Download or read book Posh Boys written by Robert Verkaik and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The latest in the series of powerful books on the divisions in modern Britain, and will take its place on many bookshelves beside Reni Eddo-Lodge’s Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race and Owen Jones’s Chavs.’ –Andrew Marr, Sunday Times ‘In his fascinating, enraging polemic, Verkaik touches on one of the strangest aspects of the elite schools and their product’s domination of public life for two and a half centuries: the acquiescence of everyone else.’ –Observer In Britain today, the government, judiciary and military are all led by an elite who attended private school. Under their watch, our society has become increasingly divided and the gap between rich and poor is now greater than ever before. Is this the country we want to live in? If we care about inequality, we have to talk about public schools. Robert Verkaik issues a searing indictment of the system originally intended to educate the most underprivileged Britons, and outlines how, through meaningful reform, we can finally make society fairer for all.

Book Synopsis Social Mobility and Education in Britain by : Erzsébet Bukodi
Download or read book Social Mobility and Education in Britain written by Erzsébet Bukodi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon extensive research into modern British society, this book traces out trends in social mobility and their relation to educational inequalities, with surprising results. Contrary to what is widely supposed, Bukodi and Goldthorpe's findings show there has been no overall decline in social mobility – though downward mobility is tending to rise and upward mobility to fall - and Britain is not a distinctively low mobility society. However, the inequalities of mobility chances among individuals, in relation to their social origins, have not been reduced and remain in some respects extreme. Exposing the widespread misconceptions that prevail in political and policy circles, this book shows that educational policy alone cannot break the link between inequality of condition and inequality of opportunity. It will appeal to students, researchers, policy makers, and anyone interested in the issues surrounding social inequality, social mobility and education.

Book excerpt: This report details the performance of the different sectors of the Insolvency Service during 2005-06. Chapters include: management commentary; agency review and governance; case administration; enforcement and investigation; redundancy payments; policy; insolvency practitioner regulation; banking; companies investigation branch; accounts. The major trend reported is a 42 per cent increase in personal bankruptcies, to a total of 53,386, and individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs) dealt with by private sector practitioners more than doubled to 25,000. This increase in personal insolvency appears to be part of a wider picture in which consumer spending financed by borrowing is leaving an increasing number of people unable to manage their financial affairs. Another major feature of the year was the failure of the MG Rover Group, and the Redundancy Payments Directorate of the Service was involved in ensuring that the 6000 employees received the payments to which they were entitled.
Book Synopsis The Educational Systems of Great Britain and Ireland by : Graham Balfour
Download or read book The Educational Systems of Great Britain and Ireland written by Graham Balfour and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Educational Systems of Great Britain and Ireland In this book I have tried to give a brief and fairly comprehensive account of general education in the United Kingdom during the nineteenth century. An impartial and even tedious catalogue of existing agencies seemed likely to be more effectual in indicating the present deficiencies and requirements of these islands than any more impassioned advocacy of my own or anybody else's views. The Introductory chapter was written last as a review of the sections, so that there has been no temptation to distort or even to emphasize any of the facts in order to illustrate the general views there suggested. On the other hand, the explanation of any passages or allusions in the Introduction which seem obscure will be found in the corresponding chapter of the book by reference to the Index. My materials have been drawn largely from the many and lengthy series of Departmental reports which deal with so much of the education of the country, but more especially from the blue-books of the numerous Commissions and Committees which from time to time have examined the abuses or summed up the progress of schools, colleges, and universities - the outcome of what Bagehot called 'the modern stocktaking habit: the habit of asking each man, thing, or institution, 'Well, what have you done since I saw you last?' There are many subjects into which no investigation has recently been made, or on which no relevant report exists; in such cases I have tried to present the best information obtainable, and can only regret that there is no more definite judgement on record, or no more complete evidence to sum up. Download or read book Trivium 21c written by Martin Robinson and published by Crown House Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Ancient Greece to the present day, Trivium 21c explores whether a contemporary trivium (Grammar, Dialectic, and Rhetoric) can unite progressive and traditionalist institutions, teachers, politicians and parents in the common pursuit of providing a great education for our children in the 21st century. Education policy and practice is a battleground. Traditionalists argue for the teaching of a privileged type of hard knowledge and deride soft skills. Progressives deride learning about great works of the past preferring '21c skills' (21st century skills) such as creativity and critical thinking. Whilst looking for a school for his daughter, the author became frustrated by schools' inability to value knowledge, as well as creativity, foster discipline alongside free-thinking, and value citizenship alongside independent learning. Drawing from his work as a creative teacher, Robinson finds inspiration in the Arts and the need to nurture learners with the ability to deal with the uncertainties of our age. Named one of Book Authority's best education books of all time.
