Book Synopsis Jesus the Egyptian by : Richard Gabriel
Download or read book Jesus the Egyptian written by Richard Gabriel and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus The Egyptian is a revolutionary attempt to examine the origins of Christianity as historical artifacts and not theological ones. The author offers the theory that Christianity is historically rooted in the ancient Egyptian creed of Osiris and not only, as is often claimed, in Judaism, presenting a radical break with established Christian tradition. Professor Gabriel offers an intriguing analysis of Jesus' psychological motivation to explain Jesus' rejection of Judaism and his adoption of the Osiran-Isis creed, the most popular and practiced pagan theology of Christ's time.
Book Synopsis Gods of Our Fathers by : Richard A. Gabriel
Download or read book Gods of Our Fathers written by Richard A. Gabriel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabriel offers a startling new look at Judaism and Christianity by attempting to trace their historical theological roots, not to the revelations of God, but to the common theological ancestor, the religions of ancient Egypt. Using new material only recently made available by archaeology, Gabriel shows how the theological premises of Christianity were in existence three thousand years before Christ and how the heresy of Akhenaten became the source for Moses' Judaism. Gabriel begins with the challenge that the dawn of man's ethical conscience began in Egypt by 3400 BCE, long before the age of revelation in the West. Over the course of 3000 years, Egyptian theologians developed a complete theology of trinitarian monotheism, immortality of the soul, resurrection, and a post-mortem judgment within the Osiris myth. These concepts existed nowhere else in the ancient world and were passed directly to Christianity. In 1200 BCE, the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten abandoned Egyptian tradition and invented his own theology of a single god, no immortal soul, no resurrection, and no post-mortem judgment. This tradition was passed to the West through Moses whose Judaic theology is identical to Akhenaten's.
Book Synopsis Power and Politics in Palestine by : James S. McLaren
Download or read book Power and Politics in Palestine written by James S. McLaren and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical examination of the administration in Palestine between 100 BC and AD 70. Detailed case studies of such sources as Josephus, the New Testament and Philo establish who was actually involved in the decision-making process and political manoeuvering. The main issues addressed include: whether there was a system of Jewish government, and whether it included a permanent institution, the Sanhedrin; whether there is evidence that political and religious affairs were separated; whether the Jews were able to convict and execute people under Roman rule; what roles, if any, were played by individuals and social or religious groups in the administration; and what the motivation of those involved in the administration may have been.
Book Synopsis First Century Palestinian Judaism by : David Ray Bourquin
Download or read book First Century Palestinian Judaism written by David Ray Bourquin and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus was a Jew. That simple statement carries with it a millennia of cultural bias, persecution, and ignorance. David Ray Bourquin attempts to shed some light on what it meant to be a Jew during the Roman Period with this detailed, annotated bibliography of works in English. Following a brief introduction and guide on how to use the book, Bourquin divides his work into three major sections: A. Primary Sources; B. Books; and C. Periodical and Serial Articles. In each section, materials are arranged by subject, and in each sub-section in alphabetical order by main entry. Entries include complete bibliographical data, plus concise, descriptive, and analytical annotations. A glossary and four detailed indexes, all correlated to entry numbers, complete the volume. Every student of the period will want a copy of this carefully compiled bibliography.
Book Synopsis Calendrical Variations in Second Temple Judaism by : Stéphane Saulnier
Download or read book Calendrical Variations in Second Temple Judaism written by Stéphane Saulnier and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from the seminal work of the French scholar Annie Jaubert on the date of the Last Supper, the present work revisits known - and identifies new - calendrical issues in the literature of Second Temple Judaism. The research supports the conclusion that all known calendrical traditions functioned on the tenet that orthopraxis in ancient Judaism meant close interconnection between cultic and agricultural cycles. From this perspective the book removes the calendrical objection leveled at the Jaubertian theory. Further, the research brings new light on current debates about Qumran calendrical documents and proposes the identification of a previously unknown calendrical polemic in the Astronomical Book of Enoch concerning the synchronization of the 364DY tradition with the lunar cycle.

Download or read book Ritual written by Catherine Bell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From handshakes and toasts to chant and genuflection, ritual pervades our social interactions and religious practices. Still, few of us could identify all of our daily and festal ritual behaviors, much less explain them to an outsider. Similarly, because of the variety of activities that qualify as ritual and their many contradictory yet, in many ways, equally legitimate interpretations, ritual seems to elude any systematic historical and comparative scrutiny. In this book, Catherine Bell offers a practical introduction to ritual practice and its study; she surveys the most influential theories of religion and ritual, the major categories of ritual activity, and the key debates that have shaped our understanding of ritualism. Bell refuses to nail down ritual with any one definition or understanding. Instead, her purpose is to reveal how definitions emerge and evolve and to help us become more familiar with the interplay of tradition, exigency, and self-expression that goes into constructing this complex social medium.

Book Synopsis Ancient Greece and Rome by : Keith Hopwood
Download or read book Ancient Greece and Rome written by Keith Hopwood and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Thomas Fairfax, not Oliver Cromwell, was creator and commander of Parliament's New Model Army from 1645 to1650. Although Fairfax emerged as England's most successful commander of the 1640s, this book challenges the orthodoxy that he was purely a military figure, showing how he was not apolitical or disinterested in politics. The book combines narrative and thematic approaches to explore the wider issues of popular allegiance, puritan religion, concepts of honour, image, reputation, memory, gender, literature, and Fairfax's relationship with Cromwell. 'Black Tom' delivers a groundbreaking examination of the transformative experience of the English revolution from the viewpoint of one of its leading, yet most neglected, participants. It is the first modern academic study of Fairfax, making it essential reading for university students as well as historians of the seventeenth century. Its accessible style will appeal to a wider audience of those interested in the civil wars and interregnum more generally.
