Book excerpt: Hey you! Yes, YOU! Lemme make it clearer for ya, you readers! Will (or Wiley but don’t use that, please) Carpenter here, a 10th grader! Well, umm… This is my real name (I guess). Whatever! I’m slipping off the main point. This is Season 1 by the way! Wanna know a secret? Whether you really want to or not, I’m gonna tell you anyway, ’cus y’all can’t just pop into the book and tell everyone about it. Ha! So I have this stalker called Greig Smirnov? Yeah, I guess that’s what the name was. So, anyway, this Smirnov guy has been stalking me ever since I was… born. Terribly bizarre, huh? But that’s the least of my worries now, as we have moved to Nashville, Indiana, from Minnesota, joined Phoenix High, met the annoying – I mean amazing – Mr. Horace Sparrow, but we just call him Sparrow, and yeah, my best pal, Richie Marsh! We’re like soap and lotion. Yeah, I know that’s a weird simile… Is it even a simile? Nevermind! Okay, then we met Amber Letters somewhat two months after we reached the 10th grade, and there’s something I need to tell you. I felt some tension between Amber and Richie soon after. You think they’re gonna get together? I won’t ruin your inquisitiveness, so you gotta find out on your own. And don’t ask me in person ’cus I might just get really exhilarated and blurt out what happened! And now, we’re having a summer break and I’m gonna be an 11th-grader in two and a half months. Stay tuned with us to find out whether my identity gets revealed (which I hope doesn’t happen by the grace of Providence but I dunno!) and if that stalker actually finds us! I gotta go now. We’re currently in Keys, Florida, and I gotta go surfing with Rich. And read the book, okay? Or you’re… grounded. For three weeks! I’m kidding! I can’t even ground a frickin’ cricket. Just… read the book… even if you don’t like it. I gotta say the author’s got a really bad sense of humour! Alright then! See ya!

In this masterful survey, all genres of popular music are covered, from pop, rock, soul, and country to jazz, blues, classic vocals, hip-hop, folk, gospel, and ethnic/world music. Collectors will find detailed discographical data—recording dates, record numbers, Billboard chart data, and personnel—while music lovers will appreciate the detailed commentaries and deep research on the songs, their recording, and the artists. Readers who revel in pop cultural history will savor each chapter as it plunges deeply into key events—in music, society, and the world—from each era of the past 125 years. Following in the wake of the first two volumes of his original Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings, this follow-up work covers not only more beloved classic performances in pop music history, but many lesser -known but exceptional recordings that—in the modern digital world of “long tail” listening, re-mastered recordings, and “lost but found” possibilities—Sullivan mines from modern recording history. The Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings, Volumes 3 and 4 lets the readers discover, and, through their playlist services, from such as iTunes toand Spotify, build a truly deepcomprehensive catalog of classic performances that deserve to be a part of every passionate music lover’s life. Sullivan organizes songs in chronological order, starting in 1890 and continuing all the way throughto the present to include modern gems from June 2016. In each chapter, Sullivanhe immerses readers, era by era, in the popular music recordings of the time, noting key events that occurred at the time to painting a comprehensive picture in music history of each periodfor each song. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Children and the Law presents cutting-edge scholarship on a broad range of topics covering the life course of humans from before birth to adulthood, by leading scholars in law, medicine, social work, sociology, education, and philosophy, and by practitioners in law and medicine. An international collection of authors presents and analyzes the law and science pertaining to reproduction; prenatal life (including fetal exposure to toxic substances and abortion); parentage (including biology-based rights, background checks on birth parents, adoption, the status of gamete donors, and surrogacy); infant development and vulnerability; child maltreatment (including corporal punishment and religious defences to abuse and neglect); child protection policy and systems; foster care; child custody disputes between parents or between parents and other caregivers; schooling (including financing, resegregation, religious expression in public schools, at-risk students, special education, regulation of private schools, and homeschooling); delinquency; minimum-age laws; and child advocacy. Most chapters follow a format wherein they first describe the most debated or dynamic issues in each topical area, then explain in depth the law and/or science pertaining to the author's particular focus, and finally offer arguments and recommendations as to law and policy in that area. The normative component aims to advance discussions and debates in vital areas of contemporary child welfare law and policy. The Handbook is an essential resource for scholars and professionals interested in the intersection of children and the law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The uprising in Tunisia has come to be seen as the first true revolution of the twenty-first century, one that kick-started the series of upheavals across the region now known as the Arab Spring. In this remarkable work, Alcinda Honwana goes beyond superficial accounts of what occurred to explore the defining role of the country's youth, and in particular the cyber activist. Drawing on fresh testimony from those who shaped events, the book describes in detail the experiences of young activists through the 29 days of the revolution and the challenges they encountered after the fall of the regime and the dismantling of the ruling party. Now, as old and newly established political forces are moving into the political void created by Ben Ali's departure, tensions between the older and younger generations are sharpening. An essential account of an event that has inspired the world, and its potential repercussions for the Middle East, Africa and beyond.

Book excerpt: During the second half of the twentieth century, Major League Baseball and its affiliated minor leagues evolved from local and regional entities governing the play of America's favorite pastime to national business organizations. The relocation of teams, league expansion, the advent of free agency and an influx of international players has made baseball big business, on an increasingly global scale. Focusing on the last fifty years, this work examines the past and present commercial elements of organized baseball, emphasizing the dual roles--competitive sport and profitable business--which the sport must now fulfill. Twenty-five essays cover five areas integral to the economic side of baseball: business and finance, human resources, international relations, management and leadership and sports marketing. Detailed discussions of the redistribution of revenues, the history of player unionization, aggressive global marketing, strategies of franchise owners and an evaluation of fan costs, among other topics introduce the reader to the important issues and specific challenges professional baseball faces in an increasingly crowded--yet geographically expansive--sports marketplace. The work is also indexed.

In The Great Feminist Denial the authors talk with women—feminists and non-feminists, young and old, famous and not famous, child-free and with child—and use their responses as a starting point from which to refocus the key debates. Dux and Simic argue that, ultimately, feminism is still necessary for everyday life. Even the most cursory glimpse at the social and cultural landscape suggests an urgent need for a politics that identifies inequalities, differences and strengths specific to women as a sex. The Great Feminist Denial puts an ailing feminist past to rest, and proposes a way forward that offers young women of today a new way of calling themselves feminists.
