Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books, Bluster, and Bounty examines a cross-section of Carnegie library applications to determine how local support was mustered for cultural institutions in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century West. This comparative study considers the entire region between the Rockies and the Cascades/Sierras, including all of Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona; western Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado; eastern Oregon and Washington; and small parts of California and New Mexico. The author's purpose is to address not only the how of the process but also the variable why. Although virtually all citizens and communities in the West who sought Carnegie libraries expected tangible benefits for themselves that were only tangentially related to books, what they specifically wanted varied in correlation with the diverse nature of western communities. By looking at the detailed records of the Carnegie library campaigns, the author is able to provide an alternative lens through which to perceive and map the social-cultural makeup and town building of western communities at the turn of the century.

Book excerpt: "Susan Swetnam uses case studies of western applications for Carnegie libraries to examine how local support was mustered for cultural institutions in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century interior West. This is a comparative study involving the entire region between the Rockies and the Cascades/Sierras, including all of Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona; western Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado; eastern Oregon and Washington; and small parts of California and New Mexico. The study addresses not just the how of the process of establishing Carnegie libraries but, more importantly, the variable why. Although virtually all citizens and communities in the West who sought Carnegie libraries were after tangible benefits that were only tangentially related to books, what they specifically wanted varied in correlation with the diversity of the communities of the West: "Library proponents in Inland Empire boom towns, for example, touted Carnegie libraries to their fellow citizens as instruments of economic advantage over rival communities; citizens in rural LDS communities promoted Carnegie libraries as a force against the encroaching secular influences they feared threatened their children; a small cadre of Carnegie library proponents in several of Utah's largest cities, in stark contrast, actually promoted the projects to their fellow Gentiles as a corrective to LDS insularity. Economically stable Idaho communities sought Carnegie libraries to reinforce their self-perceived cultural superiority; communities in newly American Arizona sought them to counter perceptions of their towns as 'Hispanic mud villages.' And so on.""--

Book excerpt: Part biography, part memoir, part belles lettres--this wonderful book celebrates the act of reading, the writers whose work awakened the soul of a young man growing up in New York in the 1940s and 1950s, and the history of the city itself. Reading New York opens with 12-year-old John Tytell, confined by eye problems to a darkened room, discovering Billy Budd, sailing Melville's ocean by flashlight in bed. Vividly capturing the excitement of his first encounter with a masterpiece, Tytell goes deeper to expose the heart of Melville's story and of the writer's life. He weaves the same kind of spell--from memory, language, and experience--in evoking his encounters with the work of the other writers who figured as milestones in his own coming of age: Poe, Whitman, Henry Miller, Henry James. And completing the book's vivid narrative is Tytell's story: his family's flight from Antwerp after the Nazi invasion, his own life in New York--as a child, as an adolescent, and as an adult still moved by the books that helped shape him. Acclaimed for his biographies of Ezra Pound and the Beats, Tytell now gives us a brilliant hybrid: acutely perceptive literary criticism that is, as well, an intimate exploration of the experience of literature, and of a city steeped in literary lorc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mutiny on HMS Bounty, in the South Pacific on 28 April 1789, is one of history's truly great stories - a tale of human drama, intrigue and adventure of the highest order - and in the hands of Peter FitzSimons it comes to life as never before. Commissioned by the Royal Navy to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and take them to the West Indies, the Bounty's crew found themselves in a tropical paradise. Five months later, they did not want to leave. Under the leadership of Fletcher Christian most of the crew mutinied soon after sailing from Tahiti, setting Captain William Bligh and 18 loyal crewmen adrift in a small open boat. In one of history's great feats of seamanship, Bligh navigated this tiny vessel for 3618 nautical miles to Timor. Fletcher Christian and the mutineers sailed back to Tahiti, where most remained and were later tried for mutiny. But Christian, along with eight fellow mutineers and some Tahitian men and women, sailed off into the unknown, eventually discovering the isolated Pitcairn Island - at the time not even marked on British maps - and settling there. This astonishing story is historical adventure at its very best, encompassing the mutiny, Bligh's monumental achievement in navigating to safety, and Fletcher Christian and the mutineers' own epic journey from the sensual paradise of Tahiti to the outpost of Pitcairn Island. The mutineers' descendants live on Pitcairn to this day, amid swirling stories and rumours of past sexual transgressions and present-day repercussions. Mutiny on the Bounty is a sprawling, dramatic tale of intrigue, bravery and sheer boldness, told with the accuracy of historical detail and total command of story that are Peter FitzSimons' trademarks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Five Books of Moses is a single book of five sections presented in the following order: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Neither in Genesis nor in the first part of Exodus is a social structure warranted, because in neither setting is such a structure contemplated. By contrast, as a precious gift, for the second part of Exodus, and thereafter for all of Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, God fashions a social structure intended to promote spiritual elevation in his chosen nation, the Israelites; tragically, because the Israelites pervert his efforts to do so as often as they can; as in one hideous moment he perverts it, and abets catastrophe.
