Book excerpt: Is Scripture really our ultimate authority? Most Christians answer this question by simply saying, "The Bible is my final authority." But, as we explain here, such a view forgets that there is a human being between us and the Bible, which is why there are a multitude of interpretations of the Bible that people live by. Reformed theologians in particularly have claimed that a "testimony of the Spirit," or some sort of an additional revelation of the Spirit, confirms to us what is true. But, again, we can demonstrate that there is no biblical or practical support for this. Accordingly, we are back to our God-given reason and the right and responsibility of private judgment as our ultimate subjective authority by which we live by. Postmoderns are right, then, to assert that our own reason is the god we live by. But they are wrong to ignore that our ultimate objective authority is God, Who our reasoning will be judged by.

Book excerpt: Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort - but if it is overcome, change can come quickly. In Switch, the Heaths show how everyday people - employees and managers, parents and nurses - have united both minds and, as a result, achieved dramatic results: • The lowly medical interns who managed to defeat an entrenched, decades-old medical practice that was endangering patients • The home-organizing guru who developed a simple technique for overcoming the dread of housekeeping • The manager who transformed a lackadaisical customer-support team into service zealots by removing a standard tool of customer service In a compelling, story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline.

Book excerpt: Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control – from the author of The Laws of Human Nature. In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the 21st century dawns, a battle-hardened Authority turns its attention to a previously unchallenged class of villains--the invisible power brokers who manipulate the world's political figureheads to advance their own selfish interests. The powers that be, however, didn't get where they are by playing nice. They've made plans for every contingency--including teams of insanely powerful superhumans with sentient, city-sized, interdimensional spaceships. So when the Authority begins to seriously upset their hard-won networks of control, the backlash that results is as swift as it is devastating. But as bad as things get, these attacks are still comprehensible on a human scale. The same can't be said for what is following in their wake. Taking over the groundbreaking title created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, renowned writer Mark Millar is joined by a host of comics' greatest artists--including Frank Quitely, Dustin Nguyen, Art Adams and others--for this second volume of Absolute Authority, collecting for the first time the uncensored, original pages of Authority #13-29, Authority Annual 2000 and stories from Wildstorm Summer Special! Also includes an all-new introduction by Tim Miller, director of Deadpool.

Book excerpt: What is God's purpose for human reason? About 2000 years ago, the crucifier of the truth, asked Jesus, "What is truth"? (John 18:38). Such questions are fundamental to human life and make up the field of epistemology. It reminds us that there is a human being between us and God. Epistemology has been a hot topic in Christian theology because of how our postmodern culture has questioned the very foundations of knowledge and truth. It is also an important part of a systematic theology as it is helpful to understand how we know what is true, before deciding what is true. This is why Calvin began his Institutes discussing the knowledge of our self, before the knowledge of God. Thomas Oden has said, "No study of God is complete without dealing with the limits and resources of human reasoning in God's presence." While many modern Christian philosophers are neglecting the God-given place of human reason in the process of divine revelation, we defend it here, and offer several critiques of popular views.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Carved in Sand—a veteran investigative journalist who endured persistent back pain for decades—delivers the definitive book on the subject: an essential examination of all facets of the back pain industry, exploring what works, what doesn't, what may cause harm, and how to get on the road to recovery. In her effort to manage her chronic back pain, investigative reporter Cathryn Jakobson Ramin spent years and a small fortune on a panoply of treatments. But her discomfort only intensified, leaving her feeling frustrated and perplexed. As she searched for better solutions, she exposed a much bigger problem. Costing roughly $100 billion a year, spine medicine—often ineffective and sometimes harmful —exemplified the worst aspects of the U.S. health care system. The result of six years of intensive investigation, Crooked offers a startling look at the poorly identified risks of spine medicine, and provides practical advice and solutions. Ramin interviewed scores of spine surgeons, pain management doctors, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, chiropractors, specialized bodywork practitioners. She met with many patients whose pain and desperation led them to make life-altering decisions, and with others who triumphed over their limitations. The result is a brilliant and comprehensive book that is not only important but essential to millions of back pain sufferers, and all types of health care professionals. Ramin shatters assumptions about surgery, chiropractic methods, physical therapy, spinal injections and painkillers, and addresses evidence-based rehabilitation options—showing, in detail, how to avoid therapeutic dead ends, while saving money, time, and considerable anguish. With Crooked, she reveals what it takes to outwit the back pain industry and get on the road to recovery.
