Pipe bends curved to a radius of less than five diameters of the pipe are undesirable as expansion Contributed to Power by William F. Fischer. bends, because, being so stiff, they fail to take up the expansion in the line, and a good deal of strain is thrown on the fittings and joints. The radius should be at least five or six pipe diameters and if possible even greater than six diameters, say ten or twelve, in order to give sufficient elasticity. Anchoring The method of anchoring the steam line and the position of the anchor are important details. The line may be so anchored as to throw severe strains on the joints, working the gaskets and bolts loose and causing leakage; or a broken fitting or cracked flange may be the result, making it necessary to cut out one or more units while making repairs. Many leaky joints can be traced to this cause. No special rules can be given for designing and anchoring for expansion. The designer must depend on his own good judgment in placing the bends, anchors, etc., where they will do the most good. However, a knowledge of the expansion of pipes when heated is essential. Expansion In Fig. i there is shown a 10-inch extra heavy steampipe, and two clamps A A anchored rigidly to the walls. Say, for example, the pipe was placed in the position shown, at a temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit, anchored rigidly between one clamp and allowed to move freely through the other when expanding; supposing that while in this position, steam at 250 pounds pressure (above vacuum) was turned into it superheated 100 degrees, the pipe would heat and cause it to expand and slide through the clamp at the free end. The elongation of the pipe, due to expansion due to the difference of the above...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Works and Pipe Distribution The force of gravity acting with an ample reservoir differs from pump pressure for forcing water through pipes, in the important respect that it is always ready for instant use without notification by means of electric wires, tele phones, etc., and is not liable to break down or get out of order like pumps or other direct pressure appliances. It, moreover, exerts, at all times, a steady pressure on the pipe system, reducing the liability of breakage to a mini mum. A gravity system has a decided advantage over a direct pressure pumping system in that (if pipes are of proper size) the full volume of flow is instantly available without waiting to fire up extra steam boilers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book to describe the beautiful workings of hydronic heating systems and I tried to use words that made the subject spring to life in a visual way. It's been one of my best-selling books for years. I kept the drawings simple. Even if you've never worked with hydronics before, you'll be able to follow these drawings. The first part deals with boiler-room piping and explains how you can put the discoveries of the late, great Gil Carlson to work for you. If you pipe Gil's way, you'll save time, money and never again have to bleed radiators. Thousands of installers have reported great success by following the principles in the first part of this book. I wish I could take credit but the genius was Gil Carlson's. I just did my best to tell his story in plain English. The second half of the book takes the "Pumping Away" boiler-room piping design and applies it to a delicious menu of piping options. This is a book that you'll refer to again and again. It will save you time and money. And I guarantee that. - Dan Holohan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Piping: Its Economical Design and Correct Layout Mr. Johnston believes, as a deduction from his own professional observation and experience, that in the majority of industrial plants the steam-piping system has received insufficient attention, and that as a result wastes of both installation investment and operating cost are prevalent. In this volume, consolidated and revised from a series of articles published in the engineering magazine in 1915, he analyzes the factors governing the ow of steam in pipes, and presents a group of curves for use in solving the problems of practical installation and determining the most economical size of pipe to select for any given set of conditions. While the first chapter includes in its theoretical discussions all pressures from O to 250 pounds, two supplementary chapters take up respectively the special problems of low-pressure systems, and the enormous but too often neglected economies obtain able from the utilization of exhaust steam, and the employment of the plain reciprocating engine, with exhaust heat as a by-product, in place of much more costly equipment sometimes installed.
