The main advantage of such bar relative to the conventional steel reinforcing bars is their resistance to corrosion. The reinforced plastic bars are slightly different from the conventional steel bars both geometrically and mechanically. Thus, research is needed to understand their behavior and to be able to use them in concrete reinforcement with adequate reliability. Bond strength of reinforced plastic bars in concrete is one of the mechanical and behavioral differences with the steel bars. This paper presents the results of pullout and beam tests conducted to determine the bond stress-slip behavior of FRP bars in concrete.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes an experimental program that investigated the bond variability of glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) reinforcement in concrete. The variables in the study were manufacturer (Marshall Industries Composites, Inc. M1 and Corrosion Proof Products/Hughes Brothers M2), bar size (No. 5 and 6), cover (2 and 3 bar diameters), and embedment length (10 through 47 in.). Tensile tests were also performed on the GFRP rebar for comparison to bond tests that exhibited bar failure. Eighty-four inverted half-beam bond specimens were tested while monitoring load, loaded-end slip, free-end slip, cracking, and acoustic emissions on the embedded bar and concrete. Three to six replicate tests were conducted for each set of variables. The results of each test within a series were examined to investigate the relative variability with respect to the failure types. The M1 rebar was observed to rely primarily on mechanical interlock to develop bond strength. This conclusion was based on investigations of the rebar surface condition, bar deformation geometry, slip curves, AE results, crack patterns and forensic investigations. Additionally, the ultimate loads for the bond tests with the Ml rebar were affected by changes in embedment lengths but did not vary for tests with 2 and 3d(b) cover. The cover may not have had an influence because the majority of the tests failed with ultimate loads within two standard deviations of the tensile test average. A 15.0 in. development length was selected for these bars embedded with 2 or 3d(b) cover. The corresponding 1/K1 value for this development length was 15.9. Overall the Ml rebar had coefficients of variation (COV) of 14.3 and 8.9% for bond tests that exhibited bar failure and tensile test bar failures, respectively. The bond tests that failed in concrete splitting had COVs from 5.2 to 5.9%.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Corrosion of steel reinforcement and carbon dioxide emissions are two major global problems. Different methods, techniques, and materials have been implemented to mitigate these problems. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar presents itself as a solid alternative to replace conventional steel reinforcement owing to its fantastic features in resisting corrosion. Its demand is progressively increasing. Cement-based concrete, on the other hand, is not eco-friendly due to the excessive amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions yielded from its cement production. One of the alternatives used to mitigate the use of cement in concrete is fly ash. Fly ash is considered a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) and has been only implemented partially to replace cement as a binding material in concrete, however its application has been limited to only limited doses (lower than 30%). In this study, durability and bond-slip investigations were carried out. The durability study was done on GFRP bars extracted from eleven bridges across the United States after being in service from 12 to 20 years. Several tests were conducted on the bar and the surrounding concrete to make the assessment. The tests results showed that there were slight sings for environmental attack but did not show any obvious signs for microstructural deteriorations. In addition, a bond-slip investigation was carried out to evaluate the bond performance of GFRP bars embedded in fly ash-based sustainable concrete. A high-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete was implemented; 50% and 70% cement replaced with fly ash were used. The results showed that GFRP bars had less bond strength than that resulted from mild steel bars"--Abstract, page iv.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The composite FRP rebars research at Oregon State University was initiated in 1993 principally to develop a non-metallic hollow reinforcement. It was recognized that the tensile properties of such reinforcement are unquestionably superior to steel, but its performance in concrete could be problematic. The bond between FRP rebars and concrete was identified as a critical area of concern. The purpose of this study is (i) to analyze a variety of FRP and steel reinforcing units; (ii) to advance the knowledge of bond mechanism, failure modes, and parameters influencing the bond strength; (iii) to compare composite rebars to conventional steel and to assess their applicability as reinforcing members. Commercially available FRP rebars were investigated. Particular emphasis was given to a hollow glass FRP rod designed at Oregon State University. Several parameters were investigated, including: failure mode, concrete compressive strength, rebar diameter and circumference/cross section ratio, embedment length, concrete cover, and microstructure of the composite rebars. It was recognized that the ASTM C234-90 pull-out standard is test of concrete strength. Therefore a modified pull-out test was developed for evaluating the bond strength behavior. A newly developed European bond test procedure was compared with locally modified version of the pull-out method. The new procedure was used for the first time in the United States. The study demonstrated a phenomenon, not reported in the published research at this time, defined as a size effect. The size effects result in lower bond strength with increasing area of the interface between FRP bars and concrete. The next phase of the research was dedicated to the hollow glass FRP rebar. The goal was to compare its bond properties to conventional steel and solid FRP bars. The study led to two new phenomena not described in the literature previously. Results showed that the concrete compressive strength does not significantly affect the bond strength. This observation was in contradiction with the bond strength theory which considers the concrete strength as major variable. The second observation revealed significant difference in bond performance between bars with different microstructures. It is recommended that microstructure of the FRP bars be considered as a variable when investigating bond strength.

Book excerpt: Due to the corrosion vulnerability of steel bars in aggressive environment, the need arises for a substitute material that would provide better serviceability p erformance. Consequently, the use of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars evolves as a viable alternative for conventional steel reinforcement. As a relat ively new material there are no enough research studies conducted on the strengt h and performance of GFRP reinforced in concrete and therefore experimental data is greatly needed. This proposed research concentrates on experimental evaluati on of the bond aspect between GFRP bars and concrete as being one of the most im portant aspects that control the structural performance and serviceability of re inforced concrete (RC) structures. Two types of bond failure will be evaluated, namely splitting and pullout modes. The experimental results will be used for va lidating the accuracy of available design expressions or generating new expressi ons of the development/splice strength of GFRP bars in tension.
