Book excerpt: Near-surface mounted (NSM) method using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites proves to be promising in structural strengthening and rehabilitation of deficient reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete members. However, the fatigue behavior of strengthened members is still not well understood and needs extensive research before practical design guidelines are established. The objective of this research is to experimentally and analytically assess the fatigue performance and predict the fatigue life of NSM CFRP strengthened RC beams. In particular, it aims to: (1) experimentally evaluate the bond performance of the NSM CFRP reinforcement-epoxy interface and its degradation; (2) propose an analytical model to predict the bond performance; (3) evaluate the test results of the flexural performance of the NSM CFRP strengthened RC beams subject to fatigue loadings; and (4) develop models to predict the corresponding flexural performance and fatigue life of the strengthened concrete members. Thirty-six NSM strengthened concrete block specimens were fabricated and then subject to various fatigue loadings. Direct pull-out test was conducted on each specimen to obtain the bond characteristics and performance. Variables considered in this study include: cycles of fatigue loadings and types of NSM reinforcements. The result shows that specimens using NSM rods had higher bond strength at the epoxy-NSM interface than that at the concrete-epoxy interface, resulting in the governing failure due to breakage of epoxy and concrete. Specimens using NSM strips, on the other hand, failed mainly due to debonding (at the epoxy-NSM interface). Moreover, fatigue loading tended to shift the FRP strain and the local bond stress distribution from the loaded end towards the free end in NSM-strengthened specimens. The local bond stress-slip relationship under fatigue followed a hardening-softening behavior for both types of NSM reinforcement. Fatigue loading generally decreased the bond strength while the corresponding slip remained almost unchanged. A theoretical solution to this bond characteristics under fatigue loading is derived to predict the debonded length progression and fatigue behavior of the bond related variables (e.g. distribution of bond stress, slip, and tensile stress of the NSM reinforcement) for concrete blocks strengthened by NSM CFRP reinforcement. Twenty RC beams strengthened with NSM FRP were constructed in 2 batches, one strengthened by NSM rods and the other by NSM strips. Sixteen NSM strengthened specimens were subject to different levels of fatigue loading until failure, while four strengthened specimens were tested under monotonic loadings. Typical elastic-plastic behavior was observed in monotonic test, yielding of specimen occurred when the tensile strain of steel rebar reached around 0.2%. Most fatigue specimens failed by rebar rupture and small group of specimens failed by debonding between NSM and concrete. However, unstable crack propagation was also observed to occur with rebar rupture in certain specimens, especially specimens with lower fatigue load and longer fatigue life. The crack and deflection progression could be generally divided into three distinct stages: (1) initial stage with decelerating increase; (2) steady stage with increase of constant and small rate; (3) final unstable stage of accelerating increase, and the second stage occupied most of fatigue life. An analytical solution to the flexural response of the RC beams strengthened with NSM CFRP reinforcement is derived, using a trilinear bond-slip relation for the CFRP-epoxy interface and the previously derived theoretical solution to bond characteristics. As the analytical model provides solution to flexural response, an independent fatigue life prediction model is also developed for reinforced concrete beams strengthened with NSM FRP rods under flexural fatigue loading. The model is based on the fracture-mechanics approach using cohesive model and capable of predicting fatigue life due to rebar rupture, where the effect of cohesive stresses due to aggregate, steel rebar, NSM FRP reinforcement is approximated by specific cohesion laws.In conclusion, this dissertation presents thorough and detailed research to experimentally and analytically investigate the flexural behavior of NSM FRP beams, including the strain of FRP, rebar and concrete, deflection, and crack progression, etc. Moreover, approaches to address the fatigue life prediction is also proposed and verified by experimental results.

Much research has been conducted over the last two decades to evaluate the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) in concrete structures. Structural engineering researchers have been testing FRP to determine their usability instead of steel for strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures, reinforcing new concrete members, and for prestressed concrete applications. The high strength-to-weight ratio of FRP materials, especially Carbon FRP (CFRP), and their non-corrosive nature are probably the most attractive features of FRPs. In this study, an experimental program was conducted to investigate the flexural behavior of prestressed concrete beams pre-tensioned with CFRP strands. The bond characteristics were examined by means of experimentally measuring transfer length, flexural bond length, and bond stress profiles. A total of four rectangular beams pre-tensioned with one 0.5-in. diameter CFRP strand were fabricated and tested under cyclic loading for five cycles, followed by a monotonically increasing load until failure. In investigating bond properties, the experimental results were compared to the equations available in the literature. The results from the four flexural tests showed that the main problem of CFRP strands, in addition to their liner-elastic tensile behavior, was lack of adequate bonding between FRP and concrete. Poor bonding resulted in early failure due to slippage between FRPs and concrete. As a result, a new technique was developed in order to solve the bonding issues and improve the flexural response of CFRP prestressed concrete beams. The new technique involved anchoring the CFRP strands at the ends of the concrete beams using a new "steel tube" anchorage system. It was concluded that the new technique solved the bond problem and improved the flexural capacity by about 46%. A computer model was created to predict the behavior of prestressed beams pre-tensioned with CFRP. The predicted behavior was compared to the experimental results. Finally, the experimental results were compared to the behavior of prestressed concrete beams pre-tensioned with steel strands as generated by the computer model. The CFRP beams showed higher strength but lower ductility.

