Download or read book Sayre Family written by and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-07-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Sayre came with his family from England to Lynn, Massachusetts, in the early 1630's. Among descendants of Thomas were clergymen, surgeons, attorneys, ambassadors, and representatives of almost every profession. Francis B., cowboy, professor of law, and ambassador, was son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson. Zelda was the wife of American novelist, F. Scott Fitrzgerald, and subject of one of his books. David A. was a silversmith, banker, and founder of Lexington's Sayre School. Many Sayre descendants were taken by wars in service to America and never had the chance to win recognition for their abilities. SAYRE FAMILY another 100 years, in a large part, focuses on the early pioneers who came to or passed through the Ohio Valley of West Virginia and Ohio. At least three direct descendants of Thomas had made settlements in that area by the Nineteenth Century. One, David Sayre, came from New Jersey about 1778, and left many descendants who still lived in that area at the beginning of the Twenty-first Century. The bulk of this genealogy covers those, while other Sayre families whose ancestral links were not discovered are also included. The three generations of ancestors above each family block makes tracing easier.

Book Synopsis Risk and Resolution by : R. Greg Brown
Download or read book Risk and Resolution written by R. Greg Brown and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America repeatedly finds itself mired in military interventions long after public buy-in to the national interest has waned. Why is the timely disengagement of military forces so difficult to achieve? Traditional international relations theories diminish the role of the individual leader in favor of the state or international institutions. Behavioral science theories have in recent years experienced a resurgence. However, the dominant behavioral explanation of foreign policy decision-making, prospect theory, while it focuses on how people tend to make decisions under risk, still minimizes the influence of the individual president. Decisions to disengage military forces are presidential decisions, just like the decisions to commit forces to foreign interventions. If we accept this, then it is important to understand if, and if so why, some presidents inherently are more or less acceptant of the risks disengagement presents. This book operationalizes a competing personality-based model of decision-making under risk. Referred to here as the trait-based model, it is assessed using disengagement opportunities in three varied levels of military intervention across four presidencies: humanitarian relief turned nation-building under George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton in Somalia, compellent air campaigns turned peace-making/keeping in Bosnia and Kosovo under Clinton, and major combat operations turned irregular warfare in Iraq under George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Data for the model predominantly comes from existing presidential personality profiles based on the dominant model of personality theory, the five-factor model, augmented by Myers-Briggs Type Inventory data from public sources. This study aims to explain the roughly 30 percent of cases which defy prospect theory's predictions and to better explain those cases where prospect theory might heretofore have sufficed. The results suggest specific personality traits do in fact point to presidents' predispositions toward risk, which in turn help explain their disengagement decisions. This work may be only the second to apply the five-factor model to presidential foreign policy decision-making and is the first to do so in the context of disengagement decisions. Hopefully it will foster further work in both areas.

Book excerpt: Mom—and Dad—lived through a tumultuous age. Th e Great Depression. The World War against totalitarianism. Th e Korean War. The Vietnam War. Men walking on the moon. Robots walking on Mars. The home computer. The Internet. Antibiotics. Google. Mom has seen enormous changes in technology and in social-cultural life—she thinks children grow up too fast and are exposed to too much media. In Mom’s lifetime she’s gone from rotary phones and party lines to cell phones that take pictures and provide Internet service, and from the iron range and wood icebox to microwave ovens and refrigerators that have cold water faucets on the outside doors, and from black-and-white television sets with thirteen stations to high defi nition fl at screens with hundred of stations, and from a hand-scrubbed world of washboards and wringers to a push-button electronic world where everyone is connected to everyone and where every last scrap of information flows instantaneously at the touch of a fi nger. In Mom’s lifetime she’s gone from Jim Crow and racial violence to a country that elected a black man as president, and from the inequality of the sexes to a country where women are in positions of power, and from a world of polite manners and civil discourse to a world where the foulest language is heard and where children think nothing of standing up to adults and telling them where to go, and from a world where the priest and the local politician lorded over everyone to a world where authority in every order and guise has been scattered to smithereens.
