When Aunt Karen’s turtle figurine broke or when Mr. Bell’s bird-feeder fell off the tree, Makayla was there to help. On her way to Grandpa’s one day, Makayla sees her neighbor planting a memory garden in honor of her cat who passed away. Makayla cares about Mrs. MacFee and knows that she should help with the garden, but there are bugs in the garden, and Makayla is terrified of bugs! When Makayla leaves Mrs. MacFee alone in her garden, she feels sad that she can’t help her neighbor. Then, she begins to think about how her grandpa still takes her to their favorite ice-cream shop, even though he can’t eat sweets anymore. Makayla realizes that caring is about doing nice things for other people, even when you don’t have to and when it’s hard to do. Makayla returns to Mrs. MacFee’s garden, determined to overcome her fear of bugs in order to help plant the garden.

The extraordinary memoir of an orphan who danced her way from war-torn Sierra Leone to ballet stardom, most recently appearing in Beyonce’s Lemonade and as a principal in a major American dance company. "Michaela is nothing short of a miracle, born to be a ballerina. For every young brown, yellow, and purple dancer, she is an inspiration!” —Misty Copeland, world-renowned ballet dancer Michaela DePrince was known as girl Number 27 at the orphanage, where she was abandoned at a young age and tormented as a “devil child” for a skin condition that makes her skin appear spotted. But it was at the orphanage that Michaela would find a picture of a beautiful ballerina en pointe that would help change the course of her life. At the age of four, Michaela was adopted by an American family, who encouraged her love of dancing and enrolled her in classes. She went on to study at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre and is now the youngest principal dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. She has appeared in the ballet documentary First Position, as well as on Dancing with the Stars, Good Morning America, and Nightline. In this engaging, moving, and unforgettable memoir, Michaela shares her dramatic journey from an orphan in West Africa to becoming one of ballet’s most exciting rising stars. “Michaela DePrince is the embodiment of what it means to fight for your dream.” —Today “Michaela DePrince is a role model for girls on and off stage.” —NYLON

Book excerpt: From the brilliant mind of Michaela Coel, creator and star of I May Destroy You and Chewing Gum and a Royal Society of Literature fellow, comes a passionate and inspired declaration against fitting in. When invited to deliver the MacTaggart Lecture at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Michaela Coel touched a lot of people with her striking revelations about race, class and gender, but the person most significantly impacted was Coel herself. Building on her celebrated speech, Misfits immerses readers in her vision through powerful allegory and deeply personal anecdotes—from her coming of age in London public housing to her discovery of theater and her love for storytelling. And she tells of her reckoning with trauma and metamorphosis into a champion for herself, inclusivity, and radical honesty. With inspiring insight and wit, Coel lays bare her journey so far and invites us to reflect on our own. By embracing our differences, she says, we can transform our lives. An artist to her core, Coel holds up the path of the creative as an emblem of our need to regard one another with care and respect—and transparency. Misfits is a triumphant call for honesty, empathy and inclusion. Championing “misfits” everywhere, this timely, necessary book is a rousing coming-to-power manifesto dedicated to anyone who has ever worried about fitting in.

Book excerpt: Combining the eloquence and raw sensuality of Jeanette Winterson with the romantic, renegade spirit of Patti Smith, Further Out Than You Thought is a taut and erotically charged literary debut, set against the chaos of the 1992 L.A. riots, about three people searching for identity and meaning from award-winning poet and indie bookshop co-founder Michaela Carter. In the Neverland that is Los Angeles, where make-believe seems real, three dreamers find themselves on the verge of transformation. Twenty-five-year-old poet Gwendolyn Griffin works as a stripper to put herself through graduate school. Her perpetually stoned boyfriend Leo dresses in period costume to hawk his music downtown, and seems to be losing his already tenuous grip on reality. And their flamboyant best friend and neighbor, nightclub crooner Count Valiant, is slowly withering away. When the city explodes in violence after the Rodney King verdict, the chaos becomes a catalyst for change. Valiant is invigorated, Leo plans a new stunt—walking into east L.A., naked, holding a white flag—and Gwen, discovering she is pregnant, is confronted by troubling questions. Can Leo become a good, dependable father? Can she leave the club life behind, or will the city’s spell prove too seductive? Combining poetry and sensuality with an edgy urban sensibility, Further Out Than You Thought is a celebration of life and a haunting story of love, friendship, and one woman’s quest for redemption.

Book excerpt: This book is based on a true story. In 2009 my brother and his wife were expecting their third child. They expected a perfect and healthy baby girl as the sonograms and tests did not indicate otherwise. However, that was not the case. My niece, Makayla, was born with terminal health issues and the prognosis was very poor. In other words the doctors stated she would not survive. This news was devastating for my brother and his wife, as well as the entire family. We knew our only hope was to pray and trust God. This journey has not been easy for them. Makayla is now 11 years old and God has performed one miracle after another in her life. She is able to hold a conversation, maneuvers her wheelchair with ease, and uses her IPad like a pro. She is God's masterpiece and He will always keep her in the palms of His hands. Prayer is a conversation with God. You can talk with Him about your uncertainties, your difficulties, and your joys. In other words you can talk with Him about anything and everything! He is waiting and wants to hear from you. My prayer is that as you read this book, prayer becomes the one thing you cannot live without. A breath of hope in times of trouble, ray of sunshine when life is hazy, and an expression of gratitude when life is good. Yudelka Lugo, or "Judy" as she prefers to be called is a wife and a mother, who led the Girls Ministry for over 10 years and enjoys teaching the word of God. She has a Master's degree in Human Services Counseling, is a Social Worker by profession, and finds helping others very rewarding. The experiences in her own life as well as those of her family are a testament of the power of prayer. She believes God is always listening and miracles happen every day. We just have to be willing to recognize them.