However, due to the issue of corrosion these strengthening systems may lose their efficiency with time. FRP materials have been used to strengthen many structural components of different shapes and types. FRP jackets, FRP Strips, and FRP rods have commonly been used to rehabilitate existing structural components. The many advantages of using FRP as strengthening materials have made this material an attractive alternative: advantages such as lightweight, high strength, and ease of setting up. Among the many applications using FRP, Near Surface Mounted -- Fiber Reinforced polymer (NSM-FRP) is a promising technique used to strengthen concrete members. However, de-bonding issues have to be overcome to make this technique efficient and reliable. The NSM-FRP technique consists of making a groove along the surface of the concrete member to be retrofitted with depth less than the cover of the member. After cleaning the groove, epoxy paste is used to fill two-thirds of the groove's depth. The FRP element is then mounted in the groove. Finally, the groove is filled with epoxy and the excessive epoxy is leveled with surface of the concrete. This technique makes the FRP material completely covered by epoxy in the cover of the concrete. This method can be used for strengthening both the positive and negative moment regions of girders and slabs. Groove size, paste, concrete, and rods properties are the main variables that control the efficiency of the NSM-FRP rods. The main objective of this research project is to determine the behavior of reinforced concrete beams that are strengthened with NSM-CFRP reinforcement bars. In this research project, the bond characteristics of NSM-CFRP reinforcement bars are first determined from pullout tests. Then, NSM-CFRP rods are installed in reinforced concrete beams and the beams are tested. Loads, strains, and deflections are measured and theoretical and measured capacities are compared. Finally, the reliability and efficiency of using NSM-CFRP rods technique in retrofitting existing structures is observed.

Forty concrete beams were cast and tested in seven groups. Book excerpt: The research project conducted in this study concerns the investigation of the application of cement-based adhesives in CFRP strengthening of reinforced concrete members. The results demonstrate that mineral-based adhesives can provide the desired matrices for CFRP reinforcement. The literature review covers the background of CFRP application with conventional techniques. The bond characteristics of CFRP to concrete substrate, the flexural performance of retrofitted RC beams, and the failure modes at normal temperature are discussed. The guidelines for and numerical approaches to CFRP application are reviewed. Current studies of CFRP application at high temperature and related studies on the application of cement-based adhesive as bonding agent are investigated. The experimental work on the bond characteristics of CFRP material to concrete substrate using cement-based adhesive includes tests on single-lap shear. Results show that the cementitious adhesive can provide a reliable matrix for CFRP textiles to achieve certain bond stresses comparable to what can be achieved using conventional inorganic adhesives. The failure mode is debonding through the CFRP-mortar interface. The bond-slip relationship was extracted and later applied in finite element analysis.The experimental work on retrofitting of RC beams using cementitious adhesive showed that CFRP textile is the most compatible option with this new type of adhesive. The CFRP textile can improve the flexural ultimate strength of RC beams by 35%. The failure mode was intermediate debonding, similar to that achieved by using epoxy as reported in the research literature. A new type of anchorage was utilised for CFRP application using cementitious adhesive, which improved the ultimate capacity by 42%. The failure mode was concrete crushing on top, inferring that the full possible capacity of the beam was utilised.The experimental work pursued an investigation of flexural performance of retrofitted beams at high temperature. The results show that the retrofitted RC beam with cement-based adhesive had a considerable high temperature endurance compared to the specimens with epoxy. The failure temperature was 844°C. The proposed strengthening technique is therefore a reliable method for structures at high risk of fire exposure. The failure mode is intermediate debonding within a high moment region.Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted to simulate and gain a better understating of the performance of retrofitted members. There was a good correlation between the empirical results and the FE analysis. Furthermore, FEA was used to simulate the performance of a retrofitted RC beam under fire, and to predict the fire endurance and failure mode of the beam.

Book excerpt: fib Bulletin 40 deals mainly with the use of FRP bars as internal reinforcement for concrete structures. The background of the main physical and mechanical properties of FRP reinforcing bars is presented, with special emphasis on durability aspects. For each of the typical ultimate and serviceability limit states, the basic mechanical model is given, followed by different design models according to existing codes or design guidelines. Composite FRP materials are still relatively new in construction and most engineers are unfamiliar with their properties and characteristics. The second chapter of this bulletin therefore aims to provide practising engineers with the necessary background knowledge in this field, and also presents typical products currently available in the international market. The third chapter deals with the issue of durability and identifies the parameters that can lead to deterioration, which is necessary information when addressing design issues. A series of parameters is used to identify the allowable stress in the FRP after exposure for a specified period of time in a specific environment. The bulletin covers the issues of Ultimate Limit States (primarily dealing with flexural design), Serviceability Limit States (dealing with deflections and cracking), Shear and Punching Shear and Bond and Tension Stiffening. It provides not only the state-of-the-art but also in many cases ideas for the next generation of design guidelines. The final chapter deals with the fundamental issue of design philosophy. The use of these new materials as concrete reinforcement has forced researchers to re-think many of the fundamental principles used until now in RC design. The bulletin ends with a discussion of a possible new framework for developing partial safety factors to ensure specific safety levels that will be flexible enough to cope with new materials.
