Book excerpt: Publishers Weekly bestseller · A joyful and accessible homeschool guide to making learning a part of everyday life Parents who are deeply invested in their children's education can be hard on themselves and their kids. When exhausted parents are living the day-to-day grind, it can seem impossible to muster enough energy to make learning fun or interesting. How do parents nurture a love of learning amid childhood chaos, parental self-doubt, the flu, and state academic standards? In this book, Julie Bogart distills decades of experience--homeschooling her five now grown children, developing curricula, and training homeschooling families around the world--to show parents how to make education an exciting, even enchanting, experience for their kids, whether they're in elementary or high school. Enchantment is about ease, not striving. Bogart shows parents how to make room for surprise, mystery, risk, and adventure in their family's routine, so they can create an environment that naturally moves learning forward. If a child wants to pick up a new hobby or explore a subject area that the parent knows little about, it's easy to simply say "no" to end the discussion and the parental discomfort, while dousing their child's curious spark. Bogart gently invites parents to model brave learning for their kids so they, too, can approach life with curiosity, joy, and the courage to take learning risks.

Book excerpt: Humphrey Bogart: it’s hard to think of anyone who’s had the same lasting impact on the culture of movies. Though he died at the young age of fifty-seven more than half a century ago, his influence among actors and filmmakers, and his enduring appeal for film lovers around the world, remains as strong as ever. What is it about Bogart, with his unconventional looks and noticeable speech impediment, that has captured our collective imagination for so long? In this definitive biography, Stefan Kanfer answers that question, along the way illuminating the private man Bogart was and shining the spotlight on some of the greatest performances ever captured on celluloid. Bogart fell into show business almost by accident and worked for nearly twenty years before becoming the star we know today. Born into a life of wealth and privilege in turn-of-the-century New York, Bogart was a troublemaker throughout his youth, getting kicked out of prep school and running away to join the navy at the age of nineteen. After a short, undistinguished stint at sea, Bogart spent his early twenties drifting aimlessly from one ill-fitting career to another, until, through a childhood friend, he got his first theater job. Working first as a stagehand and then, reluctantly, as a bit-part player, Bogart cut his teeth in one forgettable role after another. But it was here he began to develop a work ethic; deciding that there were “two kinds of men: professionals and bums,” Bogart, for the first time in his life, wanted to be the former. After the Crash of ’29, Bogart headed west to try his luck in Hollywood. That luck was scarce, and he slogged through more than thirty B-movie roles before his drinking buddy John Huston wrote him a part that would change everything; with High Sierra, Bogart finally broke through at the age of forty—being a pro had paid off. What followed was a string of movies we have come to know as the most beloved classics of American cinema: The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The Big Sleep, The African Queen . . . the list goes on and on. Kanfer appraises each of the films with an unfailing critical eye, weaving in lively accounts of behind-the-scenes fun and friendships, including, of course, the great love story of Bogart and Bacall. What emerges in these pages is the portrait of a great Hollywood life, and the final word on why there can only ever be one Bogie.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an extensive collection of genealogies of the first settlers of Schenectady, tracing families in the direct male line for at least three generations. The compiler based his research, in large part, on the baptism and marriage registers of the First Reformed Church of Schenectady but otherwise drew on records of the Secretary of State of New York, the Clerks of the City and County of Albany, and the Court of Appeals. The result is a genealogical compendium of unimpeachable authority. The articles range from brief paragraph-length sketches to full-blown family histories and are characterized by a catalogued progression of names and dates of birth, marriage, and death with incidental references to land holdings, occupation, place of residence, country of origin, and date of immigration. The articles are arranged in alphabetical order by family name, allowing easy access, and all names cited therein are included in the index, which yields more than 6,000 entries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Notes on the History of the Bogart Family in Canada: With Genealogical Record of My Parents, Lewis Lazier Bogart and Elizabeth Cronk Bogart MY purpose in publishing these notes on the genealogy of my parents is not only to impart the information that I have been able to obtain, together with some of my personal knowledge, to my friends and relatives, but also to preserve an historical record of some of the prominent settlers who early came to this part of Canada. In fact I have endeavored to trace the four branches of my family back to the time when they first came to this continent, which has been no easy task. The more one delves into the past and finds an honorable record, the greater fascination the work has, and the greater satisfaction the information imparts. I shall feel amply repaid for my work if I have imparted information to my relatives that will lead them to a greater knowledge and appreciation of their ancestors.
