23 and abandoned by the baby's father, deception, oppressing and suicidal thoughts, people addiction, criticism, depression, and so on. The past could become a curse and a program that leads you to failure in life. Unless you break the curse, so to speak, or create a new environment for yourself starting with your own mind, you will not find true happiness and success. Through this book, I am not only speaking to those who are hurting, but also to those who have never been through half of what I and others have endured. The wisdom we learn from going through darkness to finally reach our light is priceless, universal and life-transforming. I believe this book is not only a source of inspiration, but a healing tool for those who are ready to move ahead with their lives.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have blood relative spanning one hundred years and in their best interest I believe my life experiences should be shared with the world. It is my belief that GOD does not wish the following issues to fade quietly into the night but to be brought brightly into the light. What concerns me is not the way things are, but the way people think things are. I filed discrimination claims with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against the military defense contractor and EEOC as well as the Office of Federal Contracts Compliance (OFCC) claims against one of this nations leading higher education catholic universities and received (not unexpected) unfavorable federal court proceeding results from both agencies. My concerns are in the area of fair and equal (or the lack thereof) practice in employment opportunities for male Americans of African descent. I worked for two of the largest employers in area one a military defense contractor and the other higher education catholic university. Both employers release me during economical hard times (as lifes history has it Blacks were the last hired and the first fired) the first after (16) years of excellent services in 1993 for alleged reduction in workforce and the other after (10) years of excellent services for alleged performance issues in 2005. Where as in the case of EEOC the director and its leading attorney were both American of African decent, however in general the perceived notion is that both individuals would view this from an objective view point as an opportunity to potentially help correct past employment practices by employers that utilize government funds and discretely discriminate against various protected class minority employees. This activity continually go untested and while the disservices I experienced only perpetuate status quo practices of the past, by both EEOC and the Employers. EEOC performed as I had anticipated (with defense contractor) the findings resulted in there was reasonable cause to believe I had been discriminated against, however the agencies leading attorney when it came to negotiating a fair and reasonable settlement amount favored with the employer and refuse to negotiate. He recommended I pursue outside legal counsel I was provided a letter of the right to sue the employer. I didnt have a chance in hell of over coming big business and the relationship private attorneys have with big business. A couple private attorney firms only conceded to the same standards as EEOC and lacked the will to negotiate. Where are the adjudicators for the people that will judge rightly in every matter brought before them? Due to a lack of financial resources and the ability to appeal the summary judgment after five years of legal proceedings the case was ultimately dismissed. Employers continually go untested and the disservices to protected class employees serves notice that nothing will become of filing a complaint against your employer. Little did I know the learning experiences throughout this process would come in handy some ten years later. The case of OFCC the director and its leading investigator were both white women minorities, the perceived notion is that both individuals would view this from an objective view point as an opportunity to potentially help correct discriminating employment practices by employers that discretely discriminate against the various protected class minority employees. I repeat again where are the adjudicators for the people that will judge rightly in every matter brought before them? OFCC leading investigator did exceptionally well, however due to circumstance beyond the investigators control the ultimate finding were politically manipulated in favor of the university. The action by the director allows the employers continually go untested and was a disservice to protected class employees. The University was granted a summary judgment finding by the legal justice system, h

Book excerpt: Life in idyllic 1960s McAlisterville, Pennsylvania seems so promising to young Nelson Lauver. But undiagnosed dyslexia soon turns hope and optimism into struggle and shame as he falls far behind in school and is branded lazy. Confused, angry, and determined not to be the dumb kid, he chooses instead to become the bad kid- ending up a loner at odds with the world and with himself. Nelson resigns himself to being hopelessly different and joins the ranks of millions of Americans who try to hide their inability to read and write. At age 29, a chance encounter leads to a diagnosis of dyslexia and a profound rebirth. Ironically, the boy who was afraid to have anyone hear him try to read launches a new career as a writer, broadcaster and speaker. An estimated 10 to 20 percent of Americans suffer from a learning disability. 14 percent of American adults are considered functionally illiterate. More than personalizing these sobering statistics, this uplifting memoir goes beyond one man's account of rising above a learning disability. Most Unlikely to Succeed is an inspirational story that will speak eloquently and profoundly to anyone who has ever struggled to be heard, to be understood, or to make his or her way in the world.

Book excerpt: What does it take to succeed? This question has fueled a long-running debate. Some have argued that humans are fundamentally competitive, and that pursuing self-interest is the best way to get ahead. Others claim that humans are born to cooperate and that we are most successful when we collaborate with others. In FRIEND AND FOE, researchers Galinsky and Schweitzer explain why this debate misses the mark. Rather than being hardwired to compete or cooperate, we have evolved to do both. In every relationship, from co-workers to friends to spouses to siblings we are both friends and foes. It is only by learning how to strike the right balance between these two forces that we can improve our long-term relationships and get more of what we want. Here, Galinsky and Schweitzer draw on original, cutting edge research from their own labs and from across the social sciences as well as vivid real-world examples to show how to maximize success in work and in life by deftly navigating the tension between cooperation and competition. They offer insights and advice ranging from: how to gain power and keep it, how to build trust and repair trust once it’s broken, how to diffuse workplace conflict and bias, how to find the right comparisons to motivate us and make us happier, and how to succeed in negotiations – ensuring that we achieve our own goals and satisfy those of our counterparts. Along the way, they pose and offer surprising answers to a number of perplexing puzzles: when does too much talent undermine success; why can acting less competently gain you status and authority, where do many gender differences in the workplace really come from, how can you use deception to build trust, and why do you want to go last on American Idol and in many interview situations, but make the first offer when negotiating the sale of a new car. We perform at our very best when we hold cooperation and competition in the right balance. This book is a guide for navigating our social and professional worlds by learning when to cooperate as a friend and when to compete as a foe—and how to be better at both.

With his heart to guide him, José left his family and went to New York to dance. He learned to flow and float and fly through space with steps like a Mexican breeze. When José danced, his spirit soared. From New York to lands afar, José Limón became known as the man who gave the world his own kind of dance. ¡OLÉ! ¡OLÉ! ¡OLÉ! Book excerpt: Rachel Lyon's first novel – soon to be made into a major motion picture starring Zoë Kravitz and Thomasin McKenzie Lu Rile is a relentlessly focused young photographer struggling to make ends meet. Working three jobs, and worrying that the crumbling warehouse she lives in is being sold to developers, she is at a point of desperation. Until, by pure chance, Lu discovers she’s captured a tragedy in the background of a self portrait; a boy falling to his death. The photograph turns out to be the best work of art she’s ever made. It’s an image that could change her life – if she lets it. Set in early 90s Brooklyn on the brink of gentrification, Self-Portrait with Boy is a provocative commentary about the emotional dues that must be paid on the road to success. ‘Beautifully imagined and flawlessly executed’ Joyce Carol Oates ‘A sparkling debut’ New York Times Book Review
