Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the connections between cattle branding and Christian salvation, between livestock castration and square dancing, between rustling and the making of spurs and horsehair bridles in prison, between children's coloring books and cowboy poetry as it is practiced today? The Cowboy usesliterary, historical, folkloric, and pop cultural sources to document ways in which cowboys address religion, gender, economics, and literature. Arguing that cowboys are defined by the work they do, Allmendinger sets out in each chapter to investigate one form of labor (such as branding, castration,or rustling) that cowboys perform in their "work culture." He then looks at early oral poems that cowboys recited around campfires, on trail drives, at roundups, and at home in their bunkhouses, and at later poems, histories and autobiographies written by cowboys--most of which have never beforebeen studied by scholars. He discovers that these texts not only deal with work but with larger concerns, including art, morality, spirituality, and male sexuality. In addition to spotlighting little-known texts, art, and archival sources, The Cowboy examines the works of Twain, Steinbeck, Cather,Norris, Dana, McMurtry, and others, and features more than 60 historic photographs, many of which have not been published until now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavery has existed in many parts of the world since ancient times. But in the Caribbean British colony, the enslavement of Africans began in the 1600s and 1610s. Many Caribbean plantation owners were slave owners though both men came to believe that slavery was morally wrong. Slavery flourished in the Caribbean. In most of the US states, there were large cotton and tobacco farms that required slave workers. During the revolution in the years 1776s to 1783s in the West, it began to turn against slavery, believing it violated the US Constitution’s promise that “all men and women are created equal.’ As the 1800s began, Northern abolitionists were starting a crusade to end slavery while Southerners insisted on their right to continue their traditional way of life, which included owning slaves, which affected the Caribbean as well. Ram Chatar was born in the 1820s and reached the Caribbean sometime in the 1840s when the business of buying and selling slaves by the plantation owners was booming. Most of them were field hands, working to raise and harvest crops. Mostly slave women were domestic servants working in the plantation houses. The rising anger in the West and the Caribbean on the issue of slavery helped bring about American Civil War. When the war ended in 1865, slavery was abolished in the West but remain in the Caribbean and took a little time to end.

Book excerpt: Growing up as the child of an alcoholic can be full of heartbreak, disappointment, and pain-but it can also contain moments of brilliance, passion, and love. In Cowboy Dad: Love, Alcoholism, and a Dying Way of Life, author Melissa Broughton offers a raw and candid look at life with her alcoholic father, as well as the beautiful country lifestyle she led while living on a small-town ranch. Poignant but also full of humor and wit, these true stories take a heart wrenchingly honest look at alcoholism, grief, death, and faith while detailing a tight-knit family's attempt to cope with a horrible disease...and its profound consequences. Both inspiring and encouraging, these tales detail Broughton's life growing up on the ranch under the specter of addiction and convey the acute effect that alcoholism can have-not only on the addicts, but also on the loved ones around them. For fans of Elizabeth Gilbert, Cheryl Strayed, and Anne Lamott, Cowboy Dad is a beautiful story of family, sorrow, and learning how to separate the person from the disease.

Book excerpt: Set deep in the wilds of Texas is Caddo Lake, a rich, primeval swampland populated by characters straight out of modern mythology. Central to this areas history is Judge Newland and his extended circle of friends and kina.k.a., the BOND. Here, their story is told in a vivid, often convoluted fashion, as is befitting the true nature of the Texas wilderness. Judge Daddy Newland knewand was known byeveryone in this part of Texas, and his teachings were legendary. He urged his friends to seek truth and to ask for wisdom from God. He expected them to ask tough questions. He demanded that they keep their eyes against the seductive nature of evil and hate and that they look out for one another. He believed that nature was the only true beauty in the world and that it should always remain free. He knew that love was the most important of all emotions, followed only by hopeand that the two could never be separated. He directed his friends to look to the ancient world for truth and inspiration. And from those ancients, he formulated a deep appreciation for the pleasures of the flesh. Daddy Newland directed his grandson, Kenneth Brown, to use his skills to share the teachings of his generation. Just as he was promised, those life lessons are within, ready to teach the next generation of Texans and beyond. Fate brings interesting people together and then blesses the responsible, he used to say, and thats the core of his legacy.
