Book excerpt: In The Art of Prophesying, Puritan William Perkins (1558-1602) teaches how to preach the Word with "studied plainness," not relying on technique or soaring flourishes of oratory, but rather by unleashing the majestic power of the unencumbered Word of God. Unlike so much of the milquetoast preaching heard today, Perkins teaches how to utilize the Scripture in all its capacities: for teaching correct doctrine, for reproof and correction, and for training the godly in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). This type of preaching changed lives during Perkins' lifetime, and it has the same effect today. Includes a biographical preface by Benjamin Brook. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many books have been written about the life of Christopher Columbus and his New World discoveries, this one has a different thrust--that Columbus was not just a skilled, courageous sailor but was also a chosen instrument in the hands of God. For Latter-day Saints, this conclusion is implicit in a vision Nephi saw and recorded two thousand years or so before the time of Columbus. In relating that scripture to the fifteenth-century explorer, the author observes, modern prophets and Apostles have noted the significance of America in the Lord's plan for humankind, the historical necessity for its discovery, colonization, and development, and the raising up thereon of a free nation wherein the kingdom of God--the gospel and Church of Jesus Christ--could be restored and prospered, from which place it could go forth to all peoples in the latter days. Clearly the circumstances would call for a discoverer--the right man in the right place at the right time. This book profiles the man from Genoa who apparently yearned from childhood for the seafaring life and who early began to acquire the nautical knowledge and experience that would make him the most widely traveled seaman of his day and would help him rise to the top ranks in that career. Seized by the spirit of adventure, he began to formulate his plan for the "Enterprise of the Indies, " his dream of reaching East by sailing west. And finally, after eight frustrating years of seeking sponsorship in European courts, he persuaded Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain to finance the project. But adventure was not his only incentive. Stronger than that, it seems, was his spiritual motivation. A devout Christian, he gratefully and frequently credited God with all his blessings; he saw himself as a fulfillment of prophecy in this matter, as a literal instrument in God's hands; he was certain that he was God-inspired in his passionate quest for the westward route; and moreover, a major concern of his was to bring Christianity to the natives of the "Indies." Given this kind of spirit and his seafaring skills, and acknowledging his human weaknesses, Christopher Columbus seems to have been the kind of man the Lord could use for His purposes; and, indeed, modern Apostles and prophets quoted in this book affirm that he was that instrument. This interpretation is borne out also by the story told here of his four voyages to the New World. Published in 1992, the five-hundredth anniversary year of the first and most famous of those voyages, this book brings potent reminders of the important role played by a bold and courageous man who was chosen and guided as an essential forerunner of the restoration of the gospel.

Book excerpt: A profound exploration of how to hold on to hope when our unchanging faith collides with a changing culture, from two respected Christian storytellers and thought leaders. “Offers neither spin control nor image maintenance for the evangelical tribe, but genuine hope.”—Russell Moore, president of ERLC As the pressures of health warnings, economic turmoil, and partisan politics continue to rise, the influence of gospel-focused Christians seems to be waning. In the public square and popular opinion, we are losing our voice right when it’s needed most for Christ’s glory and the common good. But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Discover how, in these dark times, the light of Jesus shines even brighter. You haven’t heard the whole story. And that’s good news.

Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of 2017 “Shirk is a generous writer whose penchant for detail and poetic observation will surprise even the staunchest skeptic.” —Juan Vidal, NPR’s “Best Books of 2017” "Shirk writes with sincerity. In these stirring vignettes, she mixes historical accounts, interpretations, and fictionalized encounters to provide insight into her personal journey tracing the steps of American women who have sought out an alternative spirituality."" —Publishers Weekly “Shirk’s first book examines and exalts the often overlooked histories of religious movers and shakers . . . and offers as a timely antidote to our culture’s current schism between fundamentalist conservatism and radical progress . . . Divine.” —Bitch And Your Daughters Shall Prophesy is a powerful, personal exploration of American women and their theologies, weaving connections between Adrian Shirk's own varied spiritual experiences and the prophetesses, feminists, and spiritual icons who have shaped this country. Each woman presents a pathway for Shirk’s own spiritual inquiries: the New Orleans high priestess Marie Laveau, the pop New Age pioneer Linda Goodman, the prophetic vision of intersectionality as preached by Sojourner Truth, “saint” Flannery O’Connor, and so many more. Through her journey, Shirk comes to believe that, as the culture wars flatten religious discourse and shred institutional trust, we should look to the spiritual visions and innovations of women, who, having spent so much time at the margins of religious discourse, illuminate its darkened corners.

Book excerpt: Summary With thoughtful clarity, veteran pastor and itinerant Bible teacher Bruce Collins explains and illustrates how believers can learn how to hear the Lord more clearly and serve others in using the gift of prophecy responsibly. Author Bio South African born Bruce trained as a chemical engineer before becoming an Anglican pastor in 1983. Over the last 30 years he has ministered in 35 countries teaching and encouraging church leaders and the saints, especially in the gift of prophecy. He served as the first overseer of New Wine’s International Network. Bruce lives in Wales, UK, with his wife. Foreword Bruce Collins, a church leader experienced in renewal, with a proven prophetic gift himself, has written this excellent book, 'Prophesy!' It is one of the clearest and most practical books on the subject I have seen, and I hope as many people as possible will read it. Paul, the Apostle, wrote to the Corinthian church and urged the Christians there to pursue prophecy as a really useful gift for building up the church. In 1 Corinthians 14 he tells them twice to "be eager to prophesy." Too many of us have not got a clue what it is, how and when to use it, and how to test it. Bruce takes it all in his stride and spells these things out for us in a most helpful way. I warmly commend this very practical handbook not only for all would-be prophets, but for any Christian who wants to grow in hearing the Lord more clearly. I also commend it to church leaders. Use it in your home groups or other settings as a practical course to sow prophecy into your church! Rev. David Pytches Editorial Reviews I have been blessed to have travelled to both India and East Africa with my dear friend Bruce Collins. Bruce is a true equipper whose passion is training people to hear the voice of the Lord. Beyond being an exceptional teacher, I have found Bruce to be unmatched in releasing people to operate prophetically. “Prophesy” is a much needed tool to help laymen and ministers alike become more effective in meeting the needs of this generation. Bruce’s approach is Biblically sound and practical; ultimately releasing readers to become more “naturally supernatural”. Rev. Dr. Paul Berube, Grace Outreach International Association of Ministries, Nashua, New Hampshire, USA. I have had the privilege of partnering in ministry across Wales with Bruce Collins for almost 15 years. Having observed Bruce’s prophetic ministry and teaching first hand, I can highly recommend Prophesy! This biblical and practical book will equip you to exercise the gift of prophecy as a lifestyle. Julian Richards, Church planter and leader of the New Wine network of church leaders in Wales, UK. Bruce Collins is a passionate and precise practitioner of spiritual gifts. His sage and proven experiences come through clearly in every chapter. In 1 Corinthians 14, believers are admonished with such phrases as “you can all prophesy” (v. 31) and “earnestly desire to prophesy” (v. 39). Bruce has written a thoroughly engaging Biblical guide to equip any believer to hear God’s voice and prophesy with grace and confidence. Reading this book will craft your life, not just your gift. Dr. Clem Ferris, Author, Stewarding Prophecy, Itinerant Prophetic and Teaching Ministry, Grace Church, Chapel Hill, North Carolina USA. I can offer the highest level of commendation for my friend, Bruce Collins’ book on prophecy. Every chapter offers solid theology on prophecy and acts as a user's manual for beginners starting their prophetic journey as well as ‘seasoned campaigners’. The author offers excellent counsel to pastors, leaders and the merely curious as well as underlining the need for a prophetic journey to be character-based as well as exercising a gift. Critically, the reader will be directed into a life of devotion to the Scriptures, ongoing discipleship and acknowledging the need for grace as part of a ‘holistic journey’ into ‘prophecy’ and corresponding understanding. This book will be a valuable asset in a ‘prophetic mentoring school’ as well as ‘one on one’ discipleship. The world is crying out for the voice of the Lord. Prophesy! will be part of that equipping process. Rev. Alan Ross, Associate Pastor, Gateway Church, Glasgow, UK. International Prophetic Minister and Adjunct Professor in Urban Theology.

Book excerpt: A “superb fantasy saga” (Helene Wecker) of martial arts and magic, about what happens when a prophesied hero is not the chosen one after all—but has to work with a band of unlikely allies to save the kingdom anyway, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lives of Tao “An ambitious and touching exploration of disillusionment in faith, tradition, and family—a glorious reinvention of fantasy and wuxia tropes.”—Naomi Novik, New York Times bestselling author of A Deadly Education ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Gizmodo, Kirkus Reviews, The Quill to Live So many stories begin the same way: With a prophecy. A chosen one. And the inevitable quest to slay a villain, save the kingdom, and fulfill a grand destiny. But this is not that kind of story. It does begin with a prophecy: A child will rise to defeat the Eternal Khan, a cruel immortal god-king, and save the kingdom. And that prophecy did anoint a hero, Jian, raised since birth in luxury and splendor, and celebrated before he has won a single battle. But that’s when the story hits its first twist: The prophecy is wrong. What follows is a story more wondrous than any prophecy could foresee, and with many unexpected heroes: Taishi, an older woman who is the greatest grandmaster of magical martial arts in the kingdom but who thought her adventuring days were all behind her; Sali, a straitlaced warrior who learns the rules may no longer apply when the leader to whom she pledged her life is gone; and Qisami, a chaotic assassin who takes a little too much pleasure in the kill. And Jian himself, who has to find a way to become what he no longer believes he can be—a hero after all.
